Lightweight magnesium-lithium alloys show promise
Evaluation tests show that magnesium-lithium alloys are lighter and more ductile than other magnesium alloys. They are being used for packaging, housings, containers, where light weight is more important than strength
Evidence for parallel elongated structures in the mesosphere
The physical cause of partial reflection from the mesosphere is of interest. Data are presented from an image-forming radar at Brighton, Colorado, that suggest that some of the radar scattering is caused by parallel elongated structures lying almost directly overhead. Possible physical sources for such structures include gravity waves and roll vortices
Radiative transfer in spherical shell atmospheres. 2: Asymmetric phase functions
The effects are investigated of sphericity on the radiation reflected from a planet with a homogeneous, conservative scattering atmosphere of optical thicknesses of 0.25 and 1.0. A Henyey-Greenstein phase function with asymmetry factors of 0.5 and 0.7 is considered. Significant differences were found when these results were compared with the plane-parallel calculations. Also large violations of the reciprocity theorem, which is only true for plane-parallel calculations, were noted. Results are presented for the radiance versus height distributions as a function of planetary phase angle
Hexagonal spiral growth in the absence of a substrate
Experiments on the formation of spiraling hexagons (350 - 1000 nm in width)
from a solution of nanoparticles are presented. Transmission electron
microscopy images of the reaction products of chemically synthesized cadmium
nanocrystals indicate that the birth of the hexagons proceeds without
assistance from static screw or edge dislocatons, that is, they spiral without
constraints provided by an underlying substrate. Instead, the apparent growth
mechanism relies on what we believe is a dynamical dislocation identified as a
dense aggregate of small nanocrystals that straddles the spiraling hexagon at
the crystal surface. This nanocrystal bundle, which we term the "feeder", also
appears to release nanocrystals into the spiral during the growth process.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Asymmetric Avalanches in the Condensate of a Zeeman-limited Superconductor
We report the non-equilibrium behavior of disordered superconducting Al films
in high Zeeman fields. We have measured the tunneling density of states of the
films through the first-order Zeeman critical field transition. We find that
films with sheet resistances of a few hundred ohms exhibit large avalanche-like
collapses of the condensate on the superheating branch of the critical field
hysteresis loop. In contrast, the transition back into the superconducting
phase (i.e., along the supercooling branch) is always continuous. The fact that
the condensate follows an unstable trajectory to the normal state suggests that
the order parameter in the hysteretic regime is not homogeneous.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to appear in PR
On the fourth root prescription for dynamical staggered fermions
With the aim of resolving theoretical issues associated with the fourth root
prescription for dynamical staggered fermions in Lattice QCD simulations, we
consider the problem of finding a viable lattice Dirac operator D such that
(det D_{staggered})^{1/4} = det D. Working in the flavour field representation
we show that in the free field case there is a simple and natural candidate D
satisfying this relation, and we show that it has acceptable locality behavior:
exponentially local with localisation range vanishing ~ (a/m)^{1/2} for lattice
spacing a -> 0. Prospects for the interacting case are also discussed, although

CONFIRMATORY SURVEY RESULTS FOR PORTIONS OF THE MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT FROM UNITS 1 AND 2 AT THE HUMBOLDT BAY POWER PLANT, EUREKA, CALIFORNIA
The Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) operated the Humboldt Bay Power Plant (HBPP) Unit 3 nuclear reactor near Eureka, California under Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) provisional license number DPR-7. HBPP Unit 3 achieved initial criticality in February 1963 and began commercial operations in August 1963. Unit 3 was a natural circulation boiling water reactor with a direct-cycle design. This design eliminated the need for heat transfer loops and large containment structures. Also, the pressure suppression containment design permitted below-ground construction. Stainless steel fuel claddings were used from startup until cladding failures resulted in plant system contamination—zircaloy-clad fuel was used exclusively starting in 1965 eliminating cladding-related contamination. A number of spills and gaseous releases were reported during operations resulting in a range of mitigative activities (see ESI 2008 for details)
