    Quantum nature of black holes

    I reconsider Hawking's analysis of the effects of gravitational collapse on quantum fields, taking into account interactions between the fields. The ultra-high energy vacuum fluctuations, which had been considered to be an awkward peripheral feature of the analysis, are shown to play a key role. By interactions, they can scatter particles to, or create pairs of particle at, ultra-high energies. The energies rapidly become so great that quantum gravity must play a dominant role.     Heat conduction and diffusion of hard disks in a narrow channel

    Using molecular dynamics we study heat conduction and diffusion of hard disks in one dimensional narrow channels. When collisions preserve momentum the heat conduction κ\kappa diverges with the number of disks NN as κ∼Nα\kappa\sim N^\alpha (α≈1/3)(\alpha \approx 1/3). Such a behaviour is seen both when the ordering of disks is fixed ('pen-case' model), and when they can exchange their positions. Momentum conservation results also in sound-wave effects that enhance diffusive behaviour and on an intermediate time scale (that diverges in the thermodynamic limit) normal diffusion takes place even in the 'pen-case' model. When collisions do not preserve momentum, κ\kappa remains finite and sound-wave effects are absent.Comment: 4 pages, accepted in Phys.Rev.

    A cost-benefit analysis of pathways to work for new and repeat incapacity benefits claimants

    This latest research forms part of a comprehensive independent evaluation of Pathways to Work. The report is based on a cost-benefit analysis conducted by a consortium of researchers from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and the Policy Studies Institute. It examines whether the financial benefits from Pathways are larger or smaller than its costs and the generalisability of some of the quantitative findings. The estimates of costs and benefits relate to new and repeat incapacity benefits claimants in the seven original Jobcentre Plus districts. The overall findings provide a favourable impression of the financial benefits of the Pathways to Work for new and repeat incapacity benefits claimants, for the Exchequer and hence, for society as a whole

    Molecular dynamics simulations of ballistic annihilation

    Using event-driven molecular dynamics we study one- and two-dimensional ballistic annihilation. We estimate exponents ξ\xi and γ\gamma that describe the long-time decay of the number of particles (n(t)∼t−ξn(t)\sim t^{-\xi}) and of their typical velocity (v(t)∼t−γv(t)\sim t^{-\gamma}). To a good accuracy our results confirm the scaling relation ξ+γ=1\xi + \gamma =1. In the two-dimensional case our results are in a good agreement with those obtained from the Boltzmann kinetic theory.Comment: 4 pages; some changes; Physical Review E (in press

    Symmetries and exact solutions of the BPS Skyrme model

    The BPS Skyrme model is a specific subclass of Skyrme-type field theories which possesses both a BPS bound and infinitely many soliton solutions (skyrmions) saturating that bound, a property that makes the model a very convenient first approximation to the study of some properties of nuclei and hadrons. A related property, the existence of a large group of symmetry transformations, allows for solutions of rather general shapes, among which some of them will be relevant to the description of physical nuclei. We study here the classical symmetries of the BPS Skyrme model, applying them to construct soliton solutions with some prescribed shapes, what constitutes a further important step for the reliable application of the model to strong interaction physics.Comment: Latex, 17 page

    Exchange Rate Regimes and Revenue Performance in Sub-Saharan Africa

    It has been argued that the institutions of the CFA Franc zone may have reduced inflation but that they also induced misalignment of the real exchange rate and that this is the explanation for their dismal revenue performance. This paper uses a panel of 22 countries in sub-Saharan Africa to estimate revenue performance over the period from 1980 to 1996. It finds that the poor cumulative relative revenue performance of the franc zone countries is mainly attributable to differences in environmental and structural factors, and to their different responses to changes in the equilibrium real exchange rate, but that the misalignment of the real exchange rate also played a part.

    Integrability in Theories with Local U(1) Gauge Symmetry

    Using a recently developed method, based on a generalization of the zero curvature representation of Zakharov and Shabat, we study the integrability structure in the Abelian Higgs model. It is shown that the model contains integrable sectors, where integrability is understood as the existence of infinitely many conserved currents. In particular, a gauge invariant description of the weak and strong integrable sectors is provided. The pertinent integrability conditions are given by a U(1) generalization of the standard strong and weak constraints for models with two dimensional target space. The Bogomolny sector is discussed, as well, and we find that each Bogomolny configuration supports infinitely many conserved currents. Finally, other models with U(1) gauge symmetry are investigated.Comment: corrected typos, version accepted in J. Phys.
