Policewomen: College Students’ Perceptions Of Women In Policing
Throughout history women have worked hard to enter the workplace without prejudice. More often than not, women were faced with negative public perceptions concluding they do not belong in male-dominated professions. However, over time, women have proven they can be just as good as, if not better than their male counterparts. This has been found to be true in war factories during World War II and on the streets with female police officers. Women, however, are still underrepresented when it comes to their roles in policing. This study is an exploratory examination of college students’ perceptions of women in policing. This study is looking at potential trends in students’ attitudes and how they may or may not have changed since Golden (1981) and Austin and Hummer (1994; 2000). Undergraduate criminal justice students who are potentially future law enforcement officers were surveyed in 2006 and 2015 at the University of North Dakota. Results show college students’ perceptions overall have improved. Despite one’s personal views towards women in policing, there is a pervasive skepticism towards citizen and male officer perceptions
Perpendicular transport properties of YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}/PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} superlattices
The coupling between the superconducting planes of YBa2Cu3O{7-\delta}/
PrBa2Cu3O{7-\delta} superlattices has been measured by c-axis transport. We
show that only by changing the thickness of the superconducting
YBa2Cu3O{7-\delta} layers, it is possible to switch between quasi-particle and
Josephson tunneling. From our data we deduce a low temperature c-axis coherence
length of 0.27 nm.Comment: Presented at LT22, contains 2 pages and 2 figures. to appear in

Ferroelectricity and structure of BaTiO3 grown on YBa2Cu3O7-d thin films
We have investigated the crystal structure and the ferroelectric properties
of BaTiO3 thin films with YBa2Cu3O7-d as the bottom and Au as the top
electrode. Epitaxial heterostructures of YBa2Cu3O7-d and BaTiO3 were prepared
by dc and rf sputtering, respectively. The crystal structure of the films was
characterised by x-ray diffraction. The ferroelectric behaviour of the BaTiO3
films was confirmed by hysteresis loop measurements using a Sawyer Tower
circuit. We obtain a coercive field of 30 kV/cm and a remanent polarisation of
1.25 \muC/cm. At sub-switching fields the capacitance of the films obeys a
relation analogous to the Rayleigh law. This behaviour indicates an interaction
of domain walls with randomly distributed pinning centres. At a field of 5 MV/m
we calculate 3% contribution of irreversible domain wall motion to the total
dielectric constant.Comment: 12 pages and 9 figure
eCHASE: Exploiting Cultural Heritage using the Semantic Web
The eCHASE project is using semantic web technologies to demonstrate sustainable business models based on access and exploitation of digital cultural heritage content at a European level. In this paper we describe the eCHASE project and outline the system architecture
Quantification of biomass feedstock availability to a biorefinery based on multi-crop rotation cropping systems using a GIS-based method
The feasibility of utilizing cellulosic biomass as an energy feedstock is dominated by factors such as facility location, feedstock availability, and transportation cost. Our previous case study showed improvements in quantification of feedstock availability for a biorefinery by introducing the effect of field-level yield variance and variable residue removal rates as improvement parameters into the GIS-based analysis. Even though the improved GIS-based method enhanced quantification of feedstock availability with the addition of the improvement parameters, a biorefinery would most likely procure more than one feedstock type. In this case study, quantification of feedstock availability based on multi-crop rotation cropping systems was done using the previously improved GIS-based variable residue removal (VRR) method. We observed on average a 3,793 ±5,733 DT per service area difference when increasing the number of crops used to estimate feedstock quantification. The supplementary use of crop-specific VRR rates affected residue availability, given that a crop’s residue removal rate is influenced by crop yield, crop rotation, soil characteristics, as well as field location and management. It was also observed that the amount of available hectares of the three main crops analyzed in this case study affected residue availability. Corn represented 26.2% (440,636 ha; 1,101,591 acres), sorghum represented 12.9% (217,432 ha; 543,579 acres), and wheat represented 60.9% (1,024,607 ha; 2,561,518 acres) of the hectares in the study area. The validation study showed the importance of taking into account the seasonal availability of crop residue when estimating procurement service areas, given that in some cases feedstock requirements were not met
Design Methodology for Rehabilitation Robots: Application in an Exoskeleton for Upper Limb Rehabilitation
This article presents a methodology for the design of rehabilitation devices that considers factors involved in a clinical environment. This methodology integrates different disciplines that work together. The methodology is composed by three phases and 13 stages with specific tasks, the first phase includes the clinical context considering the requirements of the patient and therapist during the rehabilitation, the second phase is focused in engineering based on the philosophy of digital twin, and in the third phase is evaluated the device. This article explains the characteristics of the methodology and how it was applied in the design of an exoskeleton for passive rehabilitation of upper limb
Juvenile Risk Assessment: Assessing the Evaluability and Predictive Validity of the Youth Assessment and Screening Instrument for use among the North Dakota Juvenile Probation Population
Risk assessment using an actuarial instrument represents one of eight core evidence-based practices (EBP) in community supervision recognized by the National Institute of Corrections (NIC). Despite the widespread adoption of a variety of instruments, many jurisdictions have not assessed their predictive validity. This research examines the evaluability of a risk assessment instrument, the Youth Assessment & Screening Instrument (YASI), adopted by the North Dakota Juvenile Court. The instrument has been in use since 2002. While studies of the YASI from New York State, Illinois, and Canada provide some confidence in the instrument\u27s predictive accuracy, questions still remain concerning its applicability to female and Native American populations
