Purity of the Ideal of Continuous Functions with Compact Support

Get PDF
<P>Let C(X) be the ring of all continuous real valued functions defined on a completely regular T1-space. Let CK(X) be the ideal of functions with compact support. Purity of CK(X) is studied and characterized through the subspace XL, the set of all points in X with compact neighborhoods (nbhd). It is proved that CK(X) is pure if and only if XL=∪f∈CK supp f. if CK(X) and CK(Y) are pure ideals, then CK(X) is isomorphic to CK(Y) if and only if XL is homeomorphic to YL. It is proved that CK(X) is pure and XL is basically disconnected if and only if for every f ∈CK(X), the ideal (f ) is a projective C(X)-module. Finally it is proved that if CK(X) is pure, then XL is an F'-space if and only if every principal ideal of CK(X) is a flat C(X)-module. Concrete examples exemplifying the concepts studied are given.</p

FAQchat as in Information Retrieval system

Get PDF
A chatbot is a conversational agent that interacts with users through natural languages. In this paper, we describe a new way to access information using a chatbot. The FAQ in the School of Computing at the University of Leeds has been used to retrain the ALICE chatbot system, producing FAQchat. The results returned from FAQchat are similar to ones generated by search engines such as Google. For evaluation, a comparison was made between FAQchat and Google. The main objective is to demonstrate that FAQchat is a viable alternative to Google and it can be used as a tool to access FAQ databases

Remittances and Economic Growth: Empirical Evidence from Bangladesh India and Sri Lanka

Get PDF
In many developing countries, remittance payments from migrant workers are increasingly becoming a significant source of export income. This paper investigates the causal link between remittances and economic growth in three countries, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, by employing the Granger causality test under a VAR framework (Granger 1988). Using time series data over a 25 year period, we found that growth in remittances does lead to economic growth in Bangladesh. In India, there seems to be no causal relationship between growth in remittances and economic growth; but in Sri Lanka, a two-way directional causality is found; namely economic growth influences growth in remittences and vice-versa. The paper also discusses a number of policy issues arising from the results of the analysis in relation to remittances in association with liberalisation of financial institutions, gender issues, regulation and enforcement, investment and savings schemes, and promotion and education.

A New Class of Life Distribution based on Laplace Transform and It’s Applications

Get PDF
Based on the approach of Laplace transform, a new class of life distributions called used better than aged in increasing concave denoted by (UBAC(2)L) is introduced. The implication of our proposed class of life distribution with other classes is given. Some properties of UBAC(2)L class of life distribution are studied. By using the goodness of fit methodology, a new test statistic is proposed for testing exponentiality versus UBAC(2)L class of life distribution. Critical values of our test are calculated for complete and censored data. The power of the test and pitman’s asymptotic efficiency (PAE) for some commonly used distributions in reliability are calculated. Finally, a set of real data is used as an example to elucidate the use of the proposed test statistic for practical reliability analysis

Renal Replacement Therapy Resources in Africa

Background: Africa is the world’s second-largest and most-populous continent. It is also the world’s poorest inhabited continent. Regarding chronic kidney disease (CKD), there are no reliable statistics in most African countries. However, there is a general impression that it is at least three to four times more frequent than in more developed countries Methods: a survey on renal replacement therapy in Africa was conducted in the context of the African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN) Congress 2007. A questionnaire was sent to leading African nephrologists, and data were also collected from the main dialysis supply companies and by personal communication. Data have been obtained from 32 out of 54 countries, representing 89% of the total population. Results: There are no reliable statistics regarding CKD in most African countries. The total number of nephrologists in the continent is 1154 (1-4 pmp). The total number of patients on hemodialysis (HD) is just over 60000 patients

Production of raw starch degrading amylase by a mixed culture of Aspergillus niger and Saccharomyces cerevisae grown on sorghum pomace as nutrient source was investigated. Effect of mineral nutrient supplementation of sorghum pomace on raw starch degrading amylase activity was also determined. Sorghum pomace medium significantly (

Spectroscopic investigations of pentobarbital interaction with human serum albumin

The interaction between pentobarbital and human serum albumin has been investigated. The basic binding interaction was studied by UV-absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. From spectral analysis pentobarbital showed a strong ability to quench the intrinsic fluorescence of HSA through a static quenching procedure. The binding constant (k) is estimated at 1.812 104 M 1 at 293 K. FT-IR spectroscopy with Fourier self-deconvolution technique was used to determine the protein secondary structure and drug binding mechanisms. The observed spectral changes of HSA–pentobarbital complex indicate a larger intensity decrease in the absorption band of a-helix relative to that of b-sheets. This variation in intensity is related indirectly to the formation of H-bonding in the complex molecules, which accounts for the different intrinsic propensities of a-helix and b-sheets.This work is supported by the German Research Foundation DFG Grant No. DR228/24-2
