    e‐Maintenance Framework for Strategic Asset Management in Tertiary Institutions

    Tertiary institutions require buildings such as its senate building, classrooms, laboratories, administrative rooms, hostels and other offices in order to function. Providing and maintaining these buildings require a lot of planning and capital investment. The study examined the prospects of using e‐ Maintenance platform for strategic asset management in tertiary institutions. This study noted that adequate maintenance of the building infrastructural base of tertiary institutions is crucial for sustainability in the face of dwindling funds in the education sector. In order to automate the e‐ Maintenance process for strategic maintenance of the institution’s building maintenance, a use case diagram, system block diagram, sequence diagram and activity diagram were designed and presented in this study. Three (3) main users are essential in the sequence of operation of the e‐Maintenance platform. These users represent the building occupants, the facility manager and the management personnel; for effective oversite and performance monitoring. The methodology of this research includes using the combination of HTML, CSS and the C‐Sharp programming language for the interface design and server side scripting while MySQL was the database platform used for storing and retrieving the data used for the application.     Improving Employability Skills Through a Web-Based Work Integrated Learning Database for Construction Students

    Employability and Unemployment continues to be dire issues that Nigerian youth are faced with daily in a saturated employment market. Whereas, the use of workintegrated learning can help bridge the gap by increasing employability skills among students. The study examined the benefits of having a work-integrated learning (WIL) program for students in the construction field. Therefore, the study developed a framework for improving employability skills through a web-based work integrated learning database for construction students. Using a system block diagram, use case diagram and activity diagram, the study illustrated the functional requirement needed for the development of the WIL platform. The WIL platform is a web-based system pooling submission of available WIL positions from employers in construction businesses and former WIL students in order for prospective WIL students to access possible openings where they can learn in a workplace environment. The methodology of this research includes using the combination of HTML, CSS and the C-Sharp programming language for the interface design and server side scripting while MySQL was the database platform used for storing and retrieving the data used for the application.     Sweeter with Age: The Enigmatic Miss Jane McCotter in the Colonial Services of the Egba Native Administration in Abeokuta, Nigeria, 1929-1955

    In spite of the significant roles European women played in the administration of colonial Nigeria, only a handful of them have been given adequate attention. Against this backdrop, the contributions of Miss Jane McCotter to the development of the Egba Healthcare delivery system, were examined. Relying and critically evaluating extant literature, newspapers, interviews and archival records, the authors demonstrate that she made her marks, not only on the quality work she put into the field of nursing and midwifery, but also, on how she commanded attention as the proprietress of a midwifery school and a proficient Structural Engineer, who supervised the construction of public and maternal health buildings in the colonial Egba Division. Furthermore, the study has established that despite her advanced age, she put her all to the services of the Egba people, education of the girl child, women’s welfare, as well as the general development of Egba land in particular, and Nigeria, as a whole. This study, therefore, fulfills knowledge production in biographical studies, gender, colonial empires, and also, demonstrates the resilience, perseverance and dedication of this human enigma, despite the challenges she faced

    PATENT MEDICINE VENDORS’ PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE FOR THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF COVID-19 INFECTION IN A NORTH-CENTRAL STATE IN NIGERIA

    Objective: This report aimed to determine the immediate effect of the IPC training on the knowledge and role of patent medicine vendors (PMV) in the COVID-19 outbreak response in Nigeria. Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental study before and after the IPC training among 1076 PMV in Ilorin, Kwara state, Nigeria. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 23. Eight questions were asked, for which each was assigned a score of “1”. Participants who had scored<50% were categorized as “Fail”, while those with scores ≥50% were categorized as “Pass” in both the pre and post-tests. The Chi-square test was used to test for the association between sociodemographic characteristics and performance of respondents in the pre-and post-IPC knowledge results, and paired t-test to test for significant differences between the pre and post-tests mean scores. The level of significance was set at p<0.05 for all statistical tests. Results: The mean age of the 1076 respondents was 37.06±10.96, 463(43%) passed the pre-test, while 617 (57.3%) passed the post-test. The mean pre-test IPC training score was 3.1310±1.5631, while the mean post-test IPC training score was 3.7351±1.6028 (t=-11.337, p=<0.001). In all, 617(57.3%) scored higher in posttest. Overall, 560 (92.41%) identified community sensitization and health education on COVID-19 preventive measures as roles of PMV. Conclusion: Regular trainings on COVID-19 preventive practices among PMV should be conducted. PMV should be empowered to sensitize and educate their clients on the prevention of COVID-19

    Predictive mathematical modeling and computer simulation of direct ethanol fuel cell

    Abstract: The challenges of finding a better substitute of energy as well as the short comings identify with direct ethanol fuel cell, this includes; high anode over potential and crossover necessitate the need to investigate the influence operating parameters on the performance of fuel through computer simulation. This study focus on the development of a predictive mathematical modeling for direct ethanol fuel cell for the purpose of investigating the influence pressure, temperature cathode and reactants concentration on the performance, efficiency and heat generated by the cell. Results obtained indicate that increase in operating temperature resulted led to decrement in output voltage and cell efficiency, while same condition of increasing the temperature positively favour the heat generated from the cell. Simulated results also show that cell performance is improved with increase in concentration of the fuel (ethanol) and oxidant (oxygen). It can be inferred from this study that the cell performance of DEFC can be theoretically predicted with the developed model

    Novel pGreen/pSoup dual-binary vector system in multiple T-DNA co-cultivation as a method of producing marker-free (clean gene) transgenic rice (Oriza sativa L) plant

    The possibility of producing marker-free transgenic rice plants using a novel dual binary pGreen/pSoup vectors, in multiple T-DNA co-cultivation, was investigated and demonstrated to be feasible. The T-DNA in pSoup (pRT47) vector was engineered to contain the selection marker hygromycin phosphotransferase (aphIV) gene (plus intron in 5′ UTR), and the green fluorescent protein (gfp) as a reporter gene both driven by the CaMV35S promoter and the nopaline synthase terminator. T-DNA in the pGreen (pRT18) vector harboured the phosphinothricin acetyl transferase (bar), as selection marker gene, and the b- glucuronidase (gusA) plus intron as a reporter gene, both driven by the maize 5′ ubiquitin region and the nopaline synthase terminator. Both the pGreen and pSoup plasmids were transformed into E. coli strain DH5α using the PEG-transformation technique and into Agrobacterium strains AGL1using a freeze-thaw method. AGL1 was then used to transform embryogenic nodular units (ENU), derived from mature seeds of the model rice genotype Nipponbare. Selection on herbicide (PPT) or antibiotic (hygromycin) of co-cultured ENUs led to the production of numerous independently transformed callus clones containing both T-DNAs from the selected and unselected vector. While co- ransformation frequencies were 71% and 80% for the hygromycin only and herbicide (PPT) only selection, respectively, data showed that co-expression frequency is most useful for the production of marker free transgenic rice. About half (50%) of the independent transgenic plant lines contained at least one unlinked T-DNA integration.     Traumatic Tympanic Membrane perforation: An aetiological profile

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Traumatic perforation of the tympanic membrane may be due to direct or indirect source. The aim of the study is to profile the various aetiologies of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation in Ilorin, north central Nigeria.</p> <p>A retrospective review of 64 patients seen at the University of Ilorin Teaching hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria over a ten year period (January 1998 to Dec 2007) with history of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation from various causes, these also included multiply injured patients with bleeding from middle ear as part of their presentations. The data retrieved included the biodata, the clinical presentations, source of injury, the clinical findings and the treatment outcome. The data were entered into an SPSS version 11 computer soft ware and analyzed descriptively.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Sixty four (64) ears were analysed, Age range 6 months to 50 yrs, mean age of 29.2 yrs 7.9% of them were ≤5 years, 29.7% between 21-34 years, and 37.7% were 35 years and above. The male to female ratio was 2.5:1.0. Commonest aetiology was from slaps, then road traffic injury (RTI) in 35.9% and 23.5%, Majority of the slap injury were from fights (30.5%), security agents, senior students and cultists at schools (17.4% each). Sudden hearing loss was a typical presentation (95.3%), majority of the patient defaulted from follow up once the symptoms of bleeding and pain subsided. Only 7.8% had neomembrane formation on follow up</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Traumatic perforation of the tympanic membrane is an uncommon injury that is under-reported, there is the need to educate on alternative punitive measure among students and security agents, unskilled removal of foreign body, early identification, evaluation and referral of patients reduces the attendant morbidity.</p
