This paper reports the determination of elastic constants for 56 tropical wood species using the dynamic ultrasonic technique. Longitudinal waves (45 kHz) were used to measure the velocity in the radial (R), tangential (T) and longitudinal (L) anisotropic directions of each sample of wood. The diagonal elastic constants of each species of wood studied were estimated using the values of ultrasonic wave velocities and their mean densities via the Christoffel equations. The results show that there is a linear correlation between the elastic constants in the L, Rand T directions and density of wood. Comparison between the ultrasonic measurement and static measurement indicate that the ultrasonic measurement technique is also capable of assessing the quality of\ud tropical medium and heavy hardwood

A fault syndromes simulator for random access memories

Testing and diagnosis techniques play a key role in the advance of semiconductor memory technology. The challenge of failure detection has created intensive investigation on efficient testing and diagnosis algorithm for better fault coverage and diagnostic resolution. At present, the March test algorithm is used to detect and diagnose all faults related to Random Access Memories. This algorithm also allows the faults to be located and identified. However, the test and diagnosis process is mainly done manually. Due to this, a systematic approach for developing and evaluating memory test algorithm is required. This work is focused on incorporating the March based test algorithm using a software simulator tool for implementing a fast and systematic memory testing algorithm. The simulator allows a user through a GUI to select a March based test algorithm depending on the desired fault coverage and diagnostic resolution. Experimental results show that using the simulator for testing is more efficient than that of the traditional testing algorithm. This new simulator makes it possible for a detailed list of coupling faults and stuck-at faults covered by each algorithm and its percentage to be displayed after a set of test algorithms has been chosen. The percentage of diagnostic resolution is also displayed. This proves that the simulator reduces the trade-off between test time, fault coverage and diagnostic resolution. Moreover, the chosen algorithm can be applied to incorporate with memory built-in self-test and diagnosis, to have a better fault coverage and diagnostic resolution. Universities and industry involved in memory Built-in-Self test, Built-in-Self repair and Built-in-Self diagnose will benefit by saving a few years on finding an efficient algorithm to be implemented in their designs

Onset of Orthorhombic-tetragonal Structure in (YBa2Cu3O7-δ)1-x(Sn02)x Superconducting Ceramics

    Get PDF
High Tc superconductors, (YBa2Cu3O7-δ)1-x(Sn02)x with x ranging from 0.00 to 0.06 were prepared in air under optimum sintering conditions. Superconductivity and the onset of orthorhombic-tetragonal structure are discussed in relation to the results of X-ray diffraction studies. Meissner effect above liquid nitrogen temperature was observed for all the samples, suggesting the retention of orthorhombic structure in the system up to 6% Sn substitution

Eradicating the Crime of Child Labour in Africa: The Roles of Income, Schooling, Fertility, and Foreign Direct Investment

    Get PDF
African continent has the highest rate of child labour in the world. In this empirical study, we examined the impacts of income per capita, primary school enrolment, fertility rate, and the inward foreign direct investment (FDI) stock on the rate of child labour in Africa. We used the panel data on child labour that comprises of 44 African countries for the period 1980–2003 to assemble the largest number of observation on the variables employed. By employing the Panel Estimated Generalized Least Squares (EGLS) with cross-section weights method, the results of regression analysis showed that the raising of income per capita, FDI, and the percentage of school enrolment were highly significant in reducing the rate of child labour in Africa. Furthermore, a decrease in fertility rate was highly significant to curb the incidence of children employment in the labour market. The weighted-R2 of the panel regression was reported at 95.1%. Following the results, the role of government in implementing public policies was discussed
