A ball trunnion capture latch
The Ball Trunnion Capture Latch described was developed and designed to restrain a spacecraft deployable appendage in three translational directions. The latch is capable of supporting an appendage during STS ascent and landing events and is capable of releasing and restowing an appendage distorted in three translational directions by thermal growth. The requirements, design, analyses, and tests conducted on a development unit of the latch are discussed
Vibration behavior of fuel-element vibration suppressors for the advanced power reactor
Preliminary shock and vibration tests were performed on vibration suppressors for the advanced power reactor for space application. These suppressors position the fuel pellets in a pin type fuel element. The test determined the effect of varying axial clearance on the behavior of the suppressors when subjected to shock and vibratory loading. The full-size suppressor was tested in a mockup model of fuel and clad which required scaling of test conditions. The test data were correlated with theoretical predictions for suppressor failure. Good agreement was obtained. The maximum difference with damping neglected was about 30 percent. Neglecting damping would result in a conservative design
Results on the nucleon spin structure
SMC performed an investigation of the spin structure of the nucleon by
measuring deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons off polarised protons
and deuterons. A summary of the results for spin structure functions and sum

Accelerated Overlap Fermions
Numerical evaluation of the overlap Dirac operator is difficult since it
contains the sign function of the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac
operator with a negative mass term. The problems are due to having
very small eigenvalues on the equilibrium background configurations generated
in current day Monte Carlo simulations. Since these are a consequence of the
lattice discretisation and do not occur in the continuum version of the
operator, we investigate in this paper to what extent the numerical evaluation
of the overlap can be accelerated by making the Wilson-Dirac operator more
continuum-like. Specifically, we study the effect of including the clover term
in the Wilson-Dirac operator and smearing the link variables in the irrelevant
terms. In doing so, we have obtained a factor of two speedup by moving from the
Wilson action to a FLIC (Fat Link Irrelevant Clover) action as the overlap

Coarsening of "clouds" and dynamic scaling in a far-from-equilibrium model system
A two-dimensional lattice gas of two species, driven in opposite directions
by an external force, undergoes a jamming transition if the filling fraction is
sufficiently high. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the growth of
these jams ("clouds"), as the system approaches a non-equilibrium steady state
from a disordered initial state. We monitor the dynamic structure factor
and find that the component exhibits dynamic scaling, of

Fully Coherent X-ray Pulses from a Regenerative Amplifier Free Electron Laser
We propose and analyze a novel regenerative amplifier free electron laser
(FEL) to produce fully coherent x-ray pulses. The method makes use of
narrow-bandwidth Bragg crystals to form an x-ray feedback loop around a
relatively short undulator. Self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) from the
leading electron bunch in a bunch train is spectrally filtered by the Bragg
reflectors and is brought back to the beginning of the undulator to interact
repeatedly with subsequent bunches in the bunch train. The FEL interaction with
these short bunches not only amplifies the radiation intensity but also
broadens its spectrum, allowing for effective transmission of the x-rays
outside the crystal bandwidth. The spectral brightness of these x-ray pulses is
about two to three orders of magnitude higher than that from a single-pass SASE

Miniature spectrally selective dosimeter
A miniature spectrally selective dosimeter capable of measuring selected bandwidths of radiation exposure on small mobile areas is described. This is achieved by the combination of photovoltaic detectors, electrochemical integrators (E-cells) and filters in a small compact case which can be easily attached in close proximity to and substantially parallel to the surface being measured. In one embodiment two photovoltaic detectors, two E-cells, and three filters are packaged in a small case with attaching means consisting of a safety pin. In another embodiment, two detectors, one E-cell, three filters are packaged in a small case with attaching means consisting of a clip to clip over a side piece of an eye glass frame
Linear Relationship Statistics in Diffusion Limited Aggregation
We show that various surface parameters in two-dimensional diffusion limited
aggregation (DLA) grow linearly with the number of particles. We find the ratio
of the average length of the perimeter and the accessible perimeter of a DLA
cluster together with its external perimeters to the cluster size, and define a
microscopic schematic procedure for attachment of an incident new particle to
the cluster. We measure the fractal dimension of the red sites (i.e., the sites
upon cutting each of them splits the cluster) equal to that of the DLA cluster.
It is also shown that the average number of the dead sites and the average
number of the red sites have linear relationships with the cluster size.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Transportation of animals and welfare
All forms of transport are potentially hazardous for animals, regardless of whether travel is between or within countries, or by road, rail, air or sea. However, experience shows that animals can be transported under suitable conditions without harm to their welfare.
The provision of suitable conditions and the establishment of a mutually satisfactory framework for regulating the international transport of animals depends on an understanding of welfare needs and of the biological basis for disease, stress and suffering. The author examines the biological aspects of this framework.
The capacity of animals to adapt to the different demands of different forms of transport varies with the species and physical state of animals being transported. Key practicalities are the preparation and selection of animals before transport, the provision of suitable environments, feed, water and rest during transport, and arrangements for recuperation after transport. Animals which are compromised by disease or injury must be excluded
