    Pattern of presentation and management of lip injuries in a Nigerian hospital

    Aim: Human lip injuries, although uncommon, present major challenges in terms of reconstructive options and the outcome of surgical management. The reconstructive techniques are usually varied but the ultimate objectives of treatment are to achieve healing, function, and aesthetics. The aim of this study was to report the etiology, pattern of presentation, and surgical management of lip injuries in Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).Materials and Methods: A prospective study of consecutive cases of lip injury was conducted at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Data collected included age and sex of patients, etiology, pattern of presentation, and surgical techniques of repair.Results: A total of 13 patients with lip injury to the lip were included in the study (M = 6, F = 7). Human bite (11 cases) was the most common cause of injury followed by electric burns (2 cases). The most (81.8%) frequently affected site was the lower lip. Most patients presented within 72 hours after injury with infected wound. Treatment offered included thorough debridement and primary repair using various surgical techniques. A one-stage surgical technique was employed in all cases. Healing was uneventful in all cases and satisfactory.Conclusion: Most of the lip injuries in the present study were due to human bites with almost equal sex distribution. Lower lip was most commonly affected. All cases were successfully treated by debridement, broad spectrum antibiotic coverage, and one-stage surgical repair with a favorable outcome

    Histological and biochemical effects of Arteethertm on the liver of wistar rats

    ArteetherTM is among the recent drugs that are used to combat chloroquine-resistant malarial parasites. This study examined the effects of arteetherTM on enzyme biomarkers of the liver, serum protein concentrations, and liver morphology. Twenty (20) adult albino Wistar rats weighing 200 – 250 g were randomly divided into four groups (A, B, C and D) of five animals each, and used in this study. Group A rats were given intramuscular (i. m.) arteetherTM (3 mg/kg b. w.) daily for 3 days.Group B rats received i. m. arteetherTM (6 mg/kg b. w.) daily for 3 days. Group C rats were given i. m. arteetherTM (3 mg/kg b. w.) daily for 3 days. The same dose was repeated at two-weekly intervals for 4 further weeks, while group D rats which received normal saline (0.9 % w/ v, 3 ml/kg b.w.), served as controls. At the end of the experiment, the body weights of the animals were determined and recorded. Serum levels of alanine  transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (ASP), alkaline phosphatase(ALP), total protein (TP) and albumin were assayed, and histological studies were performed. Results obtained show no significant difference (P<0.05) in liver enzymes (ALT, ASP, ALP). TP and albumin were significantly reduced in group C rats. Histological studies revealed no cyto-architectural changes. It is concluded that at therapeutic doses, arteetherTM is well tolerated in Wistar rats. .Key Words: ArteetherTM; Malaria; Liver enzymes; Serum protein concentrations; Morphology; Wistar rat

    A second generation human haplotype map of over 3.1 million SNPs

    We describe the Phase II HapMap, which characterizes over 3.1 million human single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genotyped in 270 individuals from four geographically diverse populations and includes 25-35% of common SNP variation in the populations surveyed. The map is estimated to capture untyped common variation with an average maximum r(2) of between 0.9 and 0.96 depending on population. We demonstrate that the current generation of commercial genome-wide genotyping products captures common Phase II SNPs with an average maximum r(2) of up to 0.8 in African and up to 0.95 in non-African populations, and that potential gains in power in association studies can be obtained through imputation. These data also reveal novel aspects of the structure of linkage disequilibrium. We show that 10-30% of pairs of individuals within a population share at least one region of extended genetic identity arising from recent ancestry and that up to 1% of all common variants are untaggable, primarily because they lie within recombination hotspots. We show that recombination rates vary systematically around genes and between genes of different function. Finally, we demonstrate increased differentiation at non-synonymous, compared to synonymous, SNPs, resulting from systematic differences in the strength or efficacy of natural selection between populations.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/62863/1/nature06258.pd

    Omics-based molecular techniques in oral pathology centred cancer: Prospect and challenges in Africa

    : The completion of the human genome project and the accomplished milestones in the human proteome project; as well as the progress made so far in computational bioinformatics and “big data” processing have contributed immensely to individualized/personalized medicine in the developed world.At the dawn of precision medicine, various omics-based therapies and bioengineering can now be applied accurately for the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and risk stratifcation of cancer in a manner that was hitherto not thought possible. The widespread introduction of genomics and other omics-based approaches into the postgraduate training curriculum of diverse medical and dental specialties, including pathology has improved the profciency of practitioners in the use of novel molecular signatures in patient management. In addition, intricate details about disease disparity among diferent human populations are beginning to emerge. This would facilitate the use of tailor-made novel theranostic methods based on emerging molecular evidences

    An Audit of Malignant Oro‑facial Tumors Presenting at a Tertiary Hospital in Lagos

    Oro‑facial malignancies are reported to have a high mortality and morbidity, this is further worsened when patient report late. To analyze the malignant oro‑facial lesions seen at a Hospital in the Lagos, Nigeria. Successive patients that presented in the hospital and met criteria of study during 15 months period were recruited into the study. Demographics, clinical variables, and treatment provided for each patient in the hospital was recorded. Data collected were presented as tables and percentages. There were 36 cases seen, their ages ranged from 10 to 72 years (median 49 years), and there were 21 males and 15 females. Time lapse before presentation to the clinic ranged from 2 to 30 months, mean (9.9 (±5.5 months and the largest dimension of lesions at presentation ranged from 2 cm to 12 cm (mean 6.4 ± 2.0 cm). Most common site of presentation was posterior tongue (16.7%; 6/36) and Squamous cell carcinoma (41.6%; 15/36) was the most common histopathologic diagnosis. Twenty‑three patients (63.9%; 23/36) had primary surgeries in the hospital. Patients seen in this case series generally reported late with large lesions.Keywords: Malignant, Orofacial, Tumour

    Cancrum nasalis: a case report

    Cancrum nasalis, a variant of cancrum oris, is an oro-facial condition that is rarely reported in the literature. Predisposing factors include malnutrition, infection and reduced immunity. This paper reports a case of a 10 month-old child patient who presented with an isolated necrosis of the nose extending to the cutaneous part of the upper lip without oral manifestation, a rare clinical presentation. A maculo-papular rash which was diagnosed as measles preceeded the necrosis of the nose and the child was also seen to be malnourished at presentation. Laboratory investigations and clinical management of the condition are described. It is also suggested that the public should be continuosly educated on the importance of balanced diet and routine medical check for growing children.
