Severe respiratory distress in term infants born electively at high altitude
BACKGROUND: We studied the contribution of elective delivery to severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in term babies born at high altitude. METHODS: We prospectively studied the charts of term babies born in Taif Maternity Hospital (1640 m above sea level) between 1/1/2004 and 31/10/2004 who developed RDS and required mechanical ventilation. RESULTS: 8634 deliveries occurred from 37–<41 weeks; 13 (0.15%) had RDS requiring mechanical ventilation. Seven infants delivered at 37–<38 weeks, (OR for RDS = 26 95%CI -4.6 to 5.8), five delivered at 38–<39 weeks, (OR for RDS = 10 95%CI -4.9 to 5.4) and one delivered at >39 weeks. Six of 13 infants were electively delivered without documented lung maturity. CONCLUSION: Infants born at 37 and 38 weeks' gestation remain at significantly increased risk for severe RDS. Elective delivery is responsible for 50% of the potentially avoidable cases. Our data suggest that the altitude does not seem to influence the incidence of severe RDS in term infants born electively
Interaction Strength of Hanger and Horizontal Steel Reinforcement of Dapped End Beams
The dapped end beam members have a special end with low depth at the support area, which results in a weak area against shear stresses. Classical structural analysis doesn’t capture the precise steel reinforcement interaction at the dapped zone area. The main objectives of this study are to investigate the strength of the dapped end area and to analyze stresses in the steel reinforcement to evaluate the shear failure mechanism at the re-entrant corner. The experimental tests conducted on RC beam samples, in addition to the numerical simulation of these samples by a finite element program, have been compared with a mathematical model. The experimental program highlighted the strains in the steel reinforcement in the dapped region to calculate the magnitude of the stresses in the steel reinforcement. In the experimental program, six dapped beams were fabricated with a length of 3 m, a width of 150 mm, and a depth of 300 mm. The notched end has a 150-mm depth and 150-mm height. These beams were loaded by a concentrated load near support to investigate the shear strength capacity. From the results for steel reinforcement strain, it is found that hanger and horizontal steel reinforcements interact to provide dapped end shear strength. The study proposes a new approach to computing shear strength capacity at the re-entrant corner by adding the contributions of the horizontal and hanger steel reinforcement using an appropriate proportion strain factor. This method revealed greater carrying capacity for the dapped end beam compared with other common structural methods. The results of the numerical analysis were done by the ABAQUS finite element program, showing the same behavior as the experimental work. This study proved the common contribution of hanger and horizontal re-entrant corner steel reinforcement and proposed a new formula to determine the updated nominal shear strength. Application of Rational Second Kind Chebyshev Functions for System of Integrodifferential Equations on Semi-Infinite Intervals
Rational Chebyshev bases and Galerkin method are used to obtain the approximate solution of a system of high-order integro-differential equations on the interval [0,∞). This method is based on replacement of the unknown functions by their truncated series of rational Chebyshev expansion. Test examples are considered to show the high accuracy, simplicity, and efficiency of this method

In vitro evaluation of commercially available theophylline sustained release tablets in Pakistan
The dissolution behavior of five commercially available brands of sustained release theophylline
tablets was studied in phosphate buffer solutions of pH 1.2, 4.5, 5.5, 6.0 and 7.5 at 37 °C using the
USP dissolution apparatus II (paddle method). Drug concentration in the samples was determined spectrophotometrically
at 272 nm. For predicting the release characteristics of theophylline from selected commercially
available tablets the data obtained in the dissolution studies was fitted into various mathematic
models defining kinetic parameters of drug release like zero-order rate equation, first-order rate equation,
Hixen-crowell cube root law, Higuchi equation and Korsemeyer-Peppas model. Tablets were subjected to
weight variation test, hardness, drug content and in vitro release studies. The present study revealed that
drug release increases with the increase of pH of the dissolution medium and also varies from brand to
brand. Among the five selected brands, B1 and B4 showed better pH dependency and drug release behaviour.
It has been suggested that possible reasons for difference in dissolution or drug release behaviour
are the difference in the manufacturing techniques and the quantity of hydrophobic excepients used by
different manufacturers, which retard the penetration of dissolution medium and ultimately decreases
availability of drug in the solution.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

Improvement of Bioconversion of Vitamin D3 into Calcitriol by Actinomyces hyovaginalis through Protoplast Fusion and Enzyme Immobilization
Protoplast fusion and enzyme immobilization techniques were applied to increase calcitriol production from vitamin D3 using Actinomyces hyovaginalis, a local isolate recovered from Egyptian soil, that has a potential bioconversion activity of vitamin D3 into calcitriol. A total of sixteen protoplast hybrids, formed between Actinomyces hyovaginalis isolate and two Bacillus species (B. thuringiensis and B. weihenstephanensis) were screened for vitamin D3 bioconversion activity. Compared to wild type isolate, four hybrids (formed between Actinomyces hyovaginalis isolate and B. thuringiensis) were found to preserve the bioconversion activity; out of which, three hybrids coded V2B, V3B and V8A exhibited higher calcitriol production. The hybrids coded V2B and V8A produced, per 1 L culture medium, about 0.5 and 0.4 mg calcitriol corresponding to 350% and 280%, respectively, increase compared to the wild type isolate. Among different alginate concentrations applied, immobilization of cell lysate of Actinomyces hyovaginalis isolate using 2% alginate showed 140% increase in calcitriol production from vitamin D3 compared to the free cell lysate. Activity of the immobilized form was preserved for five repetitive uses over a period of 15 days but with a 50% decline in production occurring at the fifth use
Oil palm leaf fibre and its suitability for paper-based products
Due to the shortage of wood as origin materials for paper-based production, agro-residue materials have been explored in the quest of finding the best alternative fibre. Oil palm leaf (OPL) is one of agro-residue that has potential due to its comparable characteristics with wood fibre. Studies on chemical compositions, fibre morphology, and mechanical property of OPL have been carried out aiming to evaluate its potential as a substitute raw material for pulp and paper-based production. The chemical compositions were analysed according to the TAPPI standard, Kurscher-Hoffner and chlorite methods accordingly. The mechanical property (tensile, tearing and bursting strengths) were determined as described in TAPPI test methods. Fibre dimensions were determined using Franklin method and analysed under the optical microscope. The content of cellulose in the OPL is determined to be 43.8%. Although, this result is lower than wood fibre (53%), OPL has higher hemicellulose content (36.4%) than the wood fibre (27.5%). In addition, the lignin content (19.7%) of OPL is in the low range of those in wood resources (18 - 25%). These parameters are important components to produce good quality pulp and will provide high mechanical strength of the paper-based products. The measured fibre length of oil palm leaf (1.13 mm) is shorter than the wood fibre (1.90 mm). Meanwhile, the mechanical property of OPL showed lower indexes than wood resources, however, tear (1.80 mN.m2/g) and burst (0.95 kPa.m2/g) indexes of OPL are higher than other published and successful wood resources (Eucalyptus). Based on the analyses, the oil palm leaf is indeed a suitable alternative of raw material for pulp and paper-based industries
Structural Behavior of Prestressed RC Dapped Beam with Openings Strengthened Using CFRP Sheets
This research examines the strengthening efficiency of prestressed concrete dapped end beam with opening under monotonic point load. The study concerns with the position of the opening relative to the dapped end, the shape of opening, as circle or square, in addition, the effect of CFRP strengthening around the opening. The experimental program consisted of testing nine scaled down prestressed concrete dapped end beam specimens with single opening near the dapped end. Beam specimens consisted of one control beam and the remaining eight beams classified into two groups. The first group contained four unstrengthened specimens, whereas the second group included beams with opening strengthened using CFRP sheets. A full wrapping configuration for the opening region was adopted in this research. The results presented the detrimental influence of the openings on the shear strength of the dapped beam and the additional strength achieved from strengthening. This study concludes that the shear strength of the prestressed dapped beam decreased by the presence of openings in the web with maximum reduction about 20% when the opening was located close the dapped end. Based on the test results, the strengthened beams recovered significant part of their original load carrying capacity. Generally, prestressed dapped beams regain a maximum of 92% of their strength when openings with different configurations and locations were strengthened with full CFRP wrap
