Experimental investigation of the softening-stiffening response of tensegrity prisms under compressive loading

The present paper is concerned with the formulation of new assembly methods of bi-material tensegrity prisms, and the experimental characterization of the compressive response of such structures. The presented assembly techniques are easy to implement, including a string-first approach in the case of ordinary tensegrity prisms, and a base-first approach in the case of systems equipped with rigid bases. The experimental section shows that the compressive response of tensegrity prisms switches from stiffening to softening under large displacements, in dependence on the current values of suitable geometric and prestress variables. Future research lines regarding the mechanical modeling of tensegrity prisms and their use as building blocks of nonlinear periodic lattices and acoustic metamaterials are discussed

    Uniform determinantal representations

The problem of expressing a specific polynomial as the determinant of a square matrix of affine-linear forms arises from algebraic geometry, optimisation, complexity theory, and scientific computing. Motivated by recent developments in this last area, we introduce the notion of a uniform determinantal representation, not of a single polynomial but rather of all polynomials in a given number of variables and of a given maximal degree. We derive a lower bound on the size of the matrix, and present a construction achieving that lower bound up to a constant factor as the number of variables is fixed and the degree grows. This construction marks an improvement upon a recent construction due to Plestenjak-Hochstenbach, and we investigate the performance of new representations in their root-finding technique for bivariate systems. Furthermore, we relate uniform determinantal representations to vector spaces of singular matrices, and we conclude with a number of future research directions.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures, 4 table

The practice boundaries of advanced practice nurses: an economic and legal analysis

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine the causes and effects of State regulation that determines the extent of professional independence of advanced practice nurses (APNs). We analyze determinants of these regulations in panel data across States. We find that in States where APNs have acquired a substantial amount of professional independence, the earnings of APNs are substantially lower, and those of physicians' assistants are substantially higher, than in other States. These results are striking since physicians' assistants are in direct competition with APNs; the only real operational difference between these groups is that physicians' assistants are salaried employees who must work under the supervision of a physician. The implication is that physicians have responded to an increase in professional independence of APNs by hiring fewer APNs and more physicians' assistants.

Education as a Panacea to Women Active Participation in Nigerian Politics

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to investigate into the acute and perennial under-representation of women in Nigerian Politics. In Nigeria women make up half of the population and they have been known to have contributed in no small measure to the development and sustenance of the society yet they are hardly there in the political scene. We have tried in this paper to establish the ethical and theoretical basis for women active participation in Nigerian politics which among other things border on their personhood and the concept of equality, justice and human rights. The African and indeed Nigerian value system explored in this paper point to the complementarity that exists between both sexes for social harmony and cohesion. This study shows that the major militating factors against women participation in politics include; lack of democratic culture among Nigerian populace, and the general negative mind-set about the nature and ability of women. This paper therefore, proffered strategies for addressing the issue of empowering women politically

The History And Mystery Of Chromatin

UNE research professors Ada and Don Olins present some of their published and unpublished data on chromatin. The name “Chromatin” was given by W. Flemming (~1880) to the nuclear substance that stains strongly in a light microscope. During the 1940’s to 60’s, it became clear that chromatin is a complex of (anionic) double-stranded DNA with an equal mass of highly basic histone proteins. Following the success of fiber x-ray diffraction in deciphering helical macromolecular structures (e.g., the single peptide alpha-helix, DNA double helix, collagen triple helix, etc.), it became “reasonable” to postulate that chromatin is a helix of nucleohistone. Electron microscopic evidence appeared to support this concept. In 1973-74 the chromatin field witnessed a significant paradigm shift, when our electron micrographs and parallel biochemical data (from other labs) demonstrated that the chromatin polymer is a “string-of-beads”, which were named “nucleosomes”. The “core” nucleosome contains ~160 bp of DNA, wrapped around an inner spool of 8 histones (two each of histones H3, H4, H2A and H2B) related by a dyad axis. Following the discovery of nucleosomes, there was again a profusion of chromatin helical models (e.g., “30 nm fibers”). Unfortunately, there is very little support for such higher-order structures in vivo. Since the discovery of the nucleosome, we have focused on a number of questions related to in situ higher-order chromatin structure: What controls the shape of the interphase nucleus? What are the properties of the chromatin “surface”, adjacent to the nuclear envelope? What happens to chromatin during hyperosmotic dehydration of the live cell?https://dune.une.edu/pharmsci_facpres/1002/thumbnail.jp

Cytoskeletal influences on nuclear shape in granulocytic HL-60 cells

BACKGROUND: During granulopoiesis in the bone marrow, the nucleus differentiates from ovoid to lobulated shape. Addition of retinoic acid (RA) to leukemic HL-60 cells induces development of lobulated nuclei, furnishing a convenient model system for nuclear differentiation during granulopoiesis. Previous studies from our laboratory have implicated nuclear envelope composition as playing important roles in nuclear shape changes. Specifically noted were: 1) a paucity of lamins A/C and B1 in the undifferentiated and RA treated cell forms; 2) an elevation of lamin B receptor (LBR) during induced granulopoiesis. RESULTS: The present study demonstrates that perturbation of cytoskeletal elements influences nuclear differentiation of HL-60 cells. Because of cytotoxicity from prolonged exposure to cytoskeleton-modifying drugs, most studies were performed with a Bcl-2 overexpressing HL-60 subline. We have found that: 1) nocodazole prevents RA induction of lobulation; 2) taxol induces lobulation and micronuclear formation, even in the absence of RA; 3) cytochalasin D does not inhibit RA induced nuclear lobulation, and prolonged exposure induces nuclear shape changes in the absence of RA. CONCLUSIONS: The present results, in the context of earlier data and models, suggest a mechanism for granulocytic nuclear lobulation. Our current hypothesis is that the nuclear shape change involves factors that increase the flexibility of the nuclear envelope (reduced lamin content), augment connections to the underlying heterochromatin (increased levels of LBR) and promote distortions imposed by the cytoskeleton (microtubule motors creating tension in the nuclear envelope)

Emotional Intelligence and Managerial Effectiveness of Principals in Ogoja Educational Zone of Cross River State, Nigeria: Implication for Counseling

    Get PDF
Emotional intelligence as a predictor of principals’ managerial effectiveness in secondary schools in Ogoja Educational Zone of Cross River State was investigated. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Simple random sampling was used to select 20 principals and 160 teachers and administered Emotional intelligence test and teachers’ questionnaire. Pearson Correlation analysis was used at 0.05 significance level. There was a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and managerial effectiveness of principals. Principals with high emotional intelligence scored higher than their counterparts with low emotional intelligence. It was recommended that regular workshops and seminars should be organized to develop or improve the level of emotional intelligence of principals.
