High Performance Power Spectrum Analysis Using a FPGA Based Reconfigurable Computing Platform
Power-spectrum analysis is an important tool providing critical information
about a signal. The range of applications includes communication-systems to
DNA-sequencing. If there is interference present on a transmitted signal, it
could be due to a natural cause or superimposed forcefully. In the latter case,
its early detection and analysis becomes important. In such situations having a
small observation window, a quick look at power-spectrum can reveal a great
deal of information, including frequency and source of interference. In this
paper, we present our design of a FPGA based reconfigurable platform for high
performance power-spectrum analysis. This allows for the real-time
data-acquisition and processing of samples of the incoming signal in a small
time frame. The processing consists of computation of power, its average and
peak, over a set of input values. This platform sustains simultaneous data
streams on each of the four input channels.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Published in the Proceedings of the IEEE

Implant Prophylaxis: The Next Best Practice Toward Asepsis in Spine Surgery.
Study designA literature review.ObjectivesAn evaluation of the contaminants prevalent on implants used for surgery and the aseptic methods being employed against them.MethodsPubMed was searched for articles published between 2000 and 2017 for studies evaluating the contaminants present on spine implants, and associated pre- and intraoperative implant processing and handling methodology suggested to avoid them. Systematic reviews, observational studies, bench-top studies, and expert opinions were included.ResultsEleven studies were identified whose major focus was the asepsis of implants to reduce the incidence of surgical site infection incidences during surgery. These studies measured the colony forming units of bacteria on sterilized implants and/or gloves from the surgeon, scrub nurse, and assistants, as well as reductions of surgical site infection rates in spine surgery due to changes in implant handling techniques. Additionally, the search included assessments of endotoxins and carbohydrates present on reprocessed implants. The suggested changes to surgical practice based on these studies included handling implants with only fresh gloves, keeping implants covered until the immediate time of use, reducing operating room traffic, avoiding reprocessing of implants (ie, providing terminally sterilized implants), and avoiding touching the implants altogether.ConclusionsBoth reprocessing (preoperative) and handling (intraoperative) of implants seem to lead to contamination of sterilized implants. Using a terminally sterilized device may mitigate reprocessing (preoperative implant prophylaxis), whereas the use of fresh gloves for handling each implant and/or a permanent shielding technique (intraoperative implant prophylaxis) could potentially avoid recontamination at the theatre
Strengthening the Growth of Indian Defence by Harnessing Nanotechnology - A Prospective
Nano-networking is truly interdisciplinary and emerging field including nanotechnology, biotechnology, and ICT. It is a developing research area which consists of identifying, modeling, analyzing and organizing communication protocols between devices in Nanoscale environments. The main goal is to explore beyond the existing capabilities of Nanodevices by cooperating and sharing information between them. Since conventional communication models are not appropriate to represent Nanonetworks, it is necessary to introduce new communication paradigm in the form of suitable protocols and network architectures. Nanotechnology could greatly improve some of the existing technologies and thus create new operational opportunities or, at least, help the military forces to strengthen themselves in the battlefield. The paper presents a brief overview of nanotechnology applications in defence sector and the challenges towards realization of protocols for Nanocommunication. The research is going forward and one can expect more protection rather than damage in the domain of ‘Nano-age’.Defence Science Journal, 2013, 63(1), pp.46-52, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.63.376
Further observations on the relationship of EMG and muscle force
Human skeletal muscle may be regarded as an electro-mechanical transducer. Its physiological input is a neural signal originating at the alpha motoneurons in the spinal cord and its output is force and muscle contraction, these both being dependent on the external load. Some experimental data taken during voluntary efforts around the ankle joint and by direct electrical stimulation of the nerve are described. Some of these experiments are simulated by an analog model, the input of which is recorded physiological soleus muscle EMG. The output is simulated foot torque. Limitations of a linear model and effect of some nonlinearities are discussed

Theoretical studies on tone noise from a ducted fan rotor
The method of computing radiated noise from a ducted rotor due to inflow distortion and turbulence are examined. Analytical investigations include an appropriate description of sources, the cut-off conditions imposed on the modal propagation of the pressure waves in the annular duct, and reflections at the upstream end of the duct. Far field sound pressure levels at blade passing frequency due to acoustic radiation from a small scale low speed fan are computed. Theoretical predictions are in reasonable agreement with experimental measurements
Generating Preview Tables for Entity Graphs
Users are tapping into massive, heterogeneous entity graphs for many
applications. It is challenging to select entity graphs for a particular need,
given abundant datasets from many sources and the oftentimes scarce information
for them. We propose methods to produce preview tables for compact presentation
of important entity types and relationships in entity graphs. The preview
tables assist users in attaining a quick and rough preview of the data. They
can be shown in a limited display space for a user to browse and explore,
before she decides to spend time and resources to fetch and investigate the
complete dataset. We formulate several optimization problems that look for
previews with the highest scores according to intuitive goodness measures,
under various constraints on preview size and distance between preview tables.
The optimization problem under distance constraint is NP-hard. We design a
dynamic-programming algorithm and an Apriori-style algorithm for finding
optimal previews. Results from experiments, comparison with related work and
user studies demonstrated the scoring measures' accuracy and the discovery
algorithms' efficiency.Comment: This is the camera-ready version of a SIGMOD16 paper. There might be
tiny differences in layout, spacing and linebreaking, compared with the
version in the SIGMOD16 proceedings, since we must submit TeX files and use
