    High performance single photon sources from photolithographically defined pillar microcavities

    We demonstrate that single photons can be generated from single InAs/GaAs quantum dots in photolithographically defined pillar microcavities. Pillars with a 1.9 ”m diameter cavity show a four fold enhancement in the radiative decay rate due to the Purcell effect and a photon collection efficiency into a lens of up to 10%. Measurements of the second order correlation function reveal a greater than fifty fold reduction in the multi-photon emission rate compared to a laser of the same intensity

    Top incomes and the gender divide

    In the recent research on top incomes, there has been little discussion of gender. How many of the top 1 and 10 per cent are women? A great deal is known about gender differentials in earnings, but how far does this carry over to the distribution of total incomes, bringing self-employment and capital income into the picture? We investigate the gender divide at the top of the income distribution using tax record data for a sample of eight countries with individual taxation. We show that women are under-represented at the top of the distribution. They account for between a fifth and a third of those in the top 10 per cent. Higher up the income distribution, the proportion is lower, with women constituting between 14 and 22 per cent of the top 1 per cent. The presence of women in the top income groups has generally increased over time, but the rise becomes smaller at the very top. As a result, the gradient with income has become more marked: the under-representation of women today increases more sharply. Examination of the shape of the income distribution by fitting a Pareto distribution shows that at the end of the period women disappear faster than men as one moves up the income scale in all countries. In this sense, there appears to be something of a “glass ceiling” for women. In the case of Canada, Denmark, Norway and New Zealand, there appears to have been a reversal over time, with the slope of the upper tail having been steeper for women in the past. In seeking to explain this, we highlight the role of income composition, where we show that there have been significant changes over time, underlining the fact that it is not sufficient to look only at earned income

    Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Quenched Massive Strong-Coupling QED4_4

    We present results from a study of subtractive renormalization of the fermion propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in massive strong-coupling quenched QED4_4. Results are compared for three different fermion-photon proper vertex {\it Ans\"{a}tze\/}: bare ÎłÎŒ\gamma^\mu, minimal Ball-Chiu, and Curtis-Pennington. The procedure is straightforward to implement and numerically stable. This is the first study in which this technique is used and it should prove useful in future DSE studies, whenever renormalization is required in numerical work.Comment: REVTEX 3.0, 15 pages plus 7 uuencoded PostScript figure

    Interpretation, translation and intercultural communication in refugee status determination procedures in the UK and France

    This article explores the interplay between language and intercultural communication within refugee status determination procedures in the UK and France, using material taken from ethnographic research that involved a combination of participant observation, semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis in both countries over a two-year period (2007–2009). It is concerned, in particular, to examine the role played by interpreters in facilitating intercultural communication between asylum applicants and the different administrative and legal actors responsible for assessing or defending their claims. The first section provides an overview of refugee status determination procedures in the UK and France, introducing the main administrative and legal contexts of the asylum process within which interpreters operate in the two countries. The second section compares the organisation of interpreting services, codes of conduct for interpreters and institutional expectations about the nature of interpreters’ activity on the part of the relevant UK and French authorities. The third section then explores some of the practical dilemmas for interpreters and barriers to communication that exist in refugee status determination procedures in the two countries. The article concludes by emphasising the complex and active nature of the interpreter's role in UK and French refugee status determination procedures

    Nonperturbative structure of the quark-gluon vertex

    The complete tensor structure of the quark--gluon vertex in Landau gauge is determined at two kinematical points (`asymmetric' and `symmetric') from lattice QCD in the quenched approximation. The simulations are carried out at beta=6.0, using a mean-field improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert fermion action, with two quark masses ~ 60 and 115 MeV. We find substantial deviations from the abelian form at the asymmetric point. The mass dependence is found to be negligible. At the symmetric point, the form factor related to the chromomagnetic moment is determined and found to contribute significantly to the infrared interaction strength.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, JHEP3.cl

    Asymptotic Scaling and Infrared Behavior of the Gluon Propagator

    The Landau gauge gluon propagator for the pure gauge theory is evaluated on a 32^3x64 lattice with a physical volume of (3.35^3x6.7)fm^4. Comparison with two smaller lattices at different lattice spacings allows an assessment of finite volume and finite lattice spacing errors. Cuts on the data are imposed to minimize these errors. Scaling of the gluon propagator is verified between beta=6.0 and beta=6.2. The tensor structure is evaluated and found to be in good agreement with the Landau gauge form, except at very small momentum values, where some small finite volume errors persist. A number of functional forms for the momentum dependence of the propagator are investigated. The form D(q^2)=D_ir+D_uv, where D_ir(q^2) ~ (q^2+M^2)^-\eta and D_uv is an infrared regulated one-loop asymptotic form, is found to provide an adequate description of the data over the entire momentum region studied - thereby bridging the gap between the infrared confinement region and the ultraviolet asymptotic region. The best estimate for the exponent \eta is 3.2(+0.1/-0.2)(+0.2/-0.3), where the first set of errors represents the uncertainty associated with varying the fitting range, while the second set of errors reflects the variation arising from different choices of infrared regulator in D_uv. Fixing the form of D_uv, we find that the mass parameter M is (1020+/-100)MeV.Comment: 37 pages, RevTeX, 16 postscript figures, 7 gif figures. Revised version accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.     Gluon Propagator in the Infrared Region

    The gluon propagator is calculated in quenched QCD for two different lattice sizes (16^3x48 and 32^3x64) at beta=6.0. The volume dependence of the propagator in Landau gauge is studied. The smaller lattice is instrumental in revealing finite volume and anisotropic lattice artefacts. Methods for minimising these artefacts are developed and applied to the larger lattice data. New structure seen in the infrared region survives these conservative cuts to the lattice data. This structure serves to rule out a number of models that have appeared in the literature. A fit to a simple analytical form capturing the momentum dependence of the nonperturbative gluon propagator is also reported.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, using RevTeX. Submitted to Phys. Rev. D.     Regularization-independent study of renormalized non-perturbative quenched QED

    A recently proposed regularization-independent method is used for the first time to solve the renormalized fermion Schwinger-Dyson equation numerically in quenched QED4_4. The Curtis-Pennington vertex is used to illustrate the technique and to facilitate comparison with previous calculations which used the alternative regularization schemes of modified ultraviolet cut-off and dimensional regularization. Our new results are in excellent numerical agreement with these, and so we can now conclude with confidence that there is no residual regularization dependence in these results. Moreover, from a computational point of view the regularization independent method has enormous advantages, since all integrals are absolutely convergent by construction, and so do not mix small and arbitrarily large momentum scales. We analytically predict power law behaviour in the asymptotic region, which is confirmed numerically with high precision. The successful demonstration of this efficient new technique opens the way for studies of unquenched QED to be undertaken in the near future.Comment: 20 pages,5 figure
