Results of this study suggest that computer-enhanced technology may provide a bridge for more surgeons to incorporate laparoscopic surgery in the management of complex cases

Permanence, Temporality and the Rhythms of Life : Exploring Significance of the Village Arena in Igbo Culture

    Get PDF
The village arena (or ‘square’ or ‘Otobo’ in Nsukka Igbo) is at the physical and socio-cultural centre of Igbo life, in southeast Nigeria. It is a space where intangible Igbo cultural heritage is played out, and also serves as a virtual museum where heritage materials are kept. The arena performs its roles in two very different ways: as a sacred space hosting initiation rites and religious rituals; and as a profane space for meetings and ceremonies. Either way, these uses see the arena transition between permanency and temporality, following routines and rhythms which themselves give the practices meaning and significance, and contribute to their inscription on the landscape. This paper explores the complexities associated with these village arenas with a particular focus on their socio-cultural, political, economic and religious functions through time, as well as the way those complexities are manifest in material cultures that serve to characterize the village arena

Experiments were designed to yield information pertaining to the solubility of copper, and the distribution of cobalt and nickel in si1ica-unsaturated iron slags. The experiments were carried out in a closed system under controlled partial pressures of oxygen 10 10 to 10_S atmosphere, over a temperature range of 1473 to 1573K, and at a Fe/Si02 ratio of 1.49. The equilibrium reaction considered was: Me (1) + 1/x 0 2 (g) = MeOY (1). The results show that the alumina content of the slag decreases with increasing oxygen partial pressure, but decreases with increasing temperature. Alumina increases activity coefficients of copper, cobalt and nickel oxides. The presence of lime in Cu-Co and Cu-Ni systems increases the distribution coefficient of cobalt but decreases the distribution coefficient of nickel. Lime decreases the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide but increases the activity coefficient of nickel oxide

Biyi Bandele’s Theatre of the Afropolitan Absurd

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Palgrave via the DOI in this record. This chapter initiates an overdue discussion of Bandele’s early plays Marching for Fausa (Royal Court, 1993), Two Horsemen (The Gate, 1994), and Resurrections in the Season of the Longest Drought (Cochrane, 1994). It examines these plays through two distinct but related lenses. For classification purposes, the plays are situated within the tradition of the African Absurd. They are then analysed through the transnational concept of Afropolitanism. Although the plays predate the term Afropolitan, this chapter demonstrates how the concept’s articulation of globalised African identities and cultures provides an ideal framework through which to comprehend the complex conditions of their production and the political and cultural issues with which they engage
