Analytical results for the confinement mechanism in QCD_3
We present analytical methods for investigating the interaction of two heavy
quarks in QCD_3 using the effective action approach. Our findings result in
explicit expressions for the static potentials in QCD_3 for long and short
distances. With regard to confinement, our conclusion reflects many features
found in the more realistic world of QCD_4.Comment: 24 pages, uses REVTe

Efficient Monte Carlo for high excursions of Gaussian random fields
Our focus is on the design and analysis of efficient Monte Carlo methods for
computing tail probabilities for the suprema of Gaussian random fields, along
with conditional expectations of functionals of the fields given the existence
of excursions above high levels, b. Na\"{i}ve Monte Carlo takes an exponential,
in b, computational cost to estimate these probabilities and conditional
expectations for a prescribed relative accuracy. In contrast, our Monte Carlo
procedures achieve, at worst, polynomial complexity in b, assuming only that
the mean and covariance functions are H\"{o}lder continuous. We also explain
how to fine tune the construction of our procedures in the presence of
additional regularity, such as homogeneity and smoothness, in order to further
improve the efficiency.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/11-AAP792 the Annals of

Weyl Geometry as Characterization of Space-Time
Motivated by an axiomatic approach to characterize space-time it is
investigated a reformulation of Einstein's gravity where the pseudo-riemannian
geometry is substituted by a Weyl one. It is presented the main properties of
the Weyl geometry and it is shown that it gives extra contributions to the
trajectories of test particles, serving as one more motivation to study general
relativity in Weyl geometry. It is introduced its variational formalism and it
is established the coupling with other physical fields in such a way that the
theory acquires a gauge symmetry for the geometrical fields. It is shown that
this symmetry is still present for the red-shift and it is concluded that for
cosmological models it opens the possibility that observations can be fully
described by the new geometrical scalar field. It is concluded then that this
reformulation, although representing a theoretical advance, still needs a
complete description of their objects.Comment: 12 page
Monte Carlo Quasi-Heatbath by approximate inversion
When sampling the distribution P(phi) ~ exp(-|A phi|^2), a global heatbath
normally proceeds by solving the linear system A phi = eta, where eta is a
normal Gaussian vector, exactly. This paper shows how to preserve the
distribution P(phi) while solving the linear system with arbitrarily low
accuracy. Generalizations are presented.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure; typos corrected, reference added; version to

An Energy-Minimization Finite-Element Approach for the Frank-Oseen Model of Nematic Liquid Crystals: Continuum and Discrete Analysis
This paper outlines an energy-minimization finite-element approach to the
computational modeling of equilibrium configurations for nematic liquid
crystals under free elastic effects. The method targets minimization of the
system free energy based on the Frank-Oseen free-energy model. Solutions to the
intermediate discretized free elastic linearizations are shown to exist
generally and are unique under certain assumptions. This requires proving
continuity, coercivity, and weak coercivity for the accompanying appropriate
bilinear forms within a mixed finite-element framework. Error analysis
demonstrates that the method constitutes a convergent scheme. Numerical
experiments are performed for problems with a range of physical parameters as
well as simple and patterned boundary conditions. The resulting algorithm
accurately handles heterogeneous constant coefficients and effectively resolves
configurations resulting from complicated boundary conditions relevant in
ongoing research.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figures, 3 table
Quaternions, octonions and Bell-type inequalities
Multipartite Bell-type inequalities are derived for general systems. They
involve up to eight observables with arbitrary spectra on each site. These
inequalities are closely related to the algebras of quaternions and octonions.Comment: 4 pages, no figure
