    Fermi surface induced lattice distortion in NbTe2_2

    The origin of the monoclinic distortion and domain formation in the quasi two-dimensional layer compound NbTe2_2 is investigated. Angle-resolved photoemission shows that the Fermi surface is pseudogapped over large portions of the Brillouin zone. Ab initio calculation of the electron and phonon bandstructure as well as the static RPA susceptibility lead us to conclude that Fermi surface nesting and electron-phonon coupling play a key role in the lowering of the crystal symmetry and in the formation of the charge density wave phase

    Quasiparticle spectrum in a nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid: shadow and flat bands

    We consider a two-dimensional Fermi liquid in the vicinity of a spin-density-wave transition to a phase with commensurate antiferromagnetic long-range order. We assume that near the transition, the Fermi surface is large and crosses the magnetic Brillouin zone boundary. We show that under these conditions, the self-energy corrections to the dynamical spin susceptibility, χ(q,ω)\chi (q, \omega), and to the quasiparticle spectral function function, A(k,ω)A(k, \omega), are divergent near the transition. We identify and sum the series of most singular diagrams, and obtain a solution for χ(q,ω)\chi(q, \omega) and an approximate solution for A(k,ω)A(k, \omega). We show that (i) A(k)A(k) at a given, small ω\omega has an extra peak at k=kF+πk = k_F + \pi (`shadow band'), and (ii) the dispersion near the crossing points is much flatter than for free electrons. The relevance of these results to recent photoemission experiments in YBCOYBCO and Bi2212Bi2212 systems is discussed.Comment: a sign and amplitude of the vertex renormalization and few typos are correcte

    Exciton condensation driving the periodic lattice distortion of 1T-TiSe2

    We address the lattice instability of 1T-TiSe2 in the framework of the exciton condensate phase. We show that, at low temperature, condensed excitons influence the lattice through electron-phonon interaction. It is found that at zero temperature, in the exciton condensate phase of 1T-TiSe2, this exciton condensate exerts a force on the lattice generating ionic displacements comparable in amplitude to what is measured in experiment. This is thus the first quantitative estimation of the amplitude of the periodic lattice distortion observed in 1T-TiSe2 as a consequence of the exciton condensate phase.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures and 1 tabl

    Electronic Structure of the YH3 Phase from Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

    Yttrium can be loaded with hydrogen up to high concentrations causing dramatic structural and electronic changes of the host lattice. We report on angle-resolved photoemission experiments of the Y trihydride phase. Most importantly, we find the absence of metal d-bands at the Fermi level and a set of flat, H-induced bands located at much higher binding energy than predicted, indicating an increased electron affinity at H sites

    A quick method to isolate pure DNA from asexual spores of Coprinus cinereus for screening approaches

    In this study, we present a glass bead-phenol method to isolate genomic DNA from oidia of the basidiomycete Coprinus cinereus. The DNA can be used in Southern blot analysis with digoxigenin-labelled DNA probes without the background problems encountered with DNA isolated from fungal mycelium. Furthermore, DNA isolated from oidia can be applied in PCR. This is especially useful when searching for specific DNA sequences or recombination events in a mixture of different strains
