OpenCL Actors - Adding Data Parallelism to Actor-based Programming with CAF
The actor model of computation has been designed for a seamless support of
concurrency and distribution. However, it remains unspecific about data
parallel program flows, while available processing power of modern many core
hardware such as graphics processing units (GPUs) or coprocessors increases the
relevance of data parallelism for general-purpose computation.
In this work, we introduce OpenCL-enabled actors to the C++ Actor Framework
(CAF). This offers a high level interface for accessing any OpenCL device
without leaving the actor paradigm. The new type of actor is integrated into
the runtime environment of CAF and gives rise to transparent message passing in
distributed systems on heterogeneous hardware. Following the actor logic in
CAF, OpenCL kernels can be composed while encapsulated in C++ actors, hence
operate in a multi-stage fashion on data resident at the GPU. Developers are
thus enabled to build complex data parallel programs from primitives without
leaving the actor paradigm, nor sacrificing performance. Our evaluations on
commodity GPUs, an Nvidia TESLA, and an Intel PHI reveal the expected linear
scaling behavior when offloading larger workloads. For sub-second duties, the
efficiency of offloading was found to largely differ between devices. Moreover,
our findings indicate a negligible overhead over programming with the native

This study applies management theory to advance the literature on MiLB demand modeling by proposing and testing a new set of demand determinants based on interorganizational alliance principles. Team executives at the AA level should be alert to the high cost of switching team alliances and of changing to a parent club in closer geographical proximity. Neural network and multiple linear regression to predict school children dimensions for ergonomic school furniture design
The current study investigates the possibility of obtaining the anthropometric dimensions, critical to school furniture design, without measuring all of them. The study first selects some anthropometric dimensions that are easy to measure. Two methods are then used to check if these easy-to-measure dimensions can predict the dimensions critical to the furniture design. These methods are multiple linear regression and neural networks. Each dimension that is deemed necessary to ergonomically design school furniture is expressed as a function of some other measured anthropometric dimensions. Results show that out of the five dimensions needed for chair design, four can be related to other dimensions that can be measured while children are standing. Therefore, the method suggested here would definitely save time and effort and avoid the difficulty of dealing with students while measuring these dimensions. In
Altered pituitary hormone secretion in male rats exposed to Bisphenol A
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a xenobiotic estrogenic compound. This compound has been suspected to have estrogenic effects on reproductive system of males and females. In this present study we investigated possible low-dose effects of BPAon Luteinizing Hormone in rats. Male Wistar rats (12-13 weeks old) were administrated a daily intra peritoneal 10 μg/kgbw/day, 50 μg/kgbw/day, 100 μg/kgbw/ day dose of BPA for 6, 6, and 12 days, and one day after last injection, serum level of Luteinizing Hormone was examined by ELISA method. All data were expressed as means ± SE. Two-way ANOVA was performed. Analysis of data showed that in all dose groups, plasma level of Luteinizing Hormone significantly decreased compared to control group. The present study showed that BPA at low doses affects Luteinizing Hormone, one of main hormones in spermatogenesis in the adult Wistar rats, and subsequently alters the steroidgenesis in testicular Leydig cells
The importance of socio-economic context for social marketing models for improving reproductive health: Evidence from 555 years of program experience
BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, social marketing programs have become an important element of the national family planning and HIV prevention strategy in several developing countries. As yet, there has not been any comprehensive empirical assessment to determine which of several social marketing models is most effective for a given socio-economic context. Such an assessment is urgently needed to inform the design of future social marketing programs, and to avoid that programs are designed using an ineffective model. METHODS: This study addresses this issue using a database of annual statistics about reproductive health oriented social marketing programs in over 70 countries. In total, the database covers 555 years of program experience with social marketing programs that distribute and promote the use of oral contraceptives and condoms. Specifically, our analysis assesses to what extent the model used by different reproductive health social marketing programs has varied across different socio-economic contexts. We then use random effects regression to test in which socio-economic context each of the models is most successful at increasing use of socially marketed oral contraceptives and condoms. RESULTS: The results show that there has been a tendency to design reproductive health social marketing program with a management structure that matches the local context. However, the evidence also shows that this has not always been the case. While socio-economic context clearly influences the effectiveness of some of the social marketing models, program maturity and the size of the target population appear equally important. CONCLUSIONS: To maximize the effectiveness of future social marketing programs, it is essential that more effort is devoted to ensuring that such programs are designed using the model or approach that is most suitable for the local context
Sports Nutrition Supplement Use: Comparison between a USA and a Palestinian community
This study was undertaken to examine nutritional supplement consumption and to compare results between study participants from fitness centers in Eastern Massachusetts, USA, and in the West Bank, Palestine. Participants (n=355) completed surveys detailing their exercise habits, nutritional supplement use, reasons for use, and any experienced side effects. Whey protein, vitamins and minerals, branched chain amino acids, and creatine were most commonly consumed. Independent samples t-tests revealed significantly higher supplement use in male participants and in those who believed supplement use improved exercise performance.Independent samples t-tests didn’t reveal significant differences in total supplement use by location (West Bank or USA), level of education, or whether they’d taken a nutrition course. There were significant differences between location and frequency of use of whey protein, branched-chain amino acids, multivitamin/minerals and weight loss products. West Bank participants used more whey protein and BCAA than USA participants. Participants from the West Bank were less likely to use multivitamin/mineral supplements and weight loss products than USA participants. Most commonly reported side effects were headaches, palpitations, and diarrhea. Nutritionists, trainers, coaches, and health educators may use this data to educate their clients about risks associated with consumption of supplements that are largely unregulated
