Since every class of students with hearing disability is always a heterogeneous one, the need for establishing relationship between some intrinsic factors in these students and their academic achievements becomes very imperative. This study therefore examined the influence of onset of hearing loss, gender and self concept on their academic performance in English language. 100 Senior Secondary School class III students with hearing disability were purposively selected to participate in the study. The study also raised 3 hypotheses to ascertain relationships between onset of hearing loss, gender, and self concept and English language achievement. Instruments such as the self concept scale of the Adolescent Personal Data Inventory, Adapted English Language Test and Audiological Reports were used. Findings showed that postlingually hearing disabled students were superior to their prelingually hearing-disabled colleagues, male students did better than female students and student with high self concept outclassed those with low self concept. It was therefore recommended that teachers and curriculum developers should adequately consider these findings in teaching and curriculum development activities

The primitive idea, culturally construed that male sex is superior to female sex has conveniently penetrated itself to the modern Africa particularly Nigeria:Ā  a country in the western part of the content.Ā  The effects of sexism are felt in almost every sphere of life.Ā  This is heavily pronounced in the area of education most especially in the colonial era and to a reasonable extent in the post-colonial period.Ā  This has made the women fold to suffer a conspicuous set almost in most every human endeavour. Men are heard everywhere.Ā  TheĀ Ā  need for women to realise their potentials so that they can be more useful to themselves and contribute meaningfully to their community led to series of educative campaign against sexism: a major fall out of patriarchy.Ā  Literary artists are very significant in this regard, the example of Alkali in the Virtuous Woman.Ā  The paper examines such effort as revealed in the novel particularly that, such awareness and education given are yielding results.Ā  In recent time, evidences abound which, prove that both men and women have the natural ability to do well in education if given the opportunity. The fact that some Nigerians in real life, in spite of the enlightenments and the development so far still behave like Dogo in Alkaliā€™s The Virtuous Woman makes sexism remains a challenge which, should be overcome

This study examined the effectiveness of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) and Assertiveness Skills Training (AST) on healthy sexual behaviours among adolescents with learning disabilities in Ibadan, Nigeria. It also examined the moderating effects of age and gender. A pretest-posttest, control group, quasi-experimental design of 3x2x2 factorial matrix was adopted. Eighty-four adolescents with learning disabilities (42 males and 42 females) were purposively selected from three randomly selected public secondary schools in Ibadan metropolis. They were randomly assigned into two treatment conditions (REBT and AST) and control group consisting of 28 participants each. The training programmes lasted ten weeks. Three instruments were used for screening: Pupil Rating Scale (Ī± = 0.71), Sexual Abstinence Scale (Ī± = 0.89) and Safe Sex Behaviour Questionnaire (Ī± = 0.79) while Adolescents with Learning Disabilitiesā€™ Sexual Behaviour Scale (Ī± = 0.76) was used for data collection. Five hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Analysis of Covariance. Early adolescents (10-13 years) and middle adolescents (14-16 years) were used for the study. There were significant main effects of treatments (F(2, 71) = 61.95; Ī·2 =0.64, = 165.35 ) and (F(2, 71) = 61.95; Ī·2 =0.64, = 159.64) on healthy sexual behaviours of adolescents with learning disabilities. Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy had a higher mean score ( = 165.35) than those exposed to Assertiveness Skills Training ( = 159.64) while those in the control group had the lowest mean score (( = 145.29). There was an observed interactive effects of treatment, age and gender on healthy sexual behaviours of adolescents with learning disabilities (F(2, 71) = 3.49; Ī·2 =0.09). Both treatment conditions were effective in fostering healthy sexual behaviours among adolescents with learning disabilities regardless of age or gender. Article visualizations
