    This study investigated Information Services Provision for Access and Utilization of Agricultural Science Students in National Agricultural Extension Research and Liaison Services (NAERLS), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The study aimed at finding out the types of agricultural information services required for access and use by agricultural science students from NAERLS, ABU, Zaria and the level of awareness of agricultural science students on agricultural information services provided by NAERLS, ABU, Zaria. The study adopted quantitative research method using descriptive research design. The population of the study was 995 and a sample size of 320 was drawn for the study from agricultural science students in Faculty of Agriculture, ABU, Zaria. Questionnaire was the instrument used and in order to incorporate all respondents in all levels, proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting respondents for the study. Data collected were sorted and analysed using frequency tables, simple percentages and descriptive mean of Standard Deviation. Findings revealed that agricultural science students of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria access and use Technical/Scientific and Commercial Agricultural Information Services and are aware of these services. Consequently, the study recommended that NAERLS and her international bodies should create more awareness on the availability of these agricultural information services as they are of importance to the entire students of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and not the agricultural science students alone. Also efforts should be intensified on creating a pact between NAERLS, their international agencies and their immediate environment which they are expected to serve on the available services for effective and efficient use.     Preliminary study of perceived cardiovascular disease risk and risk status of adults in small rural and urban locations in Ibadan, Nigeria

    The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been on the rise in developing countries like Nigeria recently. Studies on perceived CVD risk and the risk status of adults in Ibadan are not readily available, hence this study. A mixed-method design involving a cross-sectional survey and an exploratory qualitative study was utilized. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 418 participants (209 from rural and 209 from urban) for the cross-sectional survey, while purposive sampling was used to recruit 14 participants for the qualitative aspect. The INTERHEART risk score and the Perception of Risk of Heart Disease Scale were used to investigate participants' CVD risk status and perceived risk, respectively. The data from the cross-sectional survey were summarized by using descriptive statistics, and the data were then analyzed by using the chi-square test of association and a multiple logistic regression model, while content thematic analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. In the rural and urban areas, respectively, 39.7% and 52.2% had a positive perception of CVD risk. In the rural and urban areas, 44% and 41.6% of individuals respectively had moderate-to-high risk of CVD. Participants with at least secondary school education [2.66 (0.61–11.53)] and participants in the urban area [2.62 (0.78–7.08)] had twice higher odds of positive CVD risk perception. Males [3.91 (1.58–9.68)], adults aged 40 and above [1.59 (0.63–4.00)] and urban dwellers [1.21 (0.33–4.39)] had higher odds of a high CVD risk status. The qualitative aspect of the study corroborated the findings from the survey, as many participants did not perceive themselves as being at risk of CVD. The majority of the participants in this study were found to have a moderate-to-high risk of CVD, and many had a negative perception of their risk. Health education and CVD prevention programs are required to curb the burden of CVD

    Influence of well-being and quality of work-life on quality of care among healthcare professionals in southwest, Nigeria

    The Nigerian healthcare industry is bedevilled with infrastructural dilapidations and a dysfunctional healthcare system. This study investigated the influence of healthcare professionals' well-being and quality of work-life (QoWL) on the quality of care (QoC) of patients in Nigeria. A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted at four tertiary healthcare institutions in southwest, Nigeria. Participants' demographic information, well-being, quality of life (QoL), QoWL, and QoC were obtained using four standardised questionnaires. Data were summarised using descriptive statistics. Inferential statistics included Chi-square, Pearson's correlation, independent samples t-test, confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation model. Medical practitioners (n = 609) and nurses (n = 570) constituted 74.6% of all the healthcare professionals with physiotherapists, pharmacists, and medical laboratory scientists constituting 25.4%. The mean (SD) participants' well-being = 71.65% (14.65), QoL = 61.8% (21.31), QoWL = 65.73% (10.52) and QoC = 70.14% (12.77). Participants' QoL had a significant negative correlation with QoC while well-being and quality of work-life had a significant positive correlation with QoC. We concluded that healthcare professionals' well-being and QoWL are important factors that influence the QoC rendered to patients. Healthcare policymakers in Nigeria should ensure improved work-related factors and the well-being of healthcare professionals to ensure good QoC for patients

    Ferulic acid interventions ameliorate NDEA-CCl4-induced hepatocellular carcinoma via Nrf2 and p53 upregulation and Akt/PKB-NF-κB-TNF-α pathway downregulation in male Wistar rats

    Hepatocellular carcinoma is a prevalent form of liver cancer that is life threatening. Many chemically synthesized anti-cancer drugs have various degrees of side effects. Hence, this study investigated the effect of FEAC interventions on NDEA-CCl4-induced HCAR in male Wistar rats. HCAR was induced by intraperitoneal administration of 200 mg/kg of NDEA and 0.5 mL/kg CCl4 (as a promoter of HCAR). Following the induction of HCAR, rats were treated differently with two different doses (25 and 50 mg/kg) of FEAC. HCAR induction was confirmed by the significant elevation of serum levels of ALT, AST, and α-FP. Also elevated significantly were liver levels of Akt/PKB, NF-κB, TNF-α, MDA, GSH, and activities of GST, SOD, and CAT, while levels of liver p53 and Nrf2 were significantly lowered compared with normal rats. Treatment interventions with both 25 and 50 mg/kg of FEAC against the DEN-CCl4-induced HCAR gave comparable effects, marked by a significant reduction in the levels of serum ALT, AST and α-FP, as well as liver levels of MDA, GSH, Akt/PKB, NF-κB, TNF-α, GST, SOD, and CAT, while levels of liver p53 and Nrf2 were significantly elevated compared with normal rats. Put together and judging by the outcomes of this study, FEAC being a potent antioxidant may also be potent against chemical-induced HCAR via upregulation of p53 and Nrf2, as well as downregulation of the Akt/PKB-NF-κB pathway in rats
