    Investigation of a Relation between Radiogenic Heat Production Rate (RHPR) and Land Surface Heat Temperature (LST) from Thermal Bands of ASTER and Landsat-8 (TIR-Data): Case Study of West Ras Gharib area North Eastern Desert, Egypt

    In this paper, an attempt was tried to study the relation between the land surface heat temperature (LST), extracted, from the thermal emission infrared data (ASTER-TIR) and (Landsat-8-TIR) imagery and radiogenic heat production rate (RHPR) that calculated from airborne gamma-ray spectrometric data applied on west Ras Gharib area at Northeastern Desert of Egypt. The area is geologically covered mainly by Precambrian basement rocks, which are unconformably overlain by Phanerozoic sedimentary succession. The method used for extraction land surface heat temperature for both ASTER-TIR and Landsat-8-TIR images is the reference channel emissivity technique and founded as the best method comparing to others. The study results showed a relative higher RHPR threshold value reached 4.8 μW/m3. On the other hand, ASTER-TIR Land Surface Temperature (AST-LST) ranges between 27.64oC to 47.2oC and, the Landsat 8-TIR Land Surface Temperature (LS8-LST) ranges between 30.64oC to 50.68oC. Comparing all results, there were a weak relationship or to some extent parallel relation between RHPR and satellite LST; as when the value of the Y-axis is constant, there are multiple values on X-axis, so it is not possible to deduce the value of one variable in terms of the other. The poor relation is regarded to the very weak RHPR which is not enough to affect the surface heat temperature, emission that could be detected by both thermal sensors of ASTER and Landsat-8 satellite TIR data. Other factors such as: topography, wind, shading and scattering, rock moisture and density, can strongly affect the surface temperature. In conclusion, the output results could be improved in areas of very high radioelement concentrations especially 235U, and through the use of the enhanced spatial resolution of future satellite TIR imaging instruments.

    Sickness absenteeism among primary health care workers in Qatar before and during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Objectives: To explore the patterns, trends, nature, and extent of changes in sickness absence among health care workers (HCWs) at the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) in Qatar-during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to previous years and uncover the main associated factors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all sick leaves' records of PHCC HCWs regardless of their profession from January 2019 till August 2021. Results: A total of 41,132 sick leaves were taken during the studied period. The majority of HCWs who availed sick leaves were between 30-39 years (45.9%), females (65.1%), and expatriates (65.1%). Compared with pre-COVID-19 (Jan 2019-Feb 2020), Wave 1 of COVID-19 had significantly less incidence of sick leaves per day per 1000 HCWs. While wave 2 had significantly higher incidence of sick leaves compared to both pre-COVID-19 and wave 1. The number of sick leaves per person among female HCWs was significantly higher than that of male HCWs. Moreover, the number of sick leaves per person among locals were about two times the number among expatriate HCWs. Physicians and nurses had significantly lower number of sick leave per person compared to other professions. The rates of sick leaves due to suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection, back/neck pain and gastroenteritis were significantly higher in the second wave compared to the first wave of COVID-19. Conclusion: Overall and cause specific sick leave rates among HCWs varied significantly across different periods of the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 related sick leave rate was higher during the second wave compared to first one. By addressing the root causes of sick leaves, it is possible to reduce the burden on HCWs and ensure their continued ability to provide essential care to those in need. 2023, The Author(s).Open Access funding provided by the Qatar National Library.Scopu

    The psychological impact of COVID-19 on health care workers working in a unique environment under the umbrella of Qatar Red Crescent Society

    Objectivesto determine the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among healthcare workers (HCWs) working in a unique male-dominated environment under the umbrella of Qatar Red Crescent, and to explore the associated factors during COVID-19 pandemic in Qatar. Methodsa cross-sectional study utilizing a web-based survey was conducted in the period between 15 November 2020 and 22 December 2020. Depression, anxiety, and stress were determined using the 9-items patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9), the 7-item generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7) scale, and the 22- item impact of event scale revised (IES-R), respectively. We conducted multivariable logistic regression analysis to determine the predictors of mental health outcomes among HCWs. Resultsthe proportions of the participants reporting symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were 12.4 (95%CI: 9.3–16.1), 14.2 (95%CI: 10.9–18.1), and 18.5% (95%CI: 14.8–22.7) respectively. Arabs had significantly more severe anxiety levels than non-Arabs (p = 0.031), HCWs with high COVID-19 risk perception experienced more severe mental health outcomes (p < 0.001). The multivariable logistic regression showed that high risk perception was independently associated with depression (adjusted OR 4.62, 95%CI: 2.00–10.68), anxiety (adjusted OR 4.90, 95%CI: 2.24–10.68), and stress (adjusted OR 3.067, 95%CI: 1.62–5.79) with p < 0.001. Compared to nurses, technicians and paramedics were more likely to report anxiety symptoms with (adjusted OR 2.97, 95%CI: 1.23–7.17, p = 0.015), and (adjusted OR 5.48, 95%CI: 1.86–16.12, p = 0.002) respectively. Having a relative or a friend died of COVID-19 infection was significantly associated with depression symptoms (adjusted OR 2.54, 95%CI: 1.21–5.36, p = 0.014). Not living with family was significantly associated with the presence of different mental health outcomes. Conclusionrelatively lower rates of mental health outcomes in this study compared to others could have several explanations related to the unique characteristics of our target population and their working environment.     Barriers to Practicing COVID-19 Preventive Behaviors Among Migrant Workers in Qatar: A Qualitative Study During the First Wave of the Pandemic

    Objectives: Manual and Craft Workers (MACWs), who constitute more than 80% of the population, were identified to be a vulnerable group to COVID-19 in Qatar. The goal of this study is to identify the limitations face MACWs in Qatar towards practicing the COVID-19 preventive measures and thereby designing behavioral change strategies. Methods: This is a qualitative research study in which individual interviews and focus group discussions were utilized for a deep understanding of the phenomenon from key informants. Four onlive individual interviews and four focus groups (n = 55) were conducted and transcribed verbatim. Inductive qualitative analysis was followed to discover the themes of the interviews. Data were analyzed using constant comparative techniques. Results: Major themes elicited from the analysis revealed that the barriers to following COVID-19 preventive behaviors among migrant workers in Qatar included barriers related to knowledge and risk perception; lifestyle and habits; nature of work and living conditions, and barriers related to health communication, diversified cultures, and languages. Conclusion: The findings would support constructing culturally sensitive health education messages and planning for effective health communication campaigns

    SARS-CoV-2 Infection Is at Herd Immunity in the Majority Segment of the Population of Qatar.

    BACKGROUND: Qatar experienced a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) epidemic that disproportionately affected the craft and manual worker (CMW) population, who comprise 60% of the total population. This study aimed to assess ever and/or current infection prevalence in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based survey was conducted during July 26 to September 09, 2020, to assess both anti-SARS-CoV-2 positivity through serological testing and current infection positivity through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Associations with antibody and PCR positivity were identified through regression analyses. RESULTS: The study included 2641 participants, 69.3% of whom were <40 years of age. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 positivity was 55.3% (95% CI, 53.3%-57.3%) and was significantly associated with nationality, geographic location, educational attainment, occupation, and previous infection diagnosis. PCR positivity was 11.3% (95% CI, 9.9%-12.8%) and was significantly associated with nationality, geographic location, occupation, contact with an infected person, and reporting 2 or more symptoms. Infection positivity (antibody and/or PCR positive) was 60.6% (95% CI, 58.6%-62.5%). The proportion of antibody-positive CMWs who had a prior SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis was 9.3% (95% CI, 7.9%-11.0%). Only seven infections were ever severe, and only 1 was ever critical-an infection severity rate of 0.5% (95% CI, 0.2%-1.0%). CONCLUSIONS: Six in every 10 CMWs in Qatar have been infected, suggestive of reaching the herd immunity threshold. Infection severity was low, with only 1 in every 200 infections progressing to be severe or critical. Only 1 in every 10 infections had been previously diagnosed, which is suggestive of mostly asymptomatic or mild infections

    Learning the hard way: the effect of violent conflict on student academic achievement

    We study the effect of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict on various education outcomes for Palestinian high school students in the West Bank during the Second Intifada (2000–2006). Exploiting within-school variation in the number of conflict-related Palestinian fatalities during the academic year, we show that the conflict reduces the probability of passing the final exam, the total test score, and the probability of being admitted to university. The effect of conflict varies with the type and the timing of the violent events the student is exposed to and it is not significant for students in the upper tail of the test score distribution. We discuss various possible transmission mechanisms explaining our main result. Evidence suggests a role for both the conflict-induced deterioration of school infrastructures and the worsening in the student's psychological well-being due to direct exposure to violent events

    Enhanced Surveillance for Detection and Management of Infectious Diseases: Regional Collaboration in the Middle East

    Formed before international negotiations of the revised International Health Regulations (IHR), the Middle East Consortium for Infectious Disease Surveillance (MECIDS) is a regional collaboration aimed at facilitating implementation of the revised IHR and, more broadly, improving the detection and control of infectious disease outbreaks among neighboring countries in an area of continuous dispute. Initially focused on enhancing foodborne disease surveillance, MECIDS has expanded the scope of its work to also include avian and pandemic influenza and other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Here, we describe the history and governance of MECIDS, highlighting key achievements over the consortium's seven-year history, and discuss the future of MECIDS

    Pleural Empyema due to Group D Salmonella

    Non-typhi Salmonella normally presents as a bacteremia, enterocolitis, and endovascular infection but rarely manifests as pleuropulmonary disease. We present a case of a 66-year-old female with underlying pulmonary pathology, secondary to an extensive smoking history, who presented with a left-sided pleural effusion. The causative agent was identified as being group D Salmonella. Decortication of the lung was performed and the patient was discharged on antibiotics with resolution of her symptoms. This case helps to support the inclusion of Salmonella group D as a possible etiological agent of infection in the differential causes of exudative pleural effusions
