    Digital Control of External Devices through the Parallel Port of a Computer Using Visual Basic

    In this paper we carry out the digital control of external devices using the parallel port of a computer. The PC parallel port adapter that is specically designed to attach printers has been found to be useful as a general input/output port for any device or application that matches its input/output capabilities. This paper gives details and involves the design and construction of the parallel port power switching device and its associated control program (Device Controller). The Unit is capable of simultaneously and sequentially powering ON/OFF eight external devices depending on the number of bits sent to the port. However, with the presence of overflow signal to four additional ports, the unit can power up to twelve external devices. The control program causes the computer port to generate an actuating signal (the controlling voltage of 5V) which drives an electrically isolated circuit with a relay.     Mobile devices and mobile networks are becoming more data-centric (evident in Japanese I-mode) even as mobile network voice Average Revenue Per User are declining, new stream of data services are required which must take cognisance of handhelds features albeit their small screen estate and input/output limitations.     Instant messaging on handhelds: an affective gesture approach

    Text communication can be perceived as lacking in chat spontaneity, or plastic, due to medium limitations during interaction. A form of text messaging, Instant Messaging (IM), is now on the uptake, even on mobile handhelds. This paper presents results of using affective gesture to rubberise IM chat in order to improve synchronous communication spontaneity. The experimental design makes use of a text-only IM tool, running on handhelds, built with the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the SIP Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE). The tool was developed with a novel user-defined hotkey – a one-click context menu that fast-tracks the creation and transmission of text-gestures and emoticons. A hybrid quantitative and qualitative approach was taken in order to enable data triangulation.     A text only Instant Messaging (IM) built on the IETF open standard SIP/SIMPLE has been developed in line with our proposed introduction of a user-defined text Hotkey feature. These act as an on-click Affective Gesture (AG): in similitude to Face-to-Face (F2F) expressive gesture-like abilities. Given that text communication possesses expressive discourse with some presence level, we seek to show that one-click text-gesture fast-tracking enhances text communication further. For this study, we are taking a hybrid quantitative and qualitative approach. Initial Pre-trial results have shown that an AG approach is more likely to improve IM chat spontaneity/response rate. Further experimental trials are being undertaken.     Handheld fast-track feedback instant messaging

    As mobile devices and networks become more data-centric, text messaging requires an extension of co-presence capabilities for better interactive discussion between input/output handicapped handheld users and their free form desktop counterparts. Given some degree of co-presence (online presence and awareness) in text-based Instant Messaging, we hope to increase this co-presence on a handheld with fast-track feedback (FF) mechanisms. These are user-defined gestures, such as emoticons, and prioritised messages. We are building a system that facilitates gesture input within an interactive text-based chat over a wireless network running Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). The chat bridges a robust desktop environment and a small number of handhelds. This work in progress looks into the SIP Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions as a platform to provide fast-track interactive and co-presence feedback. The aim is to rubberise a hitherto plastic and limited instant messaging conversation. We shall measure co-presence levels between FF and standard IM environments in and without desktop and handhelds by engaging two groups of users in chats session. We expect to demonstrate that there exists high co-presence notion in open (work by Sun Research Awarenex Group and AT&T Hubbubme in similar domain were in closed systems) FF text messaging open environment as we would like to show that this higher presence brings a much more enhanced interactive discourse.     Multilingualism as a learning scaffolding element: Reflection on first-year Information Communication Technology networking students

    This reflective paper reports on the approach taken and the lesson learnt in introducing multilingualism as a Writing-To-Learn (WTL) strategy for active learning, especially for large classes. WTL strategies are well entrenched in social and humanities courses as opposed to ‘technical’ courses such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Multilingualism was introduced from two main angles: glossaries, and trans-languaging. The findings show that glossaries of technical ICT networking terminologies in isiXhosa and Afrikaans are currently limited. A follow-up project would be required to address this. It was further noted that students have varying levels of knowledge and comprehension of their mother tongues, partly by reason of upbringing, exposure or association. The paper concludes that when multilingualism is introduced as part of teaching and learning scaffolding elements, it must have the potential to open up students to a better grasp of the ICT networking course concepts and discipline domain

    IDADA: towards a multimethod methodological framework for PhD by publication underpinned by critical realism

    Abstract PhD by publication, a route of attaining a ‘doctorate’, is growing in adoption, yet has not gained universal acceptance. Whilst doctoral students are expected to free range, be independent in their study, and contribute to knowledge, there is a tendency to be schooled or mainly assessed along the lines of positivism and interpretivism. This paper, in part the author’s situational reflexivity and noting Liezel Frick’s “PhD by publication – panacea or paralysis?”, carried out a documentary analysis of academic regulations of 101 universities in the UK, South Africa, Ireland, Australia, and examined the literature for demi-regularities supporting or inhibiting critical realism in doctoral studies. It followed a (multimethod) plural approach. The examination revealed that critical realism is sparse in doctoral studies, and universities do not cohere in nomenclature and ‘form’ of PhD by publication. In filling the ‘free range’ gap, this paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on PhD by publication by introducing the IDADA (‘identify’, ‘define’, ‘analyse’, ‘develop’ and ‘apply’) methodological framework. The framework evolved from the demi-regularities understudied. IDADA is a practical solution-centric, methodological approach to PhD by publication. The paper calls on researchers and practitioners to be open to structured and ‘alternate’ approaches to research whilst ensuring ontological, epistemological, and axiomatic rigour. Researchers need not approach research religiously — as that of a particular paradigm sect; but rather embrace ‘practical adequacy’. Doctoral students should be encouraged to produce research output with more significant impact through interrogation and unearthing phenomena rather than just “observing, outlining and discussing findings” or conforming to ‘writing style’

Attaining some level of interaction naturalism requires improving synchronous communication spontaneity, partly achieved by enhancing input mechanisms. To enhance input mechanisms for interactive text-based chat on mobile devices, there is a need to facilitate gesture input. Enhancement is achievable in a number of ways, such as input mechanism redesigning and input offering adaptation. This thesis explores affective gesture mode on interface redesign as an input offering adaptation. This is done without a major physical reconstruction of handheld devices. This thesis presents a text only IM system built on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE).
