    Group-work: does it have to be that bad?

    Many accreditation bodies and universities require the graduate attribute of "an ability to work in teams" or to "effectively collaborate". Students invariably dislike working in groups maintaining that "malingerers ride on the back" of those students who work hard and contribute effectively to the outcomes of the group or team. This is the context in which an ALTC/OLT project was established, the project is to consider ways of enhancing group-work in Architecture and design related disciplines. The project has identified the issues associated with group-work, from the perspective of student and lecturer, and has begun to develop strategies to overcome the issues. This paper reports on an assessment intervention made in a subject that involved significant levels of group-work, the initiative gained interesting responses from the students involved. Interestingly the class was multi-disciplinary and with a large percentage of international students. The students articulated during the focus group at the end of the experience were positive about the experience of having to collaborate. This paper reports on the assessment initiative as well as providing some insights into the students\u27 experiences of working in groups

    The Indirect Search for Dark Matter with IceCube

    We revisit the prospects for IceCube and similar kilometer-scale telescopes to detect neutrinos produced by the annihilation of weakly interacting massive dark matter particles (WIMPs) in the Sun. We emphasize that the astrophysics of the problem is understood; models can be observed or, alternatively, ruled out. In searching for a WIMP with spin-independent interactions with ordinary matter, IceCube is only competitive with direct detection experiments if the WIMP mass is sufficiently large. For spin-dependent interactions IceCube already has improved the best limits on spin-dependent WIMP cross sections by two orders of magnitude. This is largely due to the fact that models with significant spin-dependent couplings to protons are the least constrained and, at the same time, the most promising because of the efficient capture of WIMPs in the Sun. We identify models where dark matter particles are beyond the reach of any planned direct detection experiments while being within reach of neutrino telescopes.     Digitalization of Aeronautic Painting Shop Floors for Improved Commissioning Activities

    Industrial commissioning plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of facilities and minimizes downtime and maintenance costs over their lifetime. To extend and adjust commissioning capabilities, Virtual Commissioning uses digital models of devices and processes to verify, validate, and optimize code programming, and component selection. To perform the validation process, a simulation involving control devices and process digital twins is required, leading to inherent computational complexity. Distributed simulation approach allows for simulation of complex systems by breaking down a large simulation into smaller, manageable parts that can be run simultaneously on separate processors, while still preserving the overall behavior and interactions of the system being simulated. This paper presents a distributed Virtual Commissioning solution for a spray paint process presented in UAV painting shop floor. The methodology for developing the implementation is described in detail: greenfield scenario generation, automation process, software toolchain development, selection of communication protocols, re-use of digital twins for extended applications, and complexity analysis.     Kinetic Cell-Based Morphological Screening: Prediction of Mechanism of Compound Action and Off-Target Effects

    SummaryWe describe a cell-based kinetic profiling approach using impedance readout for monitoring the effect of small molecule compounds. This noninvasive readout allows continuous sampling of cellular responses to biologically active compounds and the ensuing kinetic profile provides information regarding the temporal interaction of compounds with cells. The utility of this approach was tested by screening a library containing FDA approved drugs, experimental compounds, and nature compounds. Compounds with similar activity produced similar impedance-based time-dependent cell response profiles (TCRPs). The compounds were clustered based on TCRP similarity. We identified novel mechanisms for existing drugs, confirmed previously reported calcium modulating activity for COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib, and identified an additional mechanism for the experimental compound monastrol. We also identified and characterized a new antimitotic agent. Our findings indicate that the TCRP approach provides predictive mechanistic information for small molecule compounds

    A unifying theme of this conference was the use of different approaches to understand astrophysical sources of energetic particles in the TeV range and above.     Retrospective survey for sialidase activity in Mycoplasma pneumoniae isolates from cases of community-acquired pneumonia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sialidase is a well-known virulence factor of other respiratory pathogens, but was only recently documented to occur in some species of <it>Mycoplasma</it>. The sialidase activity expressed can vary quantitatively among strains within a species of mycoplasma, from undetectable to amounts that correlate positively with strain virulence. Very few isolates of <it>Mycoplasma pneumoniae </it>had ever been examined for sialidase activity, so it was unknown whether sialidase may contribute to diseases involving this species.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>No sialidase activity was detected by spectrofluorometric assay of 15 laboratory strains and 91 clinical isolates of <it>M. pneumoniae </it>banked over many years from patients having radiologically-confirmed, uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The annotated genome of strain M129 (GenBank <ext-link ext-link-id="NC_000912" ext-link-type="gen">NC_000912</ext-link>, <ext-link ext-link-id="ATCC29342" ext-link-type="gen">ATCC 29342</ext-link>), also isolated from a patient with pneumonia, accurately represents the absence of sialidase genes from strains of <it>M. pneumoniae </it>typically associated with uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia. A possible involvement of sialidase in neurologic or other extra-respiratory manifestations of <it>M. pneumoniae </it>mycoplasmosis remains to be investigated.</p
