Despite the importance of sustained and continued use of healthcare information systems to reap their benefits of cost reductions and quality improvements, research on continuance use of these systems is limited. In this paper, we study physicians’ continuance to use a pain management clinical decision support system by developing a theoretical model that integrates Delone and McLean IS success model with physicians’ professional identity constructs, an integration that addresses the gap of separating information systems constructs from physicians’ idiosyncrasies constructs in extant literature. We conduct our study through a mixed methods longitudinal design that addresses our research questions. This study enhances our understanding of factors influencing physicians’ continuance behavior and extends current literature on healthcare information systems use

The Role of Mobile Technology in Enhancing the Use of Personal Health

Healthcare industry is essential for the wellbeing of society members, however this industry is characterized by high cost and by plagued by serious medical errors. Personal health records (PHR) can play an important role in solving healthcare problems by enhancing patients’ involvement in their treatment, and improving patient-provider communication. Despite the potential importance of PHR systems, they suffer from low adoption rate because of several factors such as digital divide and lack of training. In this paper we propose that mobile PHR systems (MPHR) can aid in overcoming barriers to adopt PHR. We present a theoretical model based on theory of planned behavior and innovation diffusion model that attempts to explain the relationship between mobile technology and MPHR. This model helps in understanding the relationship between mobile technology and PHR, and provide insight to how to overcome PHR adoption barriers

Knowledge-Based Clinical Decision Support Systems Continuance: An Integration of Physicians’ Identity and System Attributes

Despite the importance of sustained use of healthcare information systems, research on the continuous use of these systems is scanty, especially for clinical decision support systems. Moreover, there is an apparent gap between information systems and healthcare research approaches in studying use. We address these gaps by creating a comprehensive model based on the composite attitude-behavior model that integrates system related constructs with physicians’ professional identity constructs to explain and model physicians’ continuous use of a pain management clinical decision support system theoretically. Using a mixed methods longitudinal study design, we investigate factors influencing continuous use of automated clinical guidelines. The potential contributions of this study include enhancing our understanding of factors influencing physicians’ continuance behavior, and providing guidance on developing effective automated knowledge-based clinical decision support

The Role of Perceived Mobile Device Benefits and Emotional Attachment in Enhancing the Use of Mobile-Enabled Social Networks

The use of social networks has grown phenomenally in the past decade making these networks an important part of individuals’ lives and organizations’ interests. The growth and development of mobile technology led to a complete transformation in the means and purposes of using social networks. Despite the abundance of research on the use of social networks, there is a lack of research in the area of mobile-enabled social networks, social networks accessed using mobile devices. In this paper, we study factors influencing individuals’ intention to use mobile-enabled social networks. Specifically, we focus on studying the role of mobile device related factors including perceived device benefits and emotional attachment using a research model that uses theory of planned behavior and innovation diffusion theory as research framework. The potential contribution of this research includes understanding users’ participation in mobile-enabled social networks and why users prefer this type over traditional social networks

Integrating Information Systems and Healthcare Research to Understand Physicians’ use of Health Information Systems: a Literature Review

Healthcare has been of great importance to societies for centuries and this importance is reflected in the abundance of healthcare research that involves, not only new interventions, but clinicians’ response to change in the medical practice as well. Information systems (IS) research failed to take full advantage of healthcare research focusing on studying IS as an intervention or change in clinical workflows. To fill this gap, we conducted an extensive literature survey in both IS and healthcare research which included 175 papers from healthcare, IS journals and conferences that study physicians’ use of HIS and clinical guidelines. Results of this review show that there are two different streams of HIS research in IS and healthcare domains and by integrating those streams we can create a rich understanding of HIS use. We build a model for HIS use based on our review and provide areas for future research
