Groundwater is a major source of water for irrigation purposes and for sustainable growth of Agricultural development. In this paper we formulated a mathematical model to analyse the interaction between the Draw-down levels in an unconfined aquifer with maize yield, using the parameters; aquifer recharged rate α, rate of interaction between the draw down level of the aquifer and the maize yield β, draw down level of the aquifer h, and the maize yield y. The aim of this paper is to analyse the interaction between crop yield and water table and to determine the effect of draw down level on maize yield. It was observed that the maize yield depends on the recharge rate of the aquifer α and the water table level h and also as the drawdown level increases, the maize yield increases. Agriculture is of paramount importance to the development of any country, it was established in this paper that a relatively small increase of water table depth beyond the optimum increase the surface irrigation requirement for maximum crop production, water table depth shallower than optimum decreases yield.Key words: Drawdown, recharged rate, maize yield, interactio

The shoemaker's holiday : a study in technique and significance

Although Thomas Dekker is accused of being a "hack without ideas," a man whose talent was chiefly journalistic, his contributions to Elizabethan drama through The Shoemaker's Holiday (1599) cannot be ignored. This play is usually classified as a romantic comedy; but the Shoemaker's Holiday is not so lacking in serious thought as many critics propose. On the surface this play is simple in theme, purpose, and construction, but it is really a piece of subtly designed dramatic fiction. Dekker's method involves the principles of romantic comedy, but his play is set against a verifiable background. Characters come from chronicles, records, legends, and contemporary London; landmarks in the play were outstanding in Dekker's day; situations and events arose from customs and life in the early seventeenth century. Above all The Shoemaker's Holiday reveals particular strength in the authenticity of characterization. Dekker had special ability in portraying convincingly the many sides of man's nature and the various forms of his personality

A descriptive analysis of teacher augmented feedback given to university students in beginning golf classes

    Get PDF
Individualized teacher augmented feedback (TAF) given to students during the learning/performance of golf was described from three perspectives: (a) an expert observer/ (b) the teacher, and (c) the students. Whiting's information -processing model provided the theoretical framework for the development of the study's instruments, one, a low-inference measure, and the other, a high-inference measure. The Cole-DAS, a modification of Fishman's Augmented Feedback tool, consisted of five categories and a total of nineteen distinct TAF items. It was used for systematically observing TAF given by three teachers to 33 students in three different golf classes. The TAF Perceptual Questionnaires were designed to survey teacher and student responses to the feedback given or received. The first part of both the teacher and student forms complemented the Cole-DAS categories. The second part solicited responses about TAF preferences in the golf setting

The antecedents and correlates of the use of self-care for school-age children

    Get PDF
The objectives of this study were to: 1) Describe patterns of use of self-care among families participating in a longitudinal study of maternal-child interaction, 2) Propose a conceptual model to explain family choice of selfcare, and 3) Develop and test a set of mathematical models predicting use of self-care during the school-week, using logistic regression. The data on the independent variables used in this study were obtained from a longitudinal study directed by Dr. Earl Schaefer. Three hundred twenty-two women in the last trimester of pregnancy who were receiving prenatal care through the Guilford County Health Department agreed to participate in 1975 and 1976. Data for this study were gathered in two cohorts from 191 mothers (75% black and predominantly low-income) during home-based maternal interviews in 1980 and 1981 and again in 1984 and 1985. Data on use of self-care were gathered from their nine- or ten-year-old children during school-based interviews during the 1985-86 and 1986-87 school years

Identifying the role of student-athlete leadership development in Division II athletics

    Get PDF
This study investigated leadership development opportunities in one Division II conference (DIIConf). The primary purpose of this study was to determine the capacity of member institutions to offer leadership development programming. The secondary aim in this study was to investigate the congruence between mission statements of DIIConf athletic departments and deliberate strategies employed. I also explored the perceptions of student-athletes who participated in leadership development programming provided by their athletic department. Measures included a questionnaire to gather data from athletic administrators and head coaches (N=74) followed by a descriptive analysis of results. Data regarding student-athlete leadership development listed on each athletic department’s website were collected. A content analysis was performed to determine how athletic departments address leadership development. A questionnaire was also sent to student-athletes (n=158) at one of the DIIConf member institutions to determine perceptions of available leadership opportunities. This study revealed the importance of DIIConf athletic departments creating mission statements that reflect their goals and priorities. Findings suggest athletic departments in this study may benefit from mobilizing internal and external resources as a way to maximize capacity for student-athlete leadership development opportunities. More research is needed to determine other effective methods for Division II institutions to provide leadership development training as well as the impact of such methods

Effectiveness of microskills interview training in increasing the responsiveness of medical students to the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and their families

    Get PDF
This study examined the effectiveness of faculty-supervised and self-instructional listening microskills training in increasing the responsiveness of medical students to the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and their families during medical student-patient-family member interviews. Two multiple baseline across subjects designs of four baselines each were used for the study. Eight third-year medical students from clinical oncology were randomly assigned to conditions for training and to baselines within each condition. Training conditions were identical in informational content and time requirements. Self-instructional training incorporated two videotapes developed for the study. Through the use of graphs, Rn analyses, and t tests, data from the training conditions were analyzed separately, comparatively, and on the basis of overall training effectiveness across all eight subjects. Standard for significance was .05

Mathematical Model for Ebola Virus Infection in Human with Effectiveness of Drug Usage

    Get PDF
In this paper, we formulated a mathematical model of the dynamics of Ebola virus infection incorporating effectiveness of drug usage. The infection free and infection persistence equilibrium points were obtained. The control reproduction number was obtained which was used to analyse the local and global stability of the infectionfree equilibrium. Using the method of linearization, the infection-free equilibrium (IFE) state was found to be locally asymptotically stable if Rc < 1 and unstable if Rc > 1. By constructing lyapunov function, the infection-free equilibrium was found to be globally asymptotically unstable if Rc > 1. Numerical simulation of the model was done. It is observed that, as percentage of effectiveness of drug administration increases, the control reproduction number decreases. This suggests that with the help of drugs usage, the immunes system have the ability to suppress the increase of infected cells, as well as virus load which shown that the virus does not maintain an infection in the system. Keywords: Drug Usage; Ebola virus; Global stability; Immune response; Mathematical mode

An investigation of psychological type and career maturity

    Get PDF
The problem addressed by this research was to investigate Super's construct of career maturity, as defined by the Career Development Inventory, to determine if its development is limited to a certain psychological type, as defined by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The Hotelling-Lawley Trace was the statistic employed to analyze the potential relationships between the scales of the Career Development Inventory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It was determined that there were no statistically significant correlations between the scales of the two instruments. Results indicate that the concept of career maturity is more broadly defined than theory currently states. Career counselors should accept different psychological type preferences as effective processes for making credible career decisions. The results of this investigation suggest the need for a reconsideration of three basic tenets of Super's theoretical model of career development. The model should be reconsidered for the purpose of broadening the definition of acceptable processes of information gathering, decision making, and decision strategy in the course of career decision making

This study examined ATMs and keyboards in public cybercafés of Ilesa & Ijebu-jesa, Nigeria for the presence of bacteria of health importance.Ten ATMs in Ilesa and 10 cybercafés each in Ilesa & Ijebu-jesa were sampled at random and cultured by standard procedures. Total bacterial counts and coliform counts were recorded. The susceptibility of isolates to commercially available antibiotics was assayed by the disk diffusion method.Total bacterial counts from ATM surfaces in Ilesa ranged from 2.80 x 105 CFU/Ml to 1.90 x 105 CFU/Ml and the mean count was 2.08 x 105 CFU/Ml. The mean heterotrophic count of keyboards from Ilesa was 2.01 x 105 CFU/Ml while the mean coliform count was 1.50 x  103 CFU/Ml. In Ijebu-jesa, the maximum bacterial count was observed on the 4th keyboard sampled; also the only keyboard from which coliform bacteria was isolated (1.00 x 103 CFU/Ml). The mean heterotrophic count of keyboards in this area was 2.42 x 105 CFU/Ml. Staphylococcus aureus made up 50 % of isolates from ATMs in Ilesa, 90 % of those from cybercafés in Ilesa and 20 % of cybercafés in Ijebu-jesa. Pseudomonas sp. was 10 % of isolates from ATMs surfaces in Ilesa and keyboards in Ijebu-jesa cybercafés and 30 % of those from keyboards in Ilesa. Isolates were 53 % susceptible to common antibiotics. The study concluded there was high presence of bacteria on the surfaces of ATMs and keyboards in Ilesa and Ijebu-jesa, some of which were potentially pathogenic and drug resistant

    Get PDF
This edition project originated as a final assessment for the ENGL 618 – Research Methods course at Western Carolina University. For the project, we were assigned between four and ten individual manuscript pages of letters related to local literary figures. Using scanned images of the manuscripts along with access to physical copies through the special collections in Hunter Library, we were required to transcribe the content of the letters while creating annotations and making editing choices based on personal preference in presenting the text. This introduction will provide information regarding the context of the letter I was assigned including biographical material related to the literary figure involved, textual notes about the manuscript itself, and an explanation of the editorial practices that I used in preparing this document. The introduction will be followed by the transcription of the letter with annotations, and finally, this edition will be concluded with a works cited containing short annotations of each source used to prepare annotations
