    Mercury Levels in Marine and Estuarine Fishes of Florida 1989–2001. 2nd edition revised

    The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Florida Marine Research Institute (FWC-FMRI) has examined total mercury levels in muscle tissue from a variety of economically and ecologically important species as part of an ongoing study to better understand mercury contamination in marine fishes.The FWC-FMRI Mercury Program is one of the most comprehensive programs in the United States for monitoring mercury levels in marine and estuarine fishes. Because mercury, a toxic metallic element, has been shown to bioaccumulate in fish tissue, humans consuming fish can potentially consume significant levels of mercury.We examined the concentration of total mercury in 6,806 fish, representing 108 species from 40 families. Species represented all major trophic groups, from primary consumers to apex predators.The majority of individuals we examined contained low concentrations of mercury, but concentrations in individual fish varied greatly within and among species. Species with very low mean or median mercury concentrations tended to be planktivores, detritivores, species that feed on invertebrates, or species that feed on invertebrates and small fish prey.Apex predators typically had the highest mercury concentrations. In most species, mercury concentration increased as fish size increased. Sampling in Florida waters is continuing, and future research relating mercury levels to fish age, feeding ecology, and the trophic structure of Florida’s marine and estuarine ecosystems will help us better understand concentrations of this element in marine fishes.     Seasonal Occurrence of the White Shark, Carcharodon carcharias, in Waters off the Florida West Coast, with Notes on its Life History

    The white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is considered rare in the Gulf of Mexico; however, recent longline captures coupled with historical landings information suggest that the species occurs seasonally (winter-spring) within this region. We examined a total of seven adult and juvenile white sharks (185-472 em total length) captured in waters off the west coast of Florida. Commercial longline fisheries were monitored for white sharks during all months (1981-94), but this species was captured only from January to April. All white sharks were captured in continental shelf waters from 37 to 222 km off the west coast of Florida when sea surface temperatures ranged from 18.7° to 21.6°C. Depths at capture locations ranged from 20 to 164 m. Fishing gear typically used in Gulf of Mexico offshore fisheries may not be effective at capturing this species, and the apparent rarity of white sharks in this area may be, in part, a function of gear bias

    Mercury Concentrations in Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) from Northwest Florida

    We determined total mercury concentrations in dorsal muscle tissue of 112 spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) collected between 1993 and 1996 from Pensacola Bay and Choctawhatchee Bay, FL. We describe the relationships of length, weight, age, and sex to total mercury concentrations in this species. Fish ranged in size from 235 to 613 mm total length (TL), with a mean of 463 mm TL. The majority (84%) of the fish collected were female. The mean total mercury concentration detected in all fish combined was 0.40 ± 0.15 ppm, and in individual fish, total mercury concentration ranged from 0.11 to 0.88 ppm. We detected no significant differences in mercury concentrations between sexes. Total mercury concentration was positively correlated with fish TL and weight. However, no relationship was evident between total mercury concentration and age. Mercury concentrations detected in the majority of spotted seatrout examined from northwest Florida were below the State of Florida\u27s limited-consumption advisory of 0.5 ppm

    Multidirectional movements of sportfish species between an estuarine no-take zone and surrounding waters of the Indian River Lagoon, Florida

    We examined movement patterns of sportfish that were tagged in the northern Indian River Lagoon, Florida, between 1990 and 1999 to assess the degree of fish exchange between an estuarine no-take zone (NTZ) and surrounding waters. The tagged f ish were from seven species: red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus); black drum (Pogonias cromis); sheepshead (Archosargus probatocephalus); common snook (Centropomus undecimalis); spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus); bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas); and crevalle jack (Caranx hippos). A total of 403 tagged fish were recaptured during the study period, including 65 individuals that emigrated from the NTZ and 16 individuals that immigrated into the NTZ from surrounding waters of the lagoon. Migration distances between the original tagging location and the sites where emigrating fish were recaptured were from 0 to 150 km, and these migration distances appeared to be influenced by the proximity of the NTZ to spawning areas or other habitats that are important to specific life-history stages of individual species. Fish that immigrated into the NTZ moved distances ranging from approximately 10 to 75 km. Recapture rates for sportfish species that migrated across the NTZ boundary suggested that more individuals may move into the protected habitats than move out. These data demonstrated that although this estuarine no-take reserve can protect species from fishing, it may also serve to extract exploitable individuals from surrounding fisheries; therefore, if the no-take reserve does function to replenish surrounding fisheries, then increased egg production and larval export may be more important mechanisms of replenishment than the spillover of excess adults from the reserve into fishable areas

    It is possible that fundamental constants may not be constant at all. There is a generally accepted view that one can only talk about variations of dimensionless quantities, such as the fine structure constant αe≡e2/4πϵ0ℏc\alpha_{\rm e}\equiv e^2/4\pi\epsilon_0\hbar c. However, constraints on the strength of gravity tend to focus on G itself, which is problematic. We stress that G needs to be multiplied by the square of a mass, and hence, for example, one should be constraining αg≡Gmp2/ℏc\alpha_{\rm g}\equiv G m_{\rm p}^2/\hbar c, where mpm_{\rm p} is the proton mass. Failure to focus on such dimensionless quantities makes it difficult to interpret the physical dependence of constraints on the variation of G in many published studies. A thought experiment involving talking to observers in another universe about the values of physical constants may be useful for distinguishing what is genuinely measurable from what is merely part of our particular system of units.Comment: 6 pages, Gravity Research Foundation essa

This model includes the fluence, composition, energy spectra, and spatial and temporal variations of solar particles both within and beyong 1 AU. The ability to predict solar particle fluences was also discussed. Suggestions for specific studies designed to improve the basic model were also made

    Supersymetry on the Noncommutative Lattice

    Built upon the proposal of Kaplan et.al. [hep-lat/0206109], we construct noncommutative lattice gauge theory with manifest supersymmetry. We show that such theory is naturally implementable via orbifold conditions generalizing those used by Kaplan {\sl et.al.} We present the prescription in detail and illustrate it for noncommutative gauge theories latticized partially in two dimensions. We point out a deformation freedom in the defining theory by a complex-parameter, reminiscent of discrete torsion in string theory.     Towards the deconstruction of M-theory

    We argue that there is an equivalence of M-theory on T^3 \times A_{N-1} with a four-dimensional non-supersymmetric quiver gauge theory on the Higgs branch. The quiver theory in question has gauge group SU(N)^{N_4N_6N_8} and is considered in a strong coupling and large N_{4,6,8} limit. We provide field- and string-theoretical evidence for the equivalence making use of the deconstruction technique.
