    Get PDF
A 56 years old female with breast cancer (BC) and poor controlled diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1) which has registered in a clinical trial for assessment of therapeutic efficacy of b-D-mannuronic acid (M2000) on pre-surgical BC patients is described in this case report. After receiving M2000, the patient was followed for 9 weeks. During this period, cancer mass details, fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels, 2-hour post-prandial blood glucose (2HPP), blood uric acid (BUA) level and urine analysis (UA) were continuously controlled. After 9 weeks of treatment with M2000, her FBG, BUA and UA decreased significantly. This finding was exactly in accordance with our published experimental data about the anti-diabetic effect of M2000 in an animal model. Therefore, it might be concluded that M2000 is probably able to improve DM1 by reducing FBG level, BUA level, glycosuria, ketonuria and proteinuria

Background and aims: There is fairly scarce information about the effects of zinc, an essential trace element, on exercise performance. Studies concentrate mostly on the distribution of this element in the body in response to exercise. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exhaustion exercise on the testosterone levels and plasma lactates in road cyclists who are supplemented with oral zinc for 4 weeks. Methods: In this semi experimental sixteen male road cyclists, who were healthy in the first evaluation were selected from the Tehran traffic team and were divided into two groups according to mass body index zinc group and control group. After 4 weeks zinc supplementation (30 mg/day), blood samples were collected from each subject before and after an exhaustive exercise bout. Data were analyzed by independent and paired sample t test. Results: Total testosterone, free testosterione and lactate levels in two groups were increased by exercise (P0.05). There was a significant difference between effects of exhaustion exercise on free testosterone levels between two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: According to this study, zinc supplementation has no significant effects on testosterone and lactate levels in response to exercise in subjects with a balance diet. However, free testosterone levels were increased by exercise after zinc supplementation

One of the most important infectious diseases in the world is Malaria. About half of the world populations are exposed to the risk of the disease. The program for controlling and eradication of Malaria has been being conducted in our country since many years ago. One of the public health problems in the endemic and non-endemic countries is Imported Malaria which can cause new and permanent infected foci. Population movement and travelling from endemic areas can transmit the disease to the clean areas and can also transmit the drug resistant Protozoa particularly Plasmodium Falciparum. Our case study describes a 30 year old person who has travelled to India for one month. He has visited a doctor in India because of fever, chills, malaise, and has received symptomatic treatment without any specific diagnosis .After returning to Iran, the symptoms appeared again after visiting by a doctor he has hospitalized with a diagnosis of Fever of unknown origin (FUO).He was checked for three days and on the fourth day, the blood smear of the patient showed Plasmodium Vivax. Ultimately he received the appropriate treatment and was discharged from the hospital in a good condition

Purpose : One of the advanced cancer therapy strategies is immune - stimulating compound based immunotherapy Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) is one of the potent superantigens, which can efficiently activate antitumor immune response to eradicate tumor growth and inhibit metastasis. Herein, we evaluated the effect of SEB on the expression of two master microRN As, mir - 335 and mir - 10b, involved in metastasis. Methods : A metastatic breast cancer cell line MDA - MB231was treated with four different concentrations of SEB, including 10, 10 2 , 10 3 and 10 4 ng/ml, for 24 and 48 hours. To identify the cytotoxic effect of S EB, treated cells were examined by MTT assay. The stem loop RT - PCR (TaqMan) was used to analyze the mir - 335 and mir - 10b expression. Results : Results showed that SEB significantly increased the expression of mir - 335 both after 24 and 48 hours ( p v < 0.001 and p v < 0.05, respectively). No significant differences were found in the mir - 10b expression. Conclusion : Moreover, our findings demonstrated no cytotoxic effect of SEB on the treated cells. Our results suggest that SEB probably induces its anti - m etastatic effect via the expression regulation of the main genes which contributes to metastasis

The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of different multimedia glosses on reading comprehension and vocabulary production. To this end, 65 female students of a high school in Qazvin, Iran were selected for the treatment. They consisted of four groups, one comparison group and three multimedia gloss groups. Glossed groups included pictorial gloss group, textual gloss group, and textual-pictorial group.  They were given a pre-test before the treatment and two post-tests of vocabulary production and reading comprehension at the end of the treatment. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA procedure. The results of the data analyses indicated that multimedia glosses performed better than the comparison group on vocabulary production, and there was no difference among three glossed groups. Moreover, for reading comprehension no significant differences were found among the groups

Background: The aim of this study was to determine intestinal and liver helminth infections in Rattus rodents in Tehran Iran. Methods: Overall, 306 traps were put in 39 different regions in Tehran from 2009 to 2010. Rodents, including R. rattus and R. norvegicus were caught by live-traps.They become unconscious and the spinal cords were cut, afterwards the body was dissected and the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, and cecum were studied separately. The dominant type and the prevalence rate of parasites in then rodents were determined based on the infected parts of their body. Results: After recognition of the helminthes’ types, among the 120 total number of rodents, 39 belonged to males, while among the infected rodents, 57(47.5%) were female and 18(15%) were male. The prevalence of infection in Tehran was 62.5%. Seventy cases (58.33%) of helminth infections were observed in R. rattus and 5 cases (4.16%) were observed in R. norvegicus. The maximum prevalence (15.5%) was seen in the center and east part of Tehran, while the minimum (9.16%) was in the north part of the city. The helminthes types and the corresponding percentages were Hymenolepis nana fraterna (35.8%), Heterakis spumosa (17.5%), Hymenolepisdiminuta (7.5%) and Capillaria annulosa (1.6%). The dominant rodent was Rattus rattus and among the identified helminthes, Hymenolepis diminuta and Hymenolepis nana fraterna are zoonotic ones. Conclusion: The information presented here improves our understanding of the major parasitic infections that rodents harbor and can transmit to human and animal populations in Iran. To prevent infectivity of human, the hazard of the identified zoonotic species needs to be contemplated

Malignant tumors of pancreas are usually primary neoplasms and pancreatic metastases are rare findings. We are reporting a case of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the esophagus with pancreatic metastasis. A 59-year old woman was admitted with chief complaint of abdominal pain and mass. She was a known case of esophageal SCC since 4 years before when she had undergone transthoracic esophagectomy and cervical esophago-gastrostomy. In order to evaluate recent abdominal mass, CT scan was done which revealed septated cystic lesion in the body and the tail of the pancreas. Palliative resection of the tumor was performed and its histological study showed SCC compatible with her previously diagnosed esophageal cancer
