Etiologies and 12-month mortality in patients with isolated involuntary weight loss at a rapid diagnostic unit
Numerous studies on involuntary weight loss (IWL) have been published since the 1980s, although most of them have included small samples of patients with specific symptoms. The aim of the present study was to determine the causes, demographic and clinical characteristics and mortality at 12 months in patients attended at a rapid diagnostic unit (RDU) for isolated IWL. A single-center retrospective observational study including all patients presenting to the RDU for isolated IWL between 2005 and 2013. The following data were recorded: demographic and clinical variables, results of complementary tests (blood tests, x-rays, computed tomography scan and digestive endoscopy), main diagnosis and vital status at 12 months. Seven hundred and ninety-one patients met the criteria for IWL. Mean age was 67.9 years (SD 4.7), 50.4% were male and mean weight loss was 8.3 kg (SD 4.7). The cause for IWL was malignant disease in 23.6% of patients, non-malignant organic disease in 44.5%, psychiatric disorder in 29.0% and unknown in 3.2%. Overall mortality at 12 months was 18.6% (95%CI: 16.1-21.6). The mortality rate was highest in the group with malignancy (61.1%; 95%CI: 54.2-68.2). Almost a quarter of all patients attended at the RDU for IWL were diagnosed with cancer. Mortality at 12 months was higher in this group than in the other three. Malignancy should therefore be ruled out during the first visit for patients attended for IWL

Recerca amb animals. Legislació europea, nacional i catalana
Treball presentat a l'assignatura d'Ètica i Legislació.

A global database of ant species abundances
What forces structure ecological assemblages? A key limitation to general insights about assemblage structure is the availability of data that are collected at a small spatial grain (local assemblages) and a large spatial extent (global coverage). Here, we present published and unpublished data from 51, 388 ant abundance and occurrence records of more than 2,693 species and 7,953 morphospecies from local assemblages collected at 4,212 locations around the world. Ants were selected because they are diverse and abundant globally, comprise a large fraction of animal biomass in most terrestrial communities, and are key contributors to a range of ecosystem functions. Data were collected between 1949 and 2014, and include, for each geo-referenced sampling site, both the identity of the ants collected and details of sampling design, habitat type, and degree of disturbance. The aim of compiling this data set was to provide comprehensive species abundance data in order to test relationships between assemblage structure and environmental and biogeographic factors. Data were collected using a variety of standardized methods, such as pitfall and Winkler traps, and will be valuable for studies investigating large-scale forces structuring local assemblages. Understanding such relationships is particularly critical under current rates of global change. We encourage authors holding additional data on systematically collected ant assemblages, especially those in dry and cold, and remote areas, to contact us and contribute their data to this growing data set
Early-Career Coordinated Distributed Experiments: Empowerment Through Collaboration
Este artÃculo contiene 7 páginas, 1 tabla, 3 figuras.Coordinated distributed experiments (CDEs) enable the study of large-scale ecological
patterns in geographically dispersed areas, while simultaneously providing broad
academic and personal benefits for the participants. However, the effective involvement
of early-career researchers (ECRs) presents major challenges. Here, we analyze the
benefits and challenges of the first CDE exclusively led and conducted by ECRs (i.e.
ECR-CDE), which sets a baseline for similar CDEs, and we provide recommendations
for successful CDE execution. ECR-CDEs achieve most of the outcomes identified in
conventional CDEs as well as extensive benefits for the young cohort of researchers,
including: (i) receiving scientific credit, (ii) peer-training in new concepts and methods, (iii)
developing leadership and communication skills, (iv) promoting a peer network among
ECRs, and (v) building on individual engagement and independence. We also discuss
the challenges of ECR-CDEs, which are mainly derived from the lack of independence
and instability of the participants, and we suggest mechanisms to address them, such
as resource re-allocation and communication strategies. We conclude that ECR-CDEs
can be a relevant tool to empower ECRs across disciplines by fostering their training,
networking and personal well-being.The authors were supported by the following founding: NC
