Effect of physical exercise on lipid metabolism in the elderly
PURPOSE: To assess the effect of regular physical exercise on plasma lipids and apoproteins in an elderly group.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-three old people of both sexes, aged between 65 and 94, were randomly distributed between a test group (n = 31) and a control group (n = 32). The test group followed a program of physical exercise for eight months, with intensity of 60% to 80% of heart rate reserve, consisting of three weekly sessions, on alternate days, of 60 minutes each. Before the beginning of the program and eight months afterwards, blood samples were collected to assess total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, HDL2-C. HDL3-C, apo A1, apo B-100 and apo (a). The ratios total cholesterol/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, HDL2-C/HDL3-C and apo A1/apo B-100 were also calculated.
RESULTS: In the test group total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, apo B-100, total cholesterol/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C decreased significantly; HDL-C, HDL2-C, apo A1, HDL2-C/HDL3-C and apo A1/apo B-100 increased significantly; HDL3-C and apo (a) did not change. The control group did not present any significant alterations in any of the parameters assessed.
CONCLUSIONS: Regular physical exercise decreases vascular risk and may help to reduce cardiovascular events in the elderly
Real Time Analysis of Thermal Activation via Sphaleron Transitions
We study the process of thermal activation mediated by sphaleron transitions
by analyzing the real-time dynamics of the decay out of equilibrium in a
dimensional field theory with a metastable state. The situation considered is
that of a rapid supercooling in which the system is trapped in a metastable
state at a temperature larger than the mass of the quanta, but smaller than the
energy to create a critical droplet. The initial density matrix is evolved in
time and the nucleation rate (probability current at the saddle point) is
computed. The nucleation rate is {\it time dependent}, vanishing at early
times, reaching a maximum at a time with the mass of quanta
in the metastable state, and decreasing at long times as a consequence of
unitarity. An estimate for the average number of particles of ``true vacuum''

Observables in Topological Yang-Mills Theories
Using topological Yang-Mills theory as example, we discuss the definition and
determination of observables in topological field theories (of Witten-type)
within the superspace formulation proposed by Horne. This approach to the
equivariant cohomology leads to a set of bi-descent equations involving the
BRST and supersymmetry operators as well as the exterior derivative. This
allows us to determine superspace expressions for all observables, and thereby
to recover the Donaldson-Witten polynomials when choosing a Wess-Zumino-type

Alguns aspectos metodológicos da medida da excreção de matéria orgânica pelo fitoplâncton por espectrometria de cintilação líquida
Some aspects of the procedures to measure dissolved organic matter (DOM) released by phytoplankton account for important sources of errors. These aspects include: cell damage upon filtration of samples, residual inorganic 14C in the filtrates, NaH14CO3 ampoule contaminations and the low radiation activity proper to the released samples. Some experiments on these procedural problems were carried out and their effects on the released DOM were evaluated. A procedure to use control samples to avoid errors in the technique of DOM analysis by the liquid cintillation counter is described. Experiments on the validity of stocking preserved filtrates of natural plankton populations and algal cultures were also carried out for long periods prior to the radioactivity measurements
Multiflavor Correlation Functions in non-Abelian Gauge Theories at Finite Density in two dimensions
We compute vacuum expectation values of products of fermion bilinears for
two-dimensional Quantum Chromodynamics at finite flavored fermion densities. We
introduce the chemical potential as an external charge distribution within the
path-integral approach and carefully analyse the contribution of different
topological sectors to fermion correlators. We show the existence of chiral
condensates exhibiting an oscillatory inhomogeneous behavior as a function of a
chemical potential matrix. This result is exact and goes in the same direction
