Integrated life cycle assessment and thermodynamic simulation of a public building's envelope renovation : Conventional vs. Passivhaus proposal
Unidad de excelencia MarÃa de Maeztu MdM-2015-0552The need to improve the energy efficiency of buildings has introduced the concept of nearly zero-energy buildings into European energy policies. Moreover, a percentage of the building stock will have to be renovated annually to attain high energy performance. Conventional passive interventions in buildings are focused on increasing the insulation of the building envelope to increase its energy efficiency during the operating phase. Often, however, intervention practices imply the incorporation of embodied energy into the building materials and increase the associated environmental impacts.This paper presents and evaluates a comparison of two different proposals for a real-world building renovation. The first proposal was a conventional project for energy renovation, while the second was a low-energy building proposal (following the Passivhaus standard). This study analysed the proposals using an integrated life cycle and thermal dynamic simulation assessment to identify the adequacy of each renovation alternative regarding the post-renovation energy performance of the building, including an evaluation of the introduction of a renewable insulation material into the low-energy building proposal, specifically a specific cork solution. The most significant conclusion was the convenience of the renovation, achieving energy savings of 60% and 80% for the conventional and Passivhaus renovations (ENERPHIT), respectively. The former supposed less embodied energy and environmental impacts but also generated less energy savings. The latter increased the embodied impacts in the building, mainly for the large amount of insulation material. The environmental implications of both proposals can be compensated for within a reasonable period of time, over 2 years in the majority of alternatives and impact categories. However, the ENERPHIT project was 30% better than the conventional proposal when the total lifespan of the building was considered. The introduction of cork did not fit the requirements for competing with the common non-renewable insulation materials because it did not imply better environmental performance in buildings, but cork insulation solutions currently present ample room for improvement
Lifestyle Intervention Using an Internet-Based Curriculum with Cell Phone Reminders for Obese Chinese Teens: A Randomized Controlled Study
Objectives
Obesity is an increasing public health problem affecting young people. The causes of obesity are multi-factorial among Chinese youth including lack of physical activity and poor eating habits. The use of an internet curriculum and cell phone reminders and texting may be an innovative means of increasing follow up and compliance with obese teens. The objectives of this study were to determine the feasibility of using an adapted internet curriculum and existing nutritional program along with cell phone follow up for obese Chinese teens.
Design and Methods
This was a randomized controlled study involving obese teens receiving care at a paediatric obesity clinic of a tertiary care hospital in Hong Kong. Forty-eight subjects aged 12 to 18 years were randomized into three groups. The control group received usual care visits with a physician in the obesity clinic every three months. The first intervention (IT) group received usual care visits every three months plus a 12-week internet-based curriculum with cell phone calls/texts reminders. The second intervention group received usual care visits every three months plus four nutritional counselling sessions.
Results
The use of the internet-based curriculum was shown to be feasible as evidenced by the high recruitment rate, internet log-in rate, compliance with completing the curriculum and responses to phone reminders. No significant differences in weight were found between IT, sLMP and control groups.
Conclusion
An internet-based curriculum with cell phone reminders as a supplement to usual care of obesity is feasible. Further study is required to determine whether an internet plus text intervention can be both an effective and a cost-effective adjunct to changing weight in obese youth.

Using genetic algorithms to generate test sequences for complex timed systems
The generation of test data for state based specifications is a computationally expensive process. This problem is magnified if we consider that time con- straints have to be taken into account to govern the transitions of the studied system. The main goal of this paper is to introduce a complete methodology, sup- ported by tools, that addresses this issue by represent- ing the test data generation problem as an optimisa- tion problem. We use heuristics to generate test cases. In order to assess the suitability of our approach we consider two different case studies: a communication protocol and the scientific application BIPS3D. We give details concerning how the test case generation problem can be presented as a search problem and automated. Genetic algorithms (GAs) and random search are used to generate test data and evaluate the approach. GAs outperform random search and seem to scale well as the problem size increases. It is worth to mention that we use a very simple fitness function that can be eas- ily adapted to be used with other evolutionary search techniques
ECGI targeted ablation for persistent AF not responding to pulmonary vein isolation: Results of a two-staged strategy (TARGET AF2)
Background: Mechanisms sustaining persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) remain unclear. / Objectives: The study sought to evaluate both the clinical outcomes and response to ablation of potential drivers in patients with recurrent persistent AF recurrence following pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). / Methods: A total of 100 patients with persistent AF of 1.5 revolutions or focal activations. Cycle lengths were measured pre- and postablation. The primary outcome was freedom from atrial arrhythmia off antiarrhythmic drugs at 1 year as per guidelines. / Results: Of 37 patients recruited, 26 had recurrent AF and underwent ECGI-guided ablation of PDs. An average of 6.4 ± 2.7 PDs were targeted per patient. The mean ablation time targeting PDs was 15.5 ± 6.9 minutes. An ablation response occurred in 20 patients (AF termination in 6, cycle length prolongation ≥10% in 14). At 1 year, 14 (54%) of 26 patients were free from arrhythmia, and 12 (46%) of 26 were off antiarrhythmic drugs. Considering the 96 patients who completed follow-up out of the original cohort of 100 patients undergoing cryoablation in this staged strategy, freedom from arrhythmia at 1 year following the last procedure was 72 (75%) of 96, or 70 (73%) of 96 off antiarrhythmic drugs. / Conclusions: In patients with recurrent AF despite PVI, ECGI-guided ablation caused an acute response in a majority with reasonable long-term outcomes

A neurogenetic model for the study of schizophrenia spectrum disorders: The International 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome Brain Behavior Consortium
Rare copy number variants contribute significantly to the risk for schizophrenia, with the
22q11.2 locus consistently implicated. Individuals with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome
(22q11DS) have an estimated 25-fold increased risk for schizophrenia spectrum disorders,
compared to individuals in the general population. The International 22q11DS Brain Behavior
Consortium is examining this highly informative neurogenetic syndrome phenotypically and
genomically. Here we detail the procedures of the effort to characterize the neuropsychiatric and
neurobehavioral phenotypes associated with 22q11DS, focusing on schizophrenia and
subthreshold expression of psychosis. The genomic approach includes a combination of whole
genome sequencing and genome-wide microarray technologies, allowing the investigation of all
possible DNA variation and gene pathways influencing the schizophrenia-relevant phenotypic
expression. A phenotypically rich data set provides a psychiatrically well-characterized sample
of unprecedented size (n=1,616) that informs the neurobehavioral developmental course of
22q11DS. This combined set of phenotypic and genomic data will enable hypothesis testing to
elucidate the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of schizophrenia spectrum disorders
