Probing local electronic states in the quantum Hall regime with a side coupled quantum dot

We demonstrate a new method for locally probing the edge states in the quantum Hall regime utilizing a side coupled quantum dot positioned at an edge of a Hall bar. By measuring the tunneling of electrons from the edge states into the dot, we acquire information on the local electrochemical potential and electron temperature of the edge states. Furthermore, this method allows us to observe the spatial modulation of the electrostatic potential at the edge state due to many-body screening effect.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

A first-principles study of tunneling magnetoresistance in Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001) magnetic tunnel junctions

We investigated the spin-dependent transport properties of Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001) magnetic tunneling junctions (MTJs) on the basis of first-principles calculations of the electronic structures and the ballistic conductance. The calculated tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio of a Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001) MTJ was about 160%, which was much smaller than that of a Fe/MgO/Fe(001) MTJ (1600%) for the same barrier thickness. However, there was an evanescent state with delta 1 symmetry in the energy gap around the Fermi level of normal spinel MgAl2O4, indicating the possibility of a large TMR in Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001) MTJs. The small TMR ratio of the Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001) MTJ was due to new conductive channels in the minority spin states resulting from a band-folding effect in the two-dimensional (2-D) Brillouin zone of the in-plane wave vector (k//) of the Fe electrode. Since the in-plane cell size of MgAl2O4 is twice that of the primitive in-plane cell size of bcc Fe, the bands in the boundary edges are folded, and minority-spin states coupled with the delta 1 evanescent state in the MgAl2O4 barrier appear at k//=0, which reduces the TMR ratio of the MTJs significantly.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

Detection of spin polarization with a side coupled quantum dot

We propose realistic methods to detect local spin polarization, which utilize a quantum dot side coupled to the target system. By choosing appropriate states in the dot, we can put spin selectivity to the dot and detect spins in the target with small disturbance. We also present an experiment which realizes one of the proposed spin detection schemes in magnetic fields.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

Participants in previous studies on the Dark Triad of personality (Machiavellianism, Psychopathy, and Narcissism) have been mainly college students or older. In the present study, participants were 799 high school students, and the purpose was to identify the factor structure of the Dark Triad and examine differences according to sex, school year, and career direction. Additionally, we investigated the relationship between the Dark Triad and help-seeking attitudes. The results were in line with previous evidence, as the hierarchical factor structure of the Dark Triad was identified. Furthermore, negative influences of Machiavellianism and Psychopathy on help-seeking attitudes were found. On the other hand, there was a positive influence of Narcissism on help-seeking attitudes.

In this paper, previous studies about anger and anger expression are overviewed. They are divided into five approaches: (1) Evolutional, (2) Physical, (3) Drive-Behavioral, (4) Cognitive, and (5) Social Constructive. Following an examination of the definition of anger in each approach and showing the relations and differences between them, the direction of future studies on anger and anger expression is discussed.感情科学の展
