    Elliptic Solutions of ABS Lattice Equations

    Elliptic N-soliton-type solutions, i.e. solutions emerging from the application of N consecutive B\"acklund transformations to an elliptic seed solution, are constructed for all equations in the ABS list of quadrilateral lattice equations, except for the case of the Q4 equation which is treated elsewhere. The main construction, which is based on an elliptic Cauchy matrix, is performed for the equation Q3, and by coalescence on certain auxiliary parameters, the corresponding solutions of the remaining equations in the list are obtained. Furthermore, the underlying linear structure of the equations is exhibited, leading, in particular, to a novel Lax representation of the Q3 equation.Comment: 42 pages, 3 diagram

    Presbyterian Imitation Practices in Zachary Boyd’s Nebuchadnezzars Fierie Furnace

    The university administrator, preacher and poet Zachary Boyd (1585–1653) relied heavily on epithets and similes borrowed from Josuah Sylvester's poetry when composing his scriptural versifications Zion's Flowers(c. 1640?). The composition of Boyd's adaptation of Daniel 3, Nebuchadnezzars Fierie Furnace, provides an unusually lucid example of the reading and imitation practices of a mid-seventeenth-century Scottish Presbyterian in the years preceding civil war. This article begins by re-considering a manuscript transcription of Fierie Furnace held at the British Library previously described as an anonymous playtext from the early 1610s, then establishes the nature of Boyd's reliance on Sylvester by analyzing holograph manuscripts held at Glasgow University Library, a sermon Boyd wrote on the same theme, and the copy of Sylvester's Devine Weekes, and Workes that Boyd probably used.Arts and Humanities Research Counci

    Superfluid Suppression in d-Wave Superconductors due to Disordered Magnetism

    The influence of static magnetic correlations on the temperature-dependent superfluid density \rho_s(T) is calculated for d-wave superconductors. In self-consistent calculations, itinerant holes form incommensurate spin density waves (SDW) which coexist with superconductivity. In the clean limit, the density of states is gapped, and \rho_s(T << T_c) is exponentially activated. In inhomogeneously-doped cases, the SDW are disordered and both the density of states and \rho_s(T) obtain forms indistinguishable from those in dirty but pure d-wave superconductors, in accordance with experiments. We conclude that the observed collapse of \rho_s at x\approx 0.35 in underdoped YBCO may plausibly be attributed to the coexistence of SDW and superconductivity.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures.     Atmospheric chemistry of gas-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: formation of atmospheric mutagens.

    The atmospheric chemistry of the 2- to 4-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which exist mainly in the gas phase in the atmosphere, is discussed. The dominant loss process for the gas-phase PAH is by reaction with the hydroxyl radical, resulting in calculated lifetimes in the atmosphere of generally less than one day. The hydroxyl (OH) radical-initiated reactions and nitrate (NO3) radical-initiated reactions often lead to the formation of mutagenic nitro-PAH and other nitropolycyclic aromatic compounds, including nitrodibenzopyranones. These atmospheric reactions have a significant effect on ambient mutagenic activity, indicating that health risk assessments of combustion emissions should include atmospheric transformation products

    The Bogoliubov-deGennes equations are solved for a proximity model for YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} in a magnetic field. The model explicitly includes the effects of the one-dimensional CuO chains, whose influence on the vortex core structure is studied. The rapid vortex core contraction as a function of field which is seen experimentally at low magnetic fields is naturally explained by the presence of the chains.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
