Dephasing of Electrons on Helium by Collisions with Gas Atoms

The damping of quantum effects in the transport properties of electrons deposited on a surface of liquid helium is studied. It is found that due to vertical motion of the helium vapour atoms the interference of paths of duration tt is damped by a factor exp(t/τv)3\exp - (t/\tau_v)^3. An expression is derived for the weak-localization lineshape in the case that damping occurs by a combination of processes with this type of cubic exponential damping and processes with a simple exponential damping factor.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, Revte

Is the Luttinger liquid a new state of matter?

We are demonstrating that the Luttinger model with short range interaction can be treated as a type of Fermi liquid. In line with the main dogma of Landau's theory one can define a fermion excitation renormalized by interaction and show that in terms of these fermions any excited state of the system is described by free particles. The fermions are a mixture of renormalized right and left electrons. The electric charge and chirality of the Landau quasi-particle is discussed.Comment: paper 10 pages. Is weak temperature dependence of electron dephasing possible?

The first-principle theory of electron dephasing by disorder-induced two state fluctuators is developed. There exist two mechanisms of dephasing. First, dephasing occurs due to direct transitions between the defect levels caused by inelastic electron-defect scattering. The second mechanism is due to violation of the time reversal symmetry caused by time-dependent fluctuations of the scattering potential. These fluctuations originate from an interaction between the dynamic defects and conduction electrons forming a thermal bath. The first contribution to the dephasing rate saturates as temperature decreases. The second contribution does not saturate, although its temperature dependence is rather weak, T1/3\propto T^{1/3}. The quantitative estimates based on the experimental data show that these mechanisms considered can explain the weak temperature dependence of the dephasing rate in some temperature interval. However, below some temperature dependent on the model of dynamic defects the dephasing rate tends rapidly to zero. The relation to earlier studies of the dephasing caused by the dynamical defects is discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR

About the possibility of five-dimensional effective theories for low-energy QCD

The AdS/QCD models suggest an interesting idea that the effective theory of low-energy QCD may be formulated as a 5-dimensional field theory in the weak coupling regime in which the fifth coordinate plays a role of inverse energy scale. Taking the point of view that this is just an efficient parametrization of the non-perturbative dynamics of strong interactions, we discuss on a qualitative level an alternative possibility for a simpler 5-dimensional parametrization of main phenomena in the low-energy QCD. We propose to interpret the effect of chiral symmetry breaking as an effective appearance of compactified extra dimension with the radius of the order of inverse scale of chiral symmetry breaking. Following some heuristic arguments two dual scenarios for the emergence of the excited light mesons are introduced: In the first scenario, the meson resonances are interpreted as the effects of Kaluza-Klein excitations of quarks inside mesons, in the second one, as the formation of gluon strings wound around the compactified dimension an appropriate number of times. Matching of these scenarios permits to express the slope of radial Regge trajectories through the order parameters of the chiral symmetry breaking, with the compactification radius being excluded. This example shows qualitatively that the extra dimension may play an auxiliary role providing a short way for deriving new relations.Comment: 11 pages, accepted by Eur. Phys. J.

Weak localization effect on thermomagnetic phenomena

The quantum transport equation (QTE) is extended to study weak localization (WL) effects on galvanomagnetic and thermomagnetic phenomena. QTE has many advantages over the linear response method (LRM): (i) particle-hole asymmetry which is necessary for the Hall effect is taken into account by the nonequilibrium distribution function, while LRM requires expansion near the Fermi surface, (ii) when calculating response to the temperature gradient, the problem of WL correction to the heat current operator is avoided, (iii) magnetic field is directly introduced to QTE, while the LRM deals with the vector potential and and special attention should be paid to maintain gauge invariance, e.g. when calculating the Nernst effect the heat current operator should be modified to include the external magnetic field. We reproduce in a very compact form known results for the conductivity, the Hall and the thermoelectric effects and then we study our main problem, WL correction to the Nernst coefficient (transverse thermopower).Comment: 20 pages 2 figure

Decoherence in Disordered Conductors at Low Temperatures, the effect of Soft Local Excitations

The conduction electrons' dephasing rate, τϕ1\tau_{\phi}^{-1}, is expected to vanish with the temperature. A very intriguing apparent saturation of this dephasing rate in several systems was recently reported at very low temperatures. The suggestion that this represents dephasing by zero-point fluctuations has generated both theoretical and experimental controversies. We start by proving that the dephasing rate must vanish at the T0T\to 0 limit, unless a large ground state degeneracy exists. This thermodynamic proof includes most systems of relevance and it is valid for any determination of τϕ\tau_{\phi} from {\em linear} transport measurements. In fact, our experiments demonstrate unequivocally that indeed when strictly linear transport is used, the apparent low-temperature saturation of τϕ\tau_{\phi} is eliminated. However, the conditions to be in the linear transport regime are more strict than hitherto expected. Another novel result of the experiments is that introducing heavy nonmagnetic impurities (gold) in our samples produces, even in linear transport, a shoulder in the dephasing rate at very low temperatures. We then show theoretically that low-lying local defects may produce a relatively large dephasing rate at low temperatures. However, as expected, this rate in fact vanishes when T0T \to 0, in agreement with our experimental observations.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the Euresco Conference on Fundamental Problems of Mesoscopic Physics, Granada, September 2003, Kluwe

Inelastic Scattering Time for Conductance Fluctuations

We revisit the problem of inelastic times governing the temperature behavior of the weak localization correction and mesoscopic fluctuations in one- and two-dimensional systems. It is shown that, for dephasing by the electron electron interaction, not only are those times identical but the scaling functions are also the same.Comment: 10 pages Revtex; 5 eps files include
