Changing the Financial Landscape of Africa: An Unusual Story of Evidence?informed Innovation, Intentional Policy Influence and Private Sector Engagement

This article uses the Steven Framework to show the influence of research on the policies and practices of mobile money transfer and mobile phone?enabled payments in Africa. While it is a much?discussed subject, few people know the wider narrative by which products such as M?Pesa were intentionally championed from outside the mobile phone industry. This championing was part of a much broader intentional strategy to change the landscape of financial service provision in Africa and to decrease the cost of international remittances. The origins of this strategy are to be found in research on the emerging behaviours associated with mobile phone use in Africa. There is an increasing call for evidence?based policymaking. Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Africa : how civil registration and vital statistics systems supported an emergency response

CRVS systems are essential services, providing critical mortality data and legal identity that underpin safety nets and public services. Developing measures to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the registration of vital events is critical. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), with the support of the Centre for Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems, is using its convening role to provide technical assistance to African countries. Mentorship and sustainable research output : a case study of the University of Johannesburg

Abstract: Higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa are facing challenges arising as a result of the shift from traditional teaching activities to a combination of research and teaching. Increasing emphasis on research, an integral part of this transformation of higher education, has required HEIs to develop and implement capacity development strategies to enable those new to research to engage in research output; and mentorship is a strategy that is enjoying increasing popularity. This article explores the challenges faced in the implementation of a formal research mentorship programme (REMP), using the University of Johannesburg as a case study. A quantitative approach was adopted to obtain the perceptions of academic staff of REMP as a strategy for building research capacity. The findings reveal that whilst the REMP is strongly favoured by academics as a means of guiding novice researchers, key factors need to be addressed to ensure its success. This article examines the challenges for both mentors and mentees and suggests actions to help mentorship programmes make sustainable contributions to the development of research capacity
