Variational Approach to Hydrogen Atom in Uniform Magnetic Field of Arbitrary Strength
Extending the Feynman-Kleinert variational approach, we calculate the
temperature-dependent effective classical potential governing the quantum
statistics of a hydrogen atom in a uniform magnetic at all temperatures. The
zero-temperature limit yields the binding energy of the electron which is quite
accurate for all magnetic field strengths and exhibits, in particular, the
correct logarithmic growth at large fields.Comment: Author Information under this

Large Deviations in the Superstable Weakly Imperfect Bose Gas
The superstable Weakly Imperfect Bose Gas {(WIBG)} was originally derived to
solve the inconsistency of the Bogoliubov theory of superfluidity. Its
grand-canonical thermodynamics was recently solved but not at {point of} the
{(first order)} phase transition. This paper proposes to close this gap by
using the large deviations formalism and in particular the analysis of the Kac
distribution function. It turns out that, as a function of the chemical
potential, the discontinuity of the Bose condensate density at the phase
transition {point} disappears as a function of the particle density. Indeed,
the Bose condensate continuously starts at the first critical particle density
and progressively grows but the free-energy per particle stays constant until
the second critical density is reached. At higher particle densities, the Bose
condensate density as well as the free-energy per particle both increase
{monotonously}
Smart parcelization and place diversity: reconciling real estate and urban design priorities
This paper examines the meaning and significance of place diversity and explores how its achievement may well depend on specific institutional relations between different actors in the real estate development process. It calls for master developers to engage in the âsmart parcelizationâ of large development sites through design-sensitive subdivision, reflected in conditions attached to plot sales or leases. By looking at practical examples, it explores how this concept could refashion speculative housebuilding in the UK. The paper highlights the potential and limitations of âsmart parcelizationâ, while emphasizing the need to link development and design considerations in future policy and research agendas
Single electron magneto-conductivity of a nondegenerate 2D electron system in a quantizing magnetic field
We study transport properties of a non-degenerate two-dimensional system of
non-interacting electrons in the presence of a quantizing magnetic field and a
short-range disorder potential. We show that the low-frequency
magnetoconductivity displays a strongly asymmetric peak at a nonzero frequency.
The shape of the peak is restored from the calculated 14 spectral moments, the
asymptotic form of its high-frequency tail, and the scaling behavior of the
conductivity for omega -> 0. We also calculate 10 spectral moments of the
cyclotron resonance absorption peak and restore the corresponding
(non-singular) frequency dependence using the continuous fraction expansion.
Both expansions converge rapidly with increasing number of included moments,
and give numerically accurate results throughout the region of interest. We
discuss the possibility of experimental observation of the predicted effects

Precision Pion-Proton Elastic Differential Cross Sections at Energies Spanning the Delta Resonance
A precision measurement of absolute pi+p and pi-p elastic differential cross
sections at incident pion laboratory kinetic energies from T_pi= 141.15 to
267.3 MeV is described. Data were obtained detecting the scattered pion and
recoil proton in coincidence at 12 laboratory pion angles from 55 to 155
degrees for pi+p, and six angles from 60 to 155 degrees for pi-p. Single arm
measurements were also obtained for pi+p energies up to 218.1 MeV, with the
scattered pi+ detected at six angles from 20 to 70 degrees. A flat-walled,
super-cooled liquid hydrogen target as well as solid CH2 targets were used. The
data are characterized by small uncertainties, ~1-2% statistical and ~1-1.5%
normalization. The reliability of the cross section results was ensured by
carrying out the measurements under a variety of experimental conditions to
identify and quantify the sources of instrumental uncertainty. Our lowest and
highest energy data are consistent with overlapping results from TRIUMF and
LAMPF. In general, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute SM95 partial wave
analysis solution describes our data well, but the older Karlsruhe-Helsinki PWA

Dangerous work: The gendered nature of bullying in the context of higher education
This paper discusses results from a research project which set out to investigate gender differences in the nature and experience of bullying within the higher education sector. Gender differences emerged in the form and perception of bullying as well as in target response. Results also indicate that, irrespective of gender, bullies can capture and subvert organizational structures and procedures (official hierarchies, mentoring systems, probationary reviews) to further their abuse of the target and to conceal aggressive intent. These outcomes are discussed in relation to gendered assumptions behind management practices and in relation to the masculinist ethic that underpins many higher education management initiatives. Overall, results indicate that bullying cannot be divorced from gender and that such behaviour needs to be seen in a gendered context
Testing and extending strategies for identifying genetic diseaseârelated encounters in pediatric patients
Purpose: To better understand health care utilization and develop decision support tools, methods for identifying patients with suspected genetic diseases (GDs) are needed. Previous studies had identified inpatient-relevant International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes that were possibly, probably, or definitely indicative of GDs. We assessed whether these codes identified GD-related inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department encounters among pediatric patients with suspected GDs from a previous study (the North Carolina Clinical Genomic Evaluation by Next-Generation Exome Sequencing [NCGENES] study). Methods: Using the electronic medical records of 140 pediatric patients from the NCGENES study, we characterized the presence of ICD codes representing possible, probable, or definite GD-related diagnoses across encounter types. In addition, we examined codes from encounters for which initially no GD-related codes had been found and determined whether these codes were indicative of a GD. Results: Among NCGENES patients with visits between 2014 and 2017, 92% of inpatient, 75% of emergency department, and 63% of outpatient encounters included â„1 GD-related code. Encounters with highly specific (ie, definite) GD codes had fewer low-specificity GD codes than encounters with only low-specificity GD codes. We identified an additional 32 ICD-9 and 56 ICD-10 codes possibly indicative of a GD. Conclusion: Code-based strategies can be refined to assess health care utilization among pediatric patients and may contribute to a systematic approach to identify patients with suspected GDs
A ballistic motion disrupted by quantum reflections
I study a Lindblad dynamics modeling a quantum test particle in a Dirac comb
that collides with particles from a background gas. The main result is a
homogenization theorem in an adiabatic limiting regime involving large initial
momentum for the test particle. Over the time interval considered, the particle
would exhibit essentially ballistic motion if either the singular periodic
potential or the kicks from the gas were removed. However, the particle behaves
diffusively when both sources of forcing are present. The conversion of the
motion from ballistic to diffusive is generated by occasional quantum
reflections that result when the test particle's momentum is driven through a
collision near to an element of the half-spaced reciprocal lattice of the Dirac

Panspermia, Past and Present: Astrophysical and Biophysical Conditions for the Dissemination of Life in Space
Astronomically, there are viable mechanisms for distributing organic material
throughout the Milky Way. Biologically, the destructive effects of ultraviolet
light and cosmic rays means that the majority of organisms arrive broken and
dead on a new world. The likelihood of conventional forms of panspermia must
therefore be considered low. However, the information content of dam-aged

Recreational and occupational physical activity in relation to prostate cancer aggressiveness: the North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project (PCaP)
Purpose: To examine associations between recreational and occupational physical activity and prostate cancer aggressiveness in a population-based, case-only, incident prostate cancer study. Methods: Data were analyzed from the cross-sectional North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project of African-American (n = 1,023) and European-American (n = 1,079) men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer (CaP). High-aggressive CaP was defined as Gleason sum â„ 8, or prostate-specific antigen > 20 ng/ml, or Gleason sum â„ 7 and clinical stage T3âT4. Metabolic equivalent tasks (MET) were estimated from self-reported recreational physical activity in the year prior to diagnosis assessed retrospectively via a validated questionnaire and from occupational physical activity based on job titles. Associations between physical activity variables and high-aggressive prostate cancer were estimated using logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusting for multiple confounders. Results: There was suggestive evidence that walking for 75â150 min/week for exercise is associated with lower odds of high-aggressive prostate cancer compared to no walking (OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.47â1.01). Physical activity at the current job was associated with 24% lower odds of high-aggressive prostate cancer (highest vs. lowest tertile OR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.56â1.04). However, total MET-h/week of recreational physical activity and accumulation of high-level physical activity at the longest-held job were not associated with high-aggressive prostate cancer. Results did not vary by race. Conclusions: The odds of high-aggressive prostate cancer were lower among men who walk for exercise and those engaged in occupations with high activity levels
