Details on the French subsonic wind-tunnel F2 that becomes operational on July 1983 are presented. Some of the requirements were: (1) installation of models on any wall of the facility, (2) good observation points due to transparent walls, (3) smooth flow, (4) a laser velocimeter, and (5) easy access and handling. The characteristics include a nonpressurized return circuit, dimensions of 5 x 1.4 x 1.8 m, maximum velocity of 100 m/s and a variable speed fan of 683 kW

Multimodal assessment of painful peripheral neuropathy induced by chronic oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy in mice

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A major clinical issue affecting 10-40% of cancer patients treated with oxaliplatin is severe peripheral neuropathy with symptoms including cold sensitivity and neuropathic pain. Rat models have been used to describe the pathological features of oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy; however, they are inadequate for parallel studies of oxaliplatin's antineoplastic activity and neurotoxicity because most cancer models are developed in mice. Thus, we characterized the effects of chronic, bi-weekly administration of oxaliplatin in BALB/c mice. We first studied oxaliplatin's effects on the peripheral nervous system by measuring caudal and digital nerve conduction velocities (NCV) followed by ultrastructural and morphometric analyses of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and sciatic nerves. To further characterize the model, we examined nocifensive behavior and central nervous system excitability by <it>in vivo </it>electrophysiological recording of spinal dorsal horn (SDH) wide dynamic range neurons in oxaliplatin-treated mice</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found significantly decreased NCV and action potential amplitude after oxaliplatin treatment along with neuronal atrophy and multinucleolated DRG neurons that have eccentric nucleoli. Oxaliplatin also induced significant mechanical allodynia and cold hyperalgesia, starting from the first week of treatment, and a significant increase in the activity of wide dynamic range neurons in the SDH.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our findings demonstrate that chronic treatment with oxaliplatin produces neurotoxic changes in BALB/c mice, confirming that this model is a suitable tool to conduct further mechanistic studies of oxaliplatin-related antineoplastic activity, peripheral neurotoxicity and pain. Further, this model can be used for the preclinical discovery of new neuroprotective and analgesic compounds.</p

Structure antigénique du Nématode

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, parasite du rat et agent de la méningite à éosinophiles de l’homme, présente une mosaïque antigénique complexe. Parmi les 25 composants antigéniques mis en évidence par l’analyse immuno-électrophorétique de l’extrait de vers adultes, deux semblent jouer un rôle prépondérant. L’étude de l’extrait antigénique larvaire n’a permis de révéler que quinze composants. Il existe des parentés antigéniques restreintes avec les Cestodes et les Trématodes (2) et plus nombreuses avec les Nématodes (6). Des parentés ont été observées entre le parasite, l’hôte intermédiaire et l’hôte définitif et peuvent expliquer un des aspects des modalités de l’adaptation parasitaire. La connaissance théorique de l’antigène Angiostrongylus cantonensis a été complétée par l’étude des anticorps précitants élaborés au cours de l’angiostrongylose expérimentale du rat en fonction de la chronologie et de l’intensité de l’infestation. Chez l’homme où Angiostrongylus cantonensis est en impasse parasitaire et ne dépasse pas le stade larvaire, les anticorps précipitants sont mis en évidence aussi bien par l’antigène extrait d’adultes que de larves

Impact of the increasing use of immunosuppressants in Crohn’s disease on the need for intestinal surgery

Background/Aim: Immunosuppressants are now used much earlier in the course of Crohn’s disease; however their effect on the natural history of the disease, especially on the need for surgery, is not known. The aim of this study was to assess the evolution of the need for surgery in Crohn’s disease during the last 25 years. Patients and Methods: The medical charts of 2573 patients were reviewed retrospectively. The use of immunosuppressants (azathioprine or methotrexate), the need for intestinal resection, and the occurrence of intestinal complications were assessed using Kaplan-Meier analysis in five consecutive cohorts of patients defined by the date of diagnosis of Crohn’s disease (1978–82; 1983–87; 1988–92; 1993–97; 1998–2002). Results: In 565 patients seen in the authors’ unit within the first three months after diagnosis, characteristics of Crohn’s disease at diagnosis did not differ from one cohort to another. The five year cumulative probability to receive immunosuppressants increased from 0 in the 1978–82 cohort to 0.13, 0.25, 0.25, and 0.56 in the 1983–87, 1988–92, 1993–97, and 1998–2002 cohorts, respectively (p<0.001). Concomitantly, the cumulative risk of intestinal resection remained unchanged (from 0.35 to 0.34 at five years; p = 0.81). The cumulative risk of developing a stricturing or a penetrating intestinal complication remained also unchanged. Similar results were obtained in the 2008 patients seen during the same period who were referred to us more than three months after diagnosis. Conclusion: Although immunosuppressants have been used more frequently over the last 25 years, there was no significant decrease of the need for surgery, or of intestinal complications of Crohn’s disease
