Alberta Legal Services Mapping Project: Brief Overview

    Get PDF
The Alberta Legal Services Mapping Project is a collaborative action research initiative undertaken by the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice in association with a broad partnership of justice community representatives. The research will lead to the creation of a province-wide “map” of legal services that provide to the Alberta public - information, education, legal advice, legal representation and/or other support or assistance related to legal problems. The map will include the central services provided by pro bono initiatives, clinics, public legal education services, courts, legal aid, the private Bar and social services relevant to the needs of users of the justice system, and will extend to civil, family, criminal and administrative justice programs

Dataset of the suitability of major food crops in Africa under climate change

    Get PDF
Understanding the extent and adapting to the impacts of climate change in the agriculture sector in Africa requires robust data on which technical and policy decisions can be based. However, there are no publicly available comprehensive data of which crops are suitable where under current and projected climate conditions for impact assessments and targeted adaptation planning. We developed a dataset on crop suitability of 23 major food crops (eight cereals, six legumes & pulses, six root & tuber crops, and three in banana-related family) for rainfed agriculture in Africa in terms of area and produced quantity. This dataset is based on the EcoCrop model parameterized with temperature, precipitation and soil data and is available for the historical period and until mid-century. The scenarios used for future projections are SSP1:RCP2.6, SSP3:RCP7.0 and SSP5:RCP8.5. The dataset provides a quantitative assessment of the impacts of climate change on crop production potential and can enable applications and linkages of crop impact studies to other socioeconomic aspects, thereby facilitating more comprehensive understanding of climate change impacts and assessment of options for building resilience

The „justice system‟ is a fundamental and far-reaching component of our system of democracy in Alberta. It is not one united system but an institutionalized process to address criminal and civil conflicts. It is made up of a complexity of organizations with overlapping provincial and federal jurisdictions. There are substantive and procedural laws with four broad divisions: civil, family, criminal and administrative. Many of these laws and the legal services associated with them, function to avoid conflict and legal problems. Ideally, legal services work to resolve conflicts without resorting to the courts or tribunals, the purpose of which is to act as a final resort in cases of high conflict

The definitive version was published in Ecology and Evolution 5 (2015): 1278–1290, doi:10.1002/ece3.1437.Compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) of amino acids (AA) has rapidly become a powerful tool in studies of food web architecture, resource use, and biogeochemical cycling. However, applications to avian ecology have been limited because no controlled studies have examined the patterns in AA isotope fractionation in birds. We conducted a controlled CSIA feeding experiment on an avian species, the gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua), to examine patterns in individual AA carbon and nitrogen stable isotope fractionation between diet (D) and consumer (C) (Δ13CC-D and Δ15NC-D, respectively). We found that essential AA δ13C values and source AA δ15N values in feathers showed minimal trophic fractionation between diet and consumer, providing independent but complimentary archival proxies for primary producers and nitrogen sources respectively, at the base of food webs supporting penguins. Variations in nonessential AA Δ13CC-D values reflected differences in macromolecule sources used for biosynthesis (e.g., protein vs. lipids) and provided a metric to assess resource utilization. The avian-specific nitrogen trophic discrimination factor (TDFGlu-Phe = 3.5 ± 0.4‰) that we calculated from the difference in trophic fractionation (Δ15NC-D) of glutamic acid and phenylalanine was significantly lower than the conventional literature value of 7.6‰. Trophic positions of five species of wild penguins calculated using a multi-TDFGlu-Phe equation with the avian-specific TDFGlu-Phe value from our experiment provided estimates that were more ecologically realistic than estimates using a single TDFGlu-Phe of 7.6‰ from the previous literature. Our results provide a quantitative, mechanistic framework for the use of CSIA in nonlethal, archival feathers to study the movement and foraging ecology of avian consumers. This research was funded by National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs [grants ANT-0125098, ANT-0739575] and the 2013 Antarctic Science Bursaries
