June versus March Calving for the Nebraska Sandhills: Economic Comparisons
Costs and returns of June and March calving systems were compared at four production phases. Financial costs of the June system were lowest, due primarily to lower costs of producing a weaned calf. Post-weaning financial and economic costs at each phase were nearly identical. Selling June-born steer calves at January weaning would double net returns compared to selling March-born steer calves at October weaning due to lower costs and higher market prices. Net returns for June-born steer calves retained beyond weaning are highest if calves are retained as yearlings and finished. Calves finished as calf-feds provided the highest net returns for the March calving system

Prevalence of iron deficiency in 62,685 women of seven race/ethnicity groups: The HEIRS Study.
BackgroundFew cross-sectional studies report iron deficiency (ID) prevalence in women of different race/ethnicity and ages in US or Canada.Materials and methodsWe evaluated screening observations on women who participated between 2001-2003 in a cross-sectional, primary care-based sample of adults ages ≥25 y whose observations were complete: race/ethnicity; age; transferrin saturation; serum ferritin; and HFE p.C282Y and p.H63D alleles. We defined ID using a stringent criterion: combined transferrin saturation <10% and serum ferritin <33.7 pmol/L (<15 μg/L). We compared ID prevalence in women of different race/ethnicity subgrouped by age and determined associations of p.C282Y and p.H63D to ID overall, and to ID in women ages 25-44 y with or without self-reported pregnancy.ResultsThese 62,685 women included 27,079 whites, 17,272 blacks, 8,566 Hispanics, 7,615 Asians, 449 Pacific Islanders, 441 Native Americans, and 1,263 participants of other race/ethnicity. Proportions of women with ID were higher in Hispanics and blacks than whites and Asians. Prevalence of ID was significantly greater in women ages 25-54 y of all race/ethnicity groups than women ages ≥55 y of corresponding race/ethnicity. In women ages ≥55 y, ID prevalence did not differ significantly across race/ethnicity. p.C282Y and p.H63D prevalence did not differ significantly in women with or without ID, regardless of race/ethnicity, age subgroup, or pregnancy.ConclusionsID prevalence was greater in Hispanic and black than white and Asian women ages 25-54 y. p.C282Y and p.H63D prevalence did not differ significantly in women with or without ID, regardless of race/ethnicity, age subgroup, or pregnancy
Inflation without Inflaton(s)
We propose a model for early universe cosmology without the need for
fundamental scalar fields. Cosmic acceleration and phenomenologically viable
reheating of the universe results from a series of energy transitions, where
during each transition vacuum energy is converted to thermal radiation. We show
that this `cascading universe' can lead to successful generation of adiabatic
density fluctuations and an observable gravity wave spectrum in some cases,
where in the simplest case it reproduces a spectrum similar to slow-roll models
of inflation. We also find the model provides a reasonable reheating
temperature after inflation ends. This type of model may also be relevant for

Strong Anisotropy in Liquid Water upon Librational Excitation using Terahertz Laser Fields
Tracking the excitation of water molecules in the homogeneous liquid is
challenging due to the ultrafast dissipation of rotational excitation energy
through the hydrogen-bonded network. Here we demonstrate strong transient
anisotropy of liquid water through librational excitation using single-color
pump-probe experiments at 12.3 THz. We deduce a third order response of chi^3
exceeding previously reported values in the optical range by three orders of
magnitude. Using a theory that replaces the nonlinear response with a material
response property amenable to molecular dynamics simulation, we show that the
rotationally damped motion of water molecules in the librational band is
resonantly driven at this frequency, which could explain the enhancement of the
anisotropy in the liquid by the external Terahertz field. By addition of salt
(MgSO4), the hydration water is instead dominated by the local electric field
of the ions, resulting in reduction of water molecules that can be dynamically
perturbed by THz pulses
Suppression of inhomogeneous broadening in rf spectroscopy of optically trapped atoms
We present a novel method for reducing the inhomogeneous frequency broadening
in the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of optically trapped atoms. This
reduction is achieved by the addition of a weak light field, spatially
mode-matched with the trapping field and whose frequency is tuned in-between
the two hyperfine levels. We experimentally demonstrate the new scheme with Rb
85 atoms, and report a 50-fold narrowing of the rf spectrum
Ultrastable CO2 Laser Trapping of Lithium Fermions
We demonstrate an ultrastable CO2 laser trap that provides tight confinement
of neutral atoms with negligible optical scattering and minimal laser-noise-
induced heating. Using this method, fermionic 6Li atoms are stored in a 0.4 mK
deep well with a 1/e trap lifetime of 300 sec, consistent with a background
pressure of 10^(-11) Torr. To our knowledge, this is the longest storage time
ever achieved with an all-optical trap, comparable to the best reported

Observation of radiation pressure exerted by evanescent waves
We report a direct observation of radiation pressure, exerted on cold
rubidium atoms while bouncing on an evanescent-wave atom mirror. We analyze the
radiation pressure by imaging the motion of the atoms after the bounce. The
number of absorbed photons is measured for laser detunings ranging from {190
MHz} to {1.4 GHz} and for angles from {0.9 mrad} to {24 mrad} above the
critical angle of total internal reflection. Depending on these settings, we
find velocity changes parallel with the mirror surface, ranging from 1 to {18
cm/s}. This corresponds to 2 to 31 photon recoils per atom. These results are
