Memory, space and time: Researching children's lives
This article discusses the research approach in 'Pathways through Childhood', a small qualitative study drawing on memories of childhood. The research explores how wider social arrangements and social change influence children's everyday lives. The article discusses the way that the concepts of social memory, space and time have been drawn on to access and analyse children's experiences, arguing that attention to the temporal and spatial complexity of childhood reveals less visible yet formative influences and connections. Children's everyday engagements involve connections between past and present time, between children, families, communities and nations, and between different places. Children carve out space and time for themselves from these complex relations. © The Author(s) 2010
Radio Galaxy Detection in the Visibility Domain
We explore a new Bayesian method of detecting galaxies from radio
interferometric data of the faint sky. Working in the Fourier domain, we fit a
single, parameterised galaxy model to simulated visibility data of star-forming
galaxies. The resulting multimodal posterior distribution is then sampled using
a multimodal nested sampling algorithm such as MultiNest. For each galaxy, we
construct parameter estimates for the position, flux, scale-length and
ellipticities from the posterior samples. We first test our approach on
simulated SKA1-MID visibility data of up to 100 galaxies in the field of view,
considering a typical weak lensing survey regime (SNR ) where 98% of
the input galaxies are detected with no spurious source detections. We then
explore the low SNR regime, finding our approach reliable in galaxy detection
and providing in particular high accuracy in positional estimates down to SNR
. The presented method does not require transformation of visibilities
to the image domain, and requires no prior knowledge of the number of galaxies
in the field of view, thus could become a useful tool for constructing accurate
radio galaxy catalogs in the future.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Quantum Hall effect in exfoliated graphene affected by charged impurities: metrological measurements
Metrological investigations of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) completed by
transport measurements at low magnetic field are carried out in
a-few--wide Hall bars made of monolayer (ML) or bilayer (BL)
exfoliated graphene transferred on substrate. From the
charge carrier density dependence of the conductivity and from the measurement
of the quantum corrections at low magnetic field, we deduce that transport
properties in these devices are mainly governed by the Coulomb interaction of
carriers with a large concentration of charged impurities. In the QHE regime,
at high magnetic field and low temperature (), the Hall
resistance is measured by comparison with a GaAs based quantum resistance
standard using a cryogenic current comparator. In the low dissipation limit, it
is found quantized within 5 parts in (one standard deviation, ) at the expected rational fractions of the von Klitzing constant,
respectively and in the ML and BL
devices. These results constitute the most accurate QHE quantization tests to
date in monolayer and bilayer exfoliated graphene. It turns out that a main
limitation to the quantization accuracy, which is found well above the
accuracy usually achieved in GaAs, is the low value of the QHE
breakdown current being no more than . The current dependence
of the longitudinal conductivity investigated in the BL Hall bar shows that
dissipation occurs through quasi-elastic inter-Landau level scattering,
assisted by large local electric fields. We propose that charged impurities are
responsible for an enhancement of such inter-Landau level transition rate and
cause small breakdown currents.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure
Should Grain Elevator Managers Adopt Integrated Pest Management?
Insect infestation during storage and processing causes millions of dollars of wheat damage annually in the United States. Insect infestation reduces wheat storing processing profit as well as consumer confidence in wheat food products. Meanwhile, increased concerns about insecticide use have increase interest in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. This research compares the costs of IPM and chemical-based approaches to insect control to determine why most elevator managers have not adopted IPM practices.Agribusiness,
Travelling Salesman Problem with a Center
We study a travelling salesman problem where the path is optimized with a
cost function that includes its length as well as a certain measure of
its distance from the geometrical center of the graph. Using simulated
annealing (SA) we show that such a problem has a transition point that
separates two phases differing in the scaling behaviour of and , in
efficiency of SA, and in the shape of minimal paths.Comment: 4 pages, minor changes, accepted in Phys.Rev.
Experimental and theoretical electronic structure of EuRh2As2
The Fermi surfaces (FS's) and band dispersions of EuRh2As2 have been
investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The results in
the high-temperature paramagnetic state are in good agreement with the full
potential linearized augmented plane wave calculations, especially in the
context of the shape of the two-dimensional FS's and band dispersion around the
Gamma (0,0) and X (pi,pi) points. Interesting changes in band folding are
predicted by the theoretical calculations below the magnetic transition
temperature Tn=47K. However, by comparing the FS's measured at 60K and 40K, we
did not observe any signature of this transition at the Fermi energy indicating
a very weak coupling of the electrons to the ordered magnetic moments or strong
fluctuations. Furthermore, the FS does not change across the temperature (~
25K) where changes are observed in the Hall coefficient. Notably, the Fermi
surface deviates drastically from the usual FS of the superconducting
iron-based AFe2As2 parent compounds, including the absence of nesting between
the Gamma and X FS pockets.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
