Automatic sample rotator for metallographic polishing
Simple, inexpensive device can be attached to most metallographic sample polishing tables. It provides a suitable surface finish for microscopic examination or photography of surface details of the samples
Test of the Skyrme Effective Field Theory Using Quenched Lattice QCD
The Skyrme effective field theory is tested by evaluating nucleon ground
state matrix elements of the correlation functions for two flavor density
operators and two pseudoscalar density operators in the Skyrme model and
comparing them with results in quenched lattice QCD. The possiblility of using
quenched lattice QCD to study higher-order terms in effective field theory is
also discussed.Comment: 20 pages in TeX, 6 figures added using "figures", MIT-CTP-200
Digital compression algorithms for HDTV transmission
Digital compression of video images is a possible avenue for high definition television (HDTV) transmission. Compression needs to be optimized while picture quality remains high. Two techniques for compression the digital images are explained and comparisons are drawn between the human vision system and artificial compression techniques. Suggestions for improving compression algorithms through the use of neural and analog circuitry are given
Deep Space Network utilization for flight projects, calendar year 1981
A report on the utilization of the Deep Space Network during calendar year 1981 in support of all flight projects is presented. The network expended 63% of its total capability in support of Space Flight projects
Normal Mode Spectrum of the Deuteron in the Skyrme Model
The normal mode spectrum of the deuteron in the Skyrme model is computed. We
find a bound doublet mode below the pion mass, which can be related to the
well-known scattering of two skyrmions. We also find a singlet
`breather' mode and another doublet above the pion mass. The qualitative
pattern of the spectrum is similar to that recently found for the B=4
multiskyrmion. The symmetries of all the vibrational modes are presented.Comment: LaTeX, 10 pages, 3 figure
Unraveling the Veil: The Concepts of Limited Liability and Disregard of the Corporate Entity
An overview of limited liability and the doctrine of piercing the corporate veil. I focus on the factors courts consider in determining whether to disregard the corporate entity
alpha^2 corrections to parapositronium decay: a detailed description
We present details of our recent calculation of alpha^2 corrections to the
parapositronium decay into two photons. These corrections are rather small and
our final result for the parapositronium lifetime agrees well with the most
recent measurement. Implications for orthopositronium decays are briefly
discussed.Comment: 18 pages, late
