The Bishop-Phelps-Bollob\'{a}s property for operators on C(K)C(K)

We provide a version for operators of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollob\'{a}s Theorem when the domain space is the complex space C0(L)C_0(L). In fact we prove that the pair (C0(L),Y)(C_0(L), Y) satisfies the Bishop-Phelps-Bollob\'{a}s property for operators for every Hausdorff locally compact space LL and any C\mathbb{C}-uniformly convex space. As a consequence, this holds for Y=Lp(μ)Y= L_p (\mu) (1p<1 \le p < \infty ).Comment: 13 page

La Llorona, Picante Pero Sabroso: The Mexican Horror Legend as a Story of Survival and a Reclamation of the Monster

For centuries, the relationship between Mexico and its infatuation with scary stories has been profoundly complex, but why? Perhaps it is the easiest way to communicate a Mexican culture, although proud and resilient, riddled with haunting narratives. For myself personally, the Mexican horror narrative La Llorona has served as a lens for conversation and communication that is unique and important. In this thesis, I explore how Mexicans and Mexican Americans alike use the legend of La Llorona as a unique form of communication through personifying what truly haunts us. From using the narrative as a tool for entertainment, cautionary tales, historical knowledge, and even to unintentionally pass on intergenerational trauma, this Latinx horror legend serves a variety of purposes for each individual that tells it. My central research questions included the following: how does the legend of La Llorona manifest in emotionally diverse ways among the people and families I interviewed; in what ways is La Llorona used as a tool of communication within the Mexican and Mexican American households of my interviewees; and what are the commentaries on the legend of La Llorona that are hidden in the subtext? My research consisted of interviews and conversations with Mexicans and Mexican Americans who have had a personal experience and connection with the legend of La Llorona. The informants and their words are discussed in three chapters: Chapter One addresses children ages thirteen to fifteen, Chapter Two describes young adults ages twenty-five and twenty-nine, and Chapter Three focuses on older adults. The results of this research include bringing a culture\u27s narratives of hurt and healing to light through the reclamation of “the monster.” La Llorona has proven that she is so much more than the monster that the Western world makes her out to be. Through explorations of gender, emotionality, machismo, marianismo, and the dichotomy of human and monster, my research demonstrates how this legend is a form of subtextual communication for the Mexican and Mexican Americans I interviewed

Implementation of a multi-scale predictive system of the degradation of the urban front in Brno, Czech Republic

The unavoidable deterioration of the built urban front in the cities has been increasingly generating a huge environmental impact. From this perspective, it is necessary to develop systematized methods that facilitate strategic maintenance of the facades and which study the variables that can potentially play a significant role in the damage occurrence. Therefore it is convenient to implement analytical methodologies to the decision making process on conservation and sustainability of the built urban front with a macro-scale approach. The BRAIN platform (Building Research Analysis and Information Network) is a Multi-scale Predictive System of the Degradation of the Urban Front. By means of periodic inspections, BRAIN allows analyses of damage progression and prediction of the future affectation, based on survival/reliability statistical models. The aim of this paper is to introduce a preliminary study on the implementation of the Urban Laboratory in the city of Brno, Czech Republic. Results of this primary approach have been displayed and discussed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Environmental topology and water availability modulates the catalytic activity of beta-Galactosidase entrapped in a nanosporous silicate matrix

In the present work we studied the catalytic activity of E. coli β-Gal confined in a nanoporous silicate matrix (Eβ-Gal) at different times after the beginning of the sol-gel polymerization process. Enzyme kinetic experiments with two substrates (ONPG and PNPG) that differed in the rate-limiting steps of the reaction mechanism for their β-Gal-catalyzed hydrolysis, measurements of transverse relaxation times (T2) of water protons through 1H-NMR, and scanning electron microscopy analysis of the gel nanostructure, were performed. In conjunction, results provided evidence that water availability is crucial for the modulation observed in the catalytic activity of β-Gal as long as water participate in the rate limiting step of the reaction (only with ONPG). In this case, a biphasic rate vs. substrate concentration was obtained exhibiting one phase with catalytic rate constant (kcA), similar to that observed in solution, and another phase with a higher and aging-dependent catalytic rate constant (kcB). More structured water populations (lower T2) correlates with higher catalytic rate constants (kcB). The T2-kcB negative correlation observed along the aging of gels within the 15-days period assayed reinforces the coupling between water structure and the hydrolysis catalysis inside gels.Fil: Burgos, Martha Ines.

    Get PDF

Words make people think, ... but pictures make people feel: The effect negative vs. positive images on charitable behavior

We ran an experiment where the subjects initially played a four-round dictator game, after which each subject was shown either a set of positive images or a set of negative images. Finally the subjects played another four-round dictator game.
The effect of the sign of images shown is clear on the players’ behaviors: positive images have moderate effects on charitable behavior while negative images dramatically increase charity.
We could therefore infer from our experimental results that showing negative images of the Haitian and Chilean catastrophes to the international public would have significant positive impacts on international donations to the victims and the rebuilding programs in both countries
