Conformal Invariance and Duality in Self-Dual Gravity and (2,1) Heterotic String Theory

A system of gravity coupled to a 2-form gauge field, a dilaton and Yang-Mills fields in 2n2n dimensions arises from the (2,1) sigma model or string. The field equations imply that the curvature with torsion and Yang-Mills field strength are self-dual in four dimensions, or satisfy generalised self-duality equations in 2n2n dimensions. The Born-Infeld-type action describing this system is simplified using an auxiliary metric and shown to be classically Weyl invariant only in four dimensions. A dual form of the action is found (no isometries are required). In four dimensions, the dual geometry is self-dual gravity without torsion coupled to a scalar field. In D>4D>4 dimensions, the dual geometry is hermitian and determined by a D−4D-4 form potential KK, generalising the K\"{a}hler potential of the four dimensional case, with the fundamental 2-form given by J~=i∗∂∂ˉK\tilde J= i*\partial \bar \partial K. The coupling to Yang-Mills is through a term K∧tr(F∧F)K\wedge tr (F\wedge F) and leads to a Uhlenbeck-Yau field equation J~ijFij=0\tilde J^{ij}F_{ij}=0.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, no figures. The evolution of strategic timing in collective-risk dilemmas

    Get PDF
In collective-risk dilemmas, a group needs to collaborate over time to avoid a catastrophic event. This gives rise to a coordination game with many equilibria, including equilibria where no one contributes, and thus no measures against the catastrophe are taken. In this game, the timing of contributions becomes a strategic variable that allows individuals to interact and influence one another. Herein, we use evolutionary game theory to study the impact of strategic timing on equilibrium selection. Depending on the risk of catastrophe, we identify three characteristic regimes. For low risks, defection is the only equilibrium, whereas high risks promote equilibria with sufficient contributions. Intermediate risks pose the biggest challenge for cooperation. In this risk regime, the option to interact over time is critical; if individuals can contribute over several rounds, then the group has a higher chance to succeed, and the expected welfare increases. This positive effect of timing is of particular importance in larger groups, where successful coordination becomes increasingly difficul

Einstein Supergravity and New Twistor String Theories

    Get PDF
A family of new twistor string theories is constructed and shown to be free from world-sheet anomalies. The spectra in space-time are calculated and shown to give Einstein supergravities with second order field equations instead of the higher derivative conformal supergravities that arose from earlier twistor strings. The theories include one with the spectrum of N=8 supergravity, another with the spectrum of N=4 supergravity coupled to N=4 super-Yang-Mills, and a family with N≄0N\ge 0 supersymmetries with the spectra of self-dual supergravity coupled to self-dual super-Yang-Mills. The non-supersymmetric string with N=0 gives self-dual gravity coupled to self-dual Yang-Mills and a scalar. A three-graviton amplitude is calculated for the N=8 and N=4 theories and shown to give a result consistent with the cubic interaction of Einstein supergravity.Comment: LaTeX, 69 pages, no figures; v2: minor corrections made, footnotes and references adde

Turbulence kinetic energy equation for dilute suspensions

    Get PDF
A multiphase turbulence closure model is presented which employs one transport equation, namely the turbulence kinetic energy equation. The proposed form of this equation is different from the earlier formulations in some aspects. The power spectrum of the carrier fluid is divided into two regions, which interact in different ways and at different rates with the suspended particles as a function of the particle-eddy size ratio and density ratio. The length scale is described algebraically. A mass/time averaging procedure for the momentum and kinetic energy equations is adopted. The resulting turbulence correlations are modeled under less retrictive assumptions comparative to previous work. The closures for the momentum and kinetic energy equations are given. Comparisons of the predictions with experimental results on liquid-solid jet and gas-solid pipe flow show satisfactory agreement

    Modulated Elliptical Slot

    Get PDF
A novel modulated slot design has been proposed and tested. The proposed slot is aimed to replace the inefficient small dipoles used in conventional MST-based imaging systems. The developed slot is very attractive as MST array element due to its small size and high efficiency/modulation depth. In fact, the developed slot has been successfully used to implement the first prototype of a microwave camera operating at 24 GHZ. It is also being used in the design of the second generation of the camera. Finally, the designed elliptical slot can be used as an electronically controlled waveguide iris for many other purposes (for instance in constructing waveguide reflective phase shifters and multiplexers/switches)

The Importance of Character Education for Tweens as Consumers

    Get PDF
Tweens is a term that denotes a market segment mentality that falls between children at the lower end and teens at the upper end. Tweens marketing strategies are considered critical for most global brands. Advocates against excessive consumerism and materialism polluting innocent childhood, specifically tweens, call for values implantation through character education in the school to breed more educated consumers. The effect of implanting character building programs in schools on the consumer behavior of the exposed children in the marketplace, however, has never been tested before. This research endeavor is, in essence, an overlap between consumer behavior and educational psychology, investigating the link between personality and behavior in the market. It falls under both positivist and interpretive consumer research, specifically the consumer socialization of children. The aim of this work is to develop a conceptual model linking character education to purchasing lifestyles and consumption patterns of the exposed children as consumers. Following, prospects for future research are highlighted.Educational psychology, character education, attitudes and lifestyles, opinion-leadership, humanitarianism, ethnocentrism, adolescents and middle schools
