    Segment Wise Communication Delay Measurement for Managing Renewable Energy Sources in Smart Grid

    In order to meet the communication delay requirements of various message types while developing applications for the Smart Grid (SG), selection of appropriate communication technology is crucial and requires network segment-wise delay characterization under different network conditions. Thus, this thesis presents a segment-wise communication delay measurement technique and experimental results for SG applications. In this technique, an Arduino based test bed is developed to characterize communication delays across multiple hops using different communication technologies such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and cellular communication. This test bed is customized for the measurement of the delay involved in several network segments between remotely deployed photovoltaic (PV) panels and monitoring locations. Extensive delay measurement tests are conducted with varying data packet sizes under various controlled background traffic conditions, including Internet traffic. The test results can be used to infer the suitability of various communication technologies under diverse network conditions

    Adaptive routing in packet-switched networks using agents updating methods

    This paper investigates a non-trivial, multi-objective and multi-constraint routing optimisation problem for dynamic packet-switched networks. The research adopts the application of the ant colony optimisation process into routing and congestion control in telecommunication networks. This paper suggests the use of epochal updating in conjunction with modified incremental updating to update the routing table in each switching node. The resulting new approach is called the For/Backward approach. Three updating methods (Forward, Backword, For/Backword) are simulated over a packet-switched network, representing Malaysian Backbone Network, using different combinations of traffic and geographical traffic patterns. The simulation results show a clear improvement on network performance (less average packet delay and greater throughput) using the For/Backward approach compared to the Forward and Backward methods. Furthermore, the behavior of the Forward and Backward methods is studied for inconsistency of behavior

    Fauconnier (1994) menggambarkan emosi sebagai “an extremely complex structure”. Meskipun emosi terwujud sebagai sebuah entiti yang sifatnya abstrak dan kompleks untuk difahami, namun bentuk-bentuk simboliknya masih tetap boleh dijejaki. Jelas Gademar (1976), apa sahaja bentuk yang melahirkan ekspresi perasan (emosi) dan pemikiran manusia, maka ia dianggap sebagai teks yang boleh dianalisis dan difahami secara konkrit. Oleh itu, makalah ini secara sederhana cuba meneliti pengaruh budaya terhadap konseptualisasi metafora dan metonimi TAKUT dalam dua bahasa, iaitu Melayu dan Inggeris. Data bagi metafora emosi TAKUT dalam kajian ini diperoleh secara terus daripada pangkalan korpus DBP dengan bersumberkan sebuah majalah seram, iaitu Mastika. Asas perbandingannya adalah berdasarkan The Conceptual Metaphors of Fear in English oleh Kövecses (1990). Untuk memenuhi objektif tersebut, maka dua pendekatan telah dipilih untuk diterapkan dalam kajian ini, iaitu kaedah Pengecaman Metafora oleh Steen (2007) dan teori Integrasi Konseptual oleh Fauconnier dan Turner (1998, 2002). Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa metafora konsepsi TAKUT yang bersifat sejagat bagi kedua-dua bahasa ialah TAKUT ADALAH CECAIR DI DALAM BEKAS. Hal ini dapat dijelaskan melalui konsep pengalaman badaniah atau embodied experience dengan andaian bahawa setiap manusia memiliki sistem pengalaman kognitif yang sama. Walau bagaimanapun, terdapat juga perbezaan minimal yang wujud antara kedua-dua bahasa tersebut. Boleh dikatakan bahawa kepelbagaian yang muncul itu adalah disebabkan oleh motivasi sosiobudaya yang berbeza. Kajian ini secara tidak langsung telah mengukuhkan hipotesis yang diusulkan oleh Kövecses (1990), iaitu kebolehan menggunakan bahasa merupakan satu keupayaan kognitif yang dipengaruhi secara kolektif oleh inventori bahasa, sosiobudaya dan pengalaman individu

    DESAIN DAN REALISASI SEMI AUTONOMOUS OUTDOOR MOBILE ROBOT PADA SISTEM ROBOT JELAJAH RERUNTUHAN

    Robot adalah alat mekanik yang dibuat untuk membantu manusia dalam melakukan sesuatu yang diinginkan. Salah satu keunggulan robot adalah mempunyai daya tahan tinggi dan mampu mengerjakan apa yang menjadi tujuan secara konsisten. Keunggulan lainnya ialah mempunyai perhitungan yang sangat akurat dan bisa disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan. Semi Autonomous adalah robot yang tetap memakai kontrol pada user tetapi untuk menghadapi hambatan robot akan menyesuaikan dan mencari jalan baru untuk melewati hambatan, meskipun kontrol dipegang oleh user. Didalam tugas akhir ini dibuat desain dan realisasi dari robot semi autonomus untuk menjelajahi reruntuhan, dan robot ini hanya digunakan di area darat. Dari hasil pengujian dan analisis yang telah dilakukan, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa, Desain dan realisiasi mobile robot sudah berhasil untuk mendeteksi obstacle yang ada di hadapan robot. Sistem kontrol gerak robot dan monitoring berjalan dengan baik dantandai dengan respon terhadap pergerakan robot yang sesuai dengan keadaan lingkungan. Masih ada selisih yang dengan nilai rata-rata 10 cm antara jarak obstacle dan robot. Pergerakan robot ketika menghadapi obstacle sudah sesuai prosedur yang dibuat pada sistem gerak robot. Terbukti pada sketsa diatas robot berhasil melalui obstacle yang ada pada lingkungannya dan memiliki rasio keberhasilan 88 %. Sedangkan, sistem fuzzy logic yang ditanamkan belum berhasil berjalan dengan baik dikarenakan input yang masuk pada sistem fuzzy tidak sesuai dengan pembacaan sensor.     Determination of Alliin and Allicin in different types Garlic using High Performance Liquid Chromatography

    Abstract:Alliin and Allicin products were measured and determined by ion-pair reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP-LC) with UV detection at 210 nm. These two Compounds were extracted from various types of garlic with methanol / ethyl acetate and chromatographed on octadecyl silane column [ODS C18 (250 x 4.6 mm id)] with gradient elution from 0.01M phosphate buffer (PH=2.5) with 5M heptanslfonic acid (mobile phaseA) to 0.01M phosphate buffer (PH=2.5) acetonitrile(1:1) (mobile phase B). Allicin was eluted after Alliin. The results observed show that the concentration differs between the different types of garlic. The aqueous Iraqi garlic extract has the highest concentration of Alliin and Allicin (17.9 ppm, 0.9%),(23.94 ppm, 1.2%) respectively. But the lowest concentration of allicin was found in French garlic extract (0.56 ppm, 0.03%) while the lowest level of Alliin was (4.3 ppm, 0.22%) in Chinese garlic extract

    The effect of active learning strategies on students’ attitudes towards English: a study at Universiti Teknologi Petronas

    The availability and diversity of instructional methods in English classroom has increased tremendously in the last decade. As a result, the lecture format has been redesigned and more interactive teaching and learning strategies have been developed. Hence, this paper explores the effect of active learning on students’ attitudes in learning English as a second language (ESL). Active learning techniques were employed in teaching and learning process for the duration of 12 weeks. At the end of the semester session 2017/2018, a set of questionnaire on students’ attitudes towards English language and active learning was administered to 100 foundation students of English language course at Universiti Teknologi Petronas. The descriptive quantitative analysis was employed to analyse the data by using IBM SPSS statistical software. Findings of the study show that most students have positive attitude towards both English and the use of active learning to teach English. Besides, the higher-order cognitive skill and soft-skill could be developed through the use of active learning strategies
