This research aims to evaluate the introduction of the Service Learning (SL) component in three university courses in Islamic University of Gaza. The study focused on the following questions: 1) What are the steps followed to implement teaching that is based on service learning from the perspective of involved faculty members? 2) What are the advantages and the obstacles associate with the implementation of service learning? 3) To what extent was student involvement in this experience beneficial to students' academic, personal, societal and professional domains from their perspectives? The study sample consisted of 101 students, of whom -88- at the bachelor's level. It was distributed as follows: Department of Architecture, Urban Flaming course (16 students), and the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Microbiology course (72 students). The MA students were from the Department of Educational Administration: Educational Management course. Researchers relied on a questionnaire completed by the students, in addition to the interviews conducted with the three (3) faculty members involved in those courses. Results of the analysis showed that teaching based on service learning was successful and has achieved its objectives in various forms. Results exceeded expectations and were ahead of the targets set by the university. It appears through the university has benefited from the experience in a direct way in terms of strengthening the reputation, and in making a positive difference in the lives of the beneficiaries

Zoonotic parasitic diseases transmitted from animals to human is of concern on the health of the public. The present study was carried out to examine the occurrence of T. gondii and other zoonotic enteric parasites including protozoa and helminthes of stray cats in Khanyounis, Gaza strip, Palestine. A cross-sectional study was performed on 93 stray cats which trapped from Khanyounis governorate, and dissected; the observed parasites (cestodes, nematodes and treamatodes) were isolated and processed according parasitology standards methods. Faecal sample was examined by wet mount and flotation for T. gondii detection and other protozoa. The present study included 44 males cat (47.3%) and 49 females (52.7%). The general prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection was found to be 90 (96.8%). T. gondii was found to be 5 (5.4%), nematodes 41 (44.1%), cestodes 85 (91.4%) and trematodes 23 (24.7%). The most common round worms were Toxocara cati, Toxocara leonina, while cestodes Diplopylidium genettae, Joyeuiella kofend and other unknown. It is concluded that zoonotic parasitic diseases especially toxoplasmosis present among stray cats in Khanyounis, Gaza Strip. It is recommended that awareness and education should takes place towards zoonotic diseases among Palestinian society especially that stray cats and house cats are so prevalent in Gaza strip

Oral contraceptives, sociocultural beliefs and psychiatric symptoms

The occurence of psychiatric symptoms as detected by the General Health Questionnaire was examined in three groups of Moslem women. Those who used oral contraceptives were compared to those who used local contraceptives and those using no contraceptives in relation to their beliefs about prohibition of contraception by the Islamic religious code and/or about possible health hazards of contraception. Those who held one or both sets of adverse beliefs had significantly more symptoms. However the fact that women on oral contraceptives had most symptoms has been attributed to the repetitive nature of pill-taking acting as a reminder of the presumed adversity and/or to the biochemical effects of oral contraceptives.contraception Islamic religion health hazards psychiatric symptoms

Single-qubit gates in frequency-crowded transmon systems

Recent experimental work on superconducting transmon qubits in three-dimensional (3D) cavities shows that their coherence times are increased by an order of magnitude compared to their two-dimensional cavity counterparts. However, to take advantage of these coherence times while scaling up the number of qubits it is advantageous to address individual qubits which are all coupled to the same 3D cavity fields. The challenge in controlling this system comes from spectral crowding, where the leakage transition of qubits is close to computational transitions in other qubits. Here, it is shown that fast pulses are possible which address single qubits using two-quadrature control of the pulse envelope, while the derivative removal by adiabatic gate method of Motzoi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 110501 (2009)] alone only gives marginal improvements over the conventional Gaussian pulse shape. On the other hand, a first-order result using the Magnus expansion gives a fast analytical pulse shape which gives a high-fidelity gate for a specific gate time, up to a phase factor on the second qubit. Further numerical analysis corroborates these results and yields to even faster gates, showing that leakage-state anharmonicity does not provide a fundamental quantum speed limit.QN/Quantum NanoscienceApplied Science
