D-brane orbiting NS5-branes
We study real time dynamics of a Dp-brane orbiting a stack of NS5-branes. It
is generally known that a BPS D-brane moving in the vicinity of NS5-branes
becomes unstable due to the presence of tachyonic degree of freedom induced on
the D-brane. Indeed, the D-brane necessarily falls into the fivebranes due to
gravitational attraction and eventually collapses into a pressureless fluid.
Such a decay of the D-brane is known to be closely related to the rolling
tachyon problem. In this paper we show that in special cases the decay of
D-brane caused by gravitational attraction can be avoided. Namely for certain
values of energy and angular momentum the D-brane orbits around the fivebranes,
maintaining certain distance from the fivebranes all the time, and the process
of tachyon condensation is suppressed. We show that the tachyonic degree of
freedom induced on such a D-brane really disappears and the brane returns to a

Momentum modes of M5-branes in a 2d space
We study M5 branes by considering the selfdual strings parallel to a plane.
With the internal oscillation frozen, each selfdual string gives a 5d SYM
field. All selfdual strings together give a 6d field with 5 scalars, 3 gauge
degrees of freedom and 8 fermionic degrees of freedom in adjoint representation
of U(N). Selfdual strings with the same orientation have the SYM-type
interaction. For selfdual strings with the different orientations, which could
also be taken as the unparallel momentum modes of the 6d field on that plane or
the (p,q) (r,s) strings on D3 with (p,q)\neq (r,s), the [i,j]+[j,k]\rightarrow
[i,k] relation is not valid, so the coupling cannot be written in terms of the
standard N \times N matrix multiplication. 3-string junction, which is the
bound state of the unparallel [i,j] [j,k] selfdual strings, may play a role

Dynamics of BPS States in the Dirac-Born-Infeld Theory
The Dirac-Born-Infeld action with transverse scalar fields is considered to
study the dynamics of various BPS states. We first describe the characteristic
properties of the so-called 1/2 and 1/4 BPS states on the D3 brane, which can
be interpreted as F/D-strings ending on a D3-brane in Type IIB string theory
picture. We then study the response of the BPS states to low energy excitations
of massless fields on the brane, the scalar fields representing the shape
fluctuation of the brane and U(1) gauge fields describing the open string
excitations on the D-brane. This leads to an identification of interactions
between BPS states including the static potentials and the kinetic

Centrality and rapidity dependence of inclusive jet production in root sNN=5.02 TeV proton-lead collisions with the ATLAS detector
Measurements of the centrality and rapidity dependence of inclusive jet production in âsNN = 5.02 TeV protonâlead (p+Pb) collisions and the jet cross-section âs = 2.76 TeV protonâproton collisions are presented. These quantities are measured in datasets corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 27.8 nbâ»Âčand 4.0 pbâ»Âč, respectively, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2013. The p+Pb collision centrality was characterised using the total transverse energy measured in the pseudorapidity interval â4.9<η<â3.2 in the direction of the lead beam. Results are presented for the double-differential per-collision yields as a function of jet rapidity and transverse momentum (pT) for minimum-bias and centrality-selected p+Pb collisions, and are compared to the jet rate from the geometric expectation. The total jet yield in minimum-bias events is slightly enhanced above the expectation in a pT-dependent manner but is consistent with the expectation within uncertainties. The ratios of jet spectra from different centrality selections show a strong modification of jet production at all pT at forward rapidities and for large pTpT at mid-rapidity, which manifests as a suppression of the jet yield in central events and an enhancement in peripheral events. These effects imply that the factorisation between hard and soft processes is violated at an unexpected level in protonânucleus collisions. Furthermore, the modifications at forward rapidities are found to be a function of the total jet energy only, implying that the violations may have a simple dependence on the hard partonâparton kinematics.G. String Multiplets from an Invariant 2-Brane
We study a three-dimensional gauge theory obtained from the dimensional
reduction of a D4-brane worldvolume theory in the background of space-time
moduli. An SL(3) symmetry in this theory, which acts on fields as well as
coupling constants, is identified. By comparing the energies with the string
tensions, we show that certain 1/2 supersymmetric classical solutions of this
theory can be identified as SL(3,Z) multiplets of type II strings in eight
dimensions. Results are then generalized to the non-linear Born-Infeld action.
We also discuss the possibility of 1/8 BPS states in this theory and their

Exact String Solutions in Nontrivial Backgrounds
We show how the classical string dynamics in -dimensional gravity
background can be reduced to the dynamics of a massless particle constrained on
a certain surface whenever there exists at least one Killing vector for the
background metric. We obtain a number of sufficient conditions, which ensure
the existence of exact solutions to the equations of motion and constraints.
These results are extended to include the Kalb-Ramond background. The
-brane dynamics is also analyzed and exact solutions are found. Finally, we
illustrate our considerations with several examples in different dimensions.

Twistor Strings with Flavour
We explore the tree-level description of a class of N=2 UV-finite SYM
theories with fundamental flavour within a topological B-model twistor string
framework. In particular, we identify the twistor dual of the Sp(N) gauge
theory with one antisymmetric and four fundamental hypermultiplets, as well as
that of the SU(N) theory with 2N hypermultiplets. This is achieved by suitably
orientifolding/orbifolding the original N=4 setup of Witten and adding a
certain number of new topological 'flavour'-branes at the orientifold/orbifold
fixed planes to provide the fundamental matter. We further comment on the
appearance of these objects in the B-model on CP(3|4). An interesting aspect of
our construction is that, unlike the IIB description of these theories in terms
of D3 and D7-branes, on the twistor side part of the global flavour symmetry is
realised geometrically. We provide evidence for this correspondence by

Beam-induced and cosmic-ray backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector during the LHC 2012 proton-proton running period
Published: May 20, 2016This paper discusses various observations on beam-induced and cosmic-ray backgrounds in the ATLAS detector during the LHC 2012 proton-proton run. Building on published results based on 2011 data, the correlations between background and residual pressure of the beam vacuum are revisited. Ghost charge evolution over 2012 and its role for backgrounds are evaluated. New methods to monitor ghost charge with beam-gas rates are presented and observations of LHC abort gap population by ghost charge are discussed in detail. Fake jets from colliding bunches and from ghost charge are analysed with improved methods, showing that ghost charge in individual radio-frequency buckets of the LHC can be resolved. Some results of two short periods of dedicated cosmic-ray background data-taking are shown; in particular cosmic-ray muon induced fake jet rates are compared to Monte Carlo simulations and to the fake jet rates from beam background. A thorough analysis of a particular LHC fill, where abnormally high background was observed, is presented. Spatial Overlap and Habitat Selection of Corvid Species in European Cities
Understanding habitat and spatial overlap in sympatric species of urban areas would aid in predicting species and community modifications in response to global change. Habitat overlap has been widely investigated for specialist species but neglected for generalists living in urban settings. Many corvid species are generalists and are adapted to urban areas. This work aimed to determine the urban habitat requirements and spatial overlap of five corvid species in sixteen European cities during the breeding season. All five studied corvid species had high overlap in their habitat selection while still having particular tendencies. We found three species, the Carrion/Hooded Crow, Rook, and Eurasian Magpie, selected open habitats. The Western Jackdaw avoided areas with bare soil cover, and the Eurasian Jay chose more forested areas. The species with similar habitat selection also had congruent spatial distributions. Our results indicate that although the corvids had some tendencies regarding habitat selection, as generalists, they still tolerated a wide range of urban habitats, which resulted in high overlap in their habitat niches and spatial distributions
