The looping rate and sandpile density of planar graphs
We give a simple formula for the looping rate of loop-erased random walk on a
finite planar graph. The looping rate is closely related to the expected amount
of sand in a recurrent sandpile on the graph. The looping rate formula is
well-suited to taking limits where the graph tends to an infinite lattice, and
we use it to give an elementary derivation of the (previously computed) looping
rate and sandpile densities of the square, triangular, and honeycomb lattices,
and compute (for the first time) the looping rate and sandpile densities of
many other lattices, such as the kagome lattice, the dice lattice, and the
truncated hexagonal lattice (for which the values are all rational), and the
square-octagon lattice (for which it is transcendental)

возникшие между ними противоречия и несоответствия. Исследуется достороверность
футурологических прогнозов Гибсона. Перечисляются основные достижения науки на данном поприще
и сравниваются с литературными предсказаниями Гибсона. Изучается характер героев произведений
Гибсона. Приводится характеристика киберпространства – термина, впервые введённого Гибсоном в

между ними противоречия и несоответствия. Подробнее рассматривается литературный
трансгуманизм и его функционирование в литературной среде. Выделяются разновидности

immortalism. The innovations of Gibson’s literature are analyzed. The environmental concept in Gibson’s
settings is examined, compared to the ideas of technogaianism; the resulting contradictions and disparities
arising between them are specified. The faithfulness of Gibson’s futurological forecast is probed. Basic
achievements of science are compared to the futurological estimates of Gibson. Typical personal traits of the
main characters of Gibson’s novels are studied. The description of cyberspace, the term first coined by Gibson,
is brought. Novels of Gibson are compared to the ideas of scientific immortalism, the resulting contradictions
and disparities arising between them are specified. Literary transhumanism and its functioning in literature are
examined in more details. The varieties of transhumanistic art are pointed out. Comparative parallels are
conducted between some artistic receptions of science fiction and cyberpunk. As a result, the connection between
his cyberpunk works and ideas of transhumanism is determined
Efficient First-order Methods for Convex Minimization: a Constructive Approach
We describe a novel constructive technique for devising efficient first-order
methods for a wide range of large-scale convex minimization settings, including
smooth, non-smooth, and strongly convex minimization. The technique builds upon
a certain variant of the conjugate gradient method to construct a family of
methods such that a) all methods in the family share the same worst-case
guarantee as the base conjugate gradient method, and b) the family includes a
fixed-step first-order method. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach
by deriving optimal methods for the smooth and non-smooth cases, including new
methods that forego knowledge of the problem parameters at the cost of a
one-dimensional line search per iteration, and a universal method for the union
of these classes that requires a three-dimensional search per iteration. In the
strongly convex case, we show how numerical tools can be used to perform the
construction, and show that the resulting method offers an improved worst-case
bound compared to Nesterov's celebrated fast gradient method.Comment: Accepted in Mathematical Programming

Traffic jams and intermittent flows in microfluidic networks
We investigate both experimentally and theoretically the traffic of particles
flowing in microfluidic obstacle networks. We show that the traffic dynamics is
a non-linear process: the particle current does not scale with the particle
density even in the dilute limit where no particle collision occurs. We
demonstrate that this non-linear behavior stems from long range hydrodynamic
interactions. Importantly, we also establish that there exists a maximal
current above which no stationary particle flow can be sustained. For higher
current values, intermittent traffic jams form thereby inducing the ejection of
the particles from the initial path and the subsequent invasion of the network.
Eventually, we put our findings in the broader context of the transport
proccesses of driven particles in low dimension
