    RAM-Efficient External Memory Sorting

    In recent years a large number of problems have been considered in external memory models of computation, where the complexity measure is the number of blocks of data that are moved between slow external memory and fast internal memory (also called I/Os). In practice, however, internal memory time often dominates the total running time once I/O-efficiency has been obtained.     Structure of confined laminar spray diffusion flames: Numerical investigation

    The structure of confined laminar spray diffusion flames is investigated numerically by solving the gas-phase conservation equations for mass species, continuity, momentum, and energy and the liquid-phase equations for droplet position, velocity, size, and temperature. A one-step global reaction scheme along with six equilibrium reactions are employed to model the flame chemistry. Monodisperse as well as polydisperse sprays are considered. The numerical results demonstrate that liquid spray flames substantially differ from gaseous flames in their structure, i.e., temperature, concentration, and velocity fields, shape, and dimensions under the same conditions. Spray flames are predicted to be taller and narrower than their counterpart gaseous ones and their shapes are almost cylindrical. This is in agreement with experimental observations. The numerical computations also show that the use of the equilibrium reactions with the one-step reaction scheme decreases the flame temperature compared to the one-step reaction scheme without the equilibrium reactions and more importantly increases the surface area of the flame zone due to a phenomenon termed 'equilibrium broadening.' The spray flames also possess a finite thickness with minimal overlap of the fuel and oxygen species. A case for which a fuel-mixture consisting of 20 to 80 percent gas-liquid by mass is introduced into the combustor is also investigated and compared with predictions using only gaseous or liquid fuel

    Computer aided FEA simulation of EN45A parabolic leaf spring

    This paper describes computer aided finite element analysis of parabolic leaf spring. The present work is an improvement in design of EN45A parabolic leaf spring used by a light commercial automotive vehicle. Development of a leaf spring is a long process which requires lots of test to validate the design and manufacturing variables. A three-layer parabolic leaf spring of EN45A has been taken for this work. The thickness of leaves varies from center to the outer side following a parabolic pattern. These leaf springs are designed to become lighter, but also provide a much improved ride to the vehicle through a reduction on interleaf friction. The CAD modeling of parabolic leaf spring has been done in CATIA V5 and for analysis the model is imported in ANSYS-11 workbench. The finite element analysis (FEA) of the leaf spring has been carried out by initially discretizing the model into finite number of elements and nodes and then applying the necessary boundary conditions. Maximum displacement, directional displacement, equivalent stress and weight of the assembly are the output targets of this analysis for comparison & validation of the work

    Electron Impact Excitation Cross Sections for Hydrogen-Like Ions

    We present cross sections for electron-impact-induced transitions n --> n' in hydrogen-like ions C 5+, Ne 9+, Al 12+, and Ar 17+. The cross sections are computed by Coulomb-Born with exchange and normalization (CBE) method for all transitions with n < n' < 7 and by convergent close-coupling (CCC) method for transitions with n 2s and 1s --> 2p are presented as well. The CCC and CBE cross sections agree to better than 10% with each other and with earlier close-coupling results (available for transition 1 --> 2 only). Analytical expression for n --> n' cross sections and semiempirical formulae are discussed.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages, 13 PostScript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Nuclear modification at sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3 GeV, measured at NA49

    Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c were measured around midrapidity in Pb+Pb reactions at sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3 GeV, for pi^{+/-}, p, pbar and K^{+/-}, by the NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors R_{AA}, R_{AA/pA} and R_{CP} were extracted and are compared to RHIC results at sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. The modification factor R_{AA} shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum in the covered region. The modification factor R_{CP} shows saturation well below unity in the pi^{+/-} channel. The extracted R_{CP} values follow the 200 GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range for all particle species. For pi^{+/-} above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum, the measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC. The nuclear modification factor R_{AA/pA} for pi^{+/-} stays well below unity.Comment: Proceedings of Quark Matter 2008 conferenc

    CYPRINUS CARPIO: BIOINDICATOR OF HEAVY METAL POLLUTION IN YAMUNA RIVER, DELHI REGION

    Heavy metals being persistent pose conglomerated hazards towards safety and human health. Impacts of heavy metal pollution can be exhibited by both natural and anthropogenic activities. Therefore, developing nations are under immense pressure of controlling the environmental impacts of increasing industrialization and pollution, subject to their limited resources and infrastructure. Bioindicators are important biological entities to determine the positive/ negative changes in the desired ecosystem. They are the fast respondents towards the slightest changes and provide early reliable results. Identifying &amp; establishing a suitable bioindicator can provide a faster and inexpensive way to address the undesirable effects. Cyprinus carpio, a freshwater fish, is used to determine the Lead (Pb) at different locations of Yamuna River and the bioavailability in different tissues. In the present study, we are trying to establish fish as an indicator of lead pollution in the river. It is a well-known fact that the water bodies are most affected by human activities. Polluted water bodies can lead to adverse effects on human health. Lead is also known to cause phytotoxicities in aquatic and terrestrial plants. This study is therefore an attempt to identify the harmful impacts of lead in River ecology. Ten fish specimens of C. carpio were collected from four different sites of Yamuna River and analyzed for Lead accumulation in fish tissues. High concentration and accumulation were observed in specimens collected from various locations and found to be higher than the permissible limits for human consumption

    Investigation of high pt_{t} events in Nucleus-Nucleus collisions using the Hijing event generator

    In recent years lot of interest has been observed in the nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC energies in phenomena related to high ptp_{t} physics \cite{ref1}. The suppression of high ptp_{t} particles and disappearance of back-to-back jets compared to the scaling with number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions indicates that a nearly perfect liquid is produced in these collisions. Results on self shadowing of high ptp_{t} events are presented using hadron multiplicity associated to high ptp_{t} and unbiased events in nucleus-nucleus collisions \cite{ref2} obtained from the hijing event generator.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Proceedings of the poster presented at Quark Matter 200

    Nuclear Broadening Effects on Hard Prompt Photons at Relativistic Energies

    We calculate prompt photon production in high-energy nuclear collisions. We focus on the broadening of the intrinsic transverse momenta of the partons in the initial state from nuclear effects, and their influence on the prompt photon p_t distribution. Comparing to WA98 data from Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energy we find evidence for the presence of nuclear broadening at high p_t in this hard process. Below p_t=2.7 GeV the photon distribution is due to small momentum transfer processes. At RHIC energy, the effect of intrinsic transverse momentum on the spectrum of prompt photons is less prominent. The region p_t=3-4 GeV would be the most promising for studying the nuclear broadening effects at that energy. Below p_t=2-3 GeV the contribution from large momentum transfers flattens out, and we expect that region to be dominated by soft contributions.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, minor changes, a few references adde
