    Constraints on Parity-Even Time Reversal Violation in the Nucleon-Nucleon System and Its Connection to Charge Symmetry Breaking

    Parity-even time reversal violation (TRV) in the nucleon-nucleon interaction is reconsidered. The TRV ρ\rho-exchange interaction on which recent analyses of measurements are based is necessarily also charge-symmetry breaking (CSB). Limits on its strength gˉρ\bar{g}_\rho relative to regular ρ\rho-exchange are extracted from recent CSB experiments in neutron-proton scattering. The result gˉρ6.7×103\bar{g}_\rho\le 6.7\times 10^{-3} (95% CL) is considerably lower than limits inferred from direct TRV tests in nuclear processes.     Detection of Relative Afferent Pupillary Defects Using Eye Tracking and a VR Headset.

    PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of detecting relative afferent pupillary defects (RAPDs) using a commercial virtual reality headset equipped with an eye tracker. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study in which we compare the new computerized RAPD test with the traditional clinical standard using the swinging flashlight test. Eighty-two participants including 20 healthy volunteers aged 10 to 88 years were enrolled in this study. We present a bright/dark stimulus alternating between the eyes every 3 seconds using a virtual reality headset, and we simultaneously record changes in pupil size. To determine the presence of an RAPD, we developed an algorithm analyzing the pupil size differences. For the assessment of the performance of the automated and the manual measurement a post hoc impression based on all available data is created. The accuracy of the manual clinical evaluation and the computerized method is compared using confusion matrices and the gold standard of the post hoc impression. The latter is based on all available clinical information. RESULTS We found that the computerized method detected RAPD with a sensitivity of 90.2% and an accuracy of 84.4%, as compared to the post hoc impression. This was not significantly different from the clinical evaluation with a sensitivity of 89.1% and an accuracy of 88.3%. CONCLUSIONS The presented method offers an accurate, easy to use, and fast method to measure an RAPD. In contrast to today's clinical practice, the measures are quantitative and objective.     Constraints on a Parity-Conserving/Time-Reversal-Non-Conserving Interaction

    Time-Reversal-Invariance non-conservation has now been unequivocally demonstrated in a direct measurement at CPLEAR. What about tests of time-reversal-invariance in systems other than the kaon system? Tests of time-reversal-invariance belong to two classes: searches for parity violating (P-odd)/time-reversal-invariance-odd (T-odd) interactions, and for P-even/T-odd interactions (assuming CPT conservation this implies C-conjugation non-conservation). Limits on a P-odd/T-odd interaction follow from measurements of the electric dipole moment of the neutron (with a present upper limit of 6 x 10^-26 e.cm [95% C.L.]). It provides a limit on a P-odd/T-odd pion-nucleon coupling constant which is less than 10^-4 times the weak interaction strength. Experimental limits on a P-even/T-odd interaction are much less stringent. Following the standard approach of describing the nucleon-nucleon interaction in terms of meson exchanges, it can be shown that only charged rho-meson exchange and A_1 meson exchange can lead to a P-even/T-odd interaction. The better constraints stem from measurements of the electric dipole moment of the neutron and from measurements of charge-symmetry breaking in neutron-proton elastic scattering. The latter experiments were executed at TRIUMF (497 and 347 MeV) and at IUCF (183 MeV). Weak decay experiments may provide limits which will possibly be comparable. All other experiments, like gamma decay experiments, detailed balance experiments, polarization - analyzing power difference determinations, and five-fold correlation experiments with polarized incident nucleons and aligned nuclear targets, have been shown to be at least an order of magnitude less sensitive.Comment: 15 pages LaTeX, including 5 PostScript figures.     The Off Shell ρ\rho-ω\omega Mixing in the QCD Sum Rules

    The q2q^2 dependence of the ρω\rho-\omega mixing amplitude is analyzed with the use of the QCD sum rules and the dispersion relation. Going off shell the mixing decreases, changes sign at q20.4mρ2>0q^2 \simeq 0.4 m_{\rho}^2 > 0 and is negative in the space like region.     QED radiative corrections to the decay pi^0 to e^+e^-

    We reconsider QED radiative corrections (RC) to the π0e+e\pi^{0}\to e^{+}e^{-} decay width. One kind of RC investigated earlier has a renormalization group origin and can be associated with the final state interaction of electron and positron. It determines the distribution of lepton pair invariant masses in the whole kinematic region. The other type of RC has a double-logarithmic character and is related to almost on-mass-shell behavior of the lepton form factors. The total effect of RC for the π0e+e\pi^{0}\to e^{+}e^{-} decay is estimated to be 3.2% and for the decay ηe+e\eta \to e^{+}e^{-} is 4.3%.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    Measuring pelvises in 3D surface scans and in MDCT generated virtual environment: Considerations for applications in the forensic context.

    Virtual Anthropology (VA) transposes the traditional methods of physical anthropology to virtual environments using imaging techniques and exploits imaging technologies to devise new methodological protocols. In this research, we investigate whether the measurements used in the Diagnose Sexuelle Probabiliste (DSP) and Ischio-Pubic Index (IPI) differ significantly when 3D models of a bone are generated using 3D surface scans (3DSS) and Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) scans. Thirty pelvises were selected from the SIMON identified skeletal collection. An equal ratio of females to males was sought, as well as a good preservation of the bones. The pelvises were scanned using an MDCT scanner and a 3D surface scanner. The measurements of the DSP and IPI methods on the dry bones (referred to as macroscopic measurements here), and then to the 3D models. The intra- and interobserver, using the Technical Error of Measurement (TEM) and relative Technical Error of Measurement (rTEM) error was assessed, and we aimed to observe if the measurements made on the MDCT and 3DSS generated models were significantly different from those taken on the dry bones. Additionally, the normality of the data was tested (Shapiro-Wilk test) and the differences in measurements was evaluated using parametric (Student t-tests) and non-parametric (Wilcoxon) tests. The TEM and rTEM calculations show high intra and interobserver consistency in general. However, some measurements present insufficient inter- and intraobserver agreement. Student t and Wilcoxon tests indicate potentially significant differences of some measurements between the different environments. The results show that especially in the virtual environment, it is not easy to find the right angle for some of the DSP measurements, However, when comparing the measurement differences between dry and virtual bones, the results show that most of the differences are less than or equal to 2.5 mm. Considering the IPI, the landmarks are already difficult to determine on the dry bone, but they are even more difficult to locate in the virtual environment. Nevertheless, this study shows that quantitative methods may be better suited for application in the virtual environment, but further research using different methods is needed

    Anurans compose an important part of the diet of several species of Neotropical snakes. Here we report a predator-prey interaction involving Chironius fuscus and Ololygon argyreornata. A young individual of C. fuscus preyed three specimens of O. argyreornata, in soil, while occurred explosive reproduction of frogs. This contribution reinforces ecological data that C. fuscus forages mainly on the ground. We believe that this interaction can occur with relative frequency and that eventually arboreal frogs can compose important sample in C. fuscus’ diet, which is based on terrestrial amphibians.Keywords: anurophagy, Colubrinae, diet, feeding habits.Os anuros compõem uma parcela importante da dieta de diversas espécies de serpentes neotropicais. Neste trabalho, relatamos uma interação de predador-presa envolvendo Chironius fuscus e Ololygon argyreornata. Um indivíduo jovem de C. fuscus apresou três espécimes de O. argyreornata, no solo, enquanto ocorria reprodução explosiva dos anuros. Essa contribuição reforça os dados ecológicos de que C. fuscus forrageia, principalmente, no chão. Acreditamos que essa interação possa ocorrer com relativa frequência e que, eventualmente, os anuros arborícolas possam compor importante amostra na dieta de C. fuscus, a qual é baseada em anfíbios terrestres.Palavras-chave: anurofagia, Colubrinae, dieta, hábitos alimentares

    Thin Ice Target for 16^{16}O(p,p') experiment

    A windowless and self-supporting ice target is described. An ice sheet with a thickness of 29.7 mg/cm2^2 cooled by liquid nitrogen was placed at the target position of a magnetic spectrometer and worked stably in the 16^{16}O(p,p)(p,p') experiment at Ep=392E_{p}=392 MeV.     A quark model analysis of the charge symmetry breaking in nuclear force

    In order to investigate the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in the short range part of the nuclear force, we calculate the difference of the masses of the neutron and the proton, ΔM\Delta {\rm M}, the difference of the scattering lengths of the p-p and n-n scatterings, Δa\Delta a, and the difference of the analyzing power of the proton and the neutron in the n-p scattering, ΔA(θ)\Delta A(\theta), by a quark model. In the present model the sources of CSB are the mass difference of the up and down quarks and the electromagnetic interaction. We investigate how much each of them contributes to ΔM\Delta {\rm M}, Δa\Delta a and ΔA(θ)\Delta A(\theta). It is found that the contribution of CSB of the short range part in the nuclear force is large enough to explain the observed ΔA(θ)\Delta A(\theta), while Δa\Delta a is rather underestimated.Comment: 26 pages,6 figure
