Gravitational Waves from Wobbling Pulsars
The prospects for detection of gravitational waves from precessing pulsars
have been considered by constructing fully relativistic rotating neutron star
models and evaluating the expected wave amplitude from a galactic source.
For a "typical" neutron matter equation of state and observed rotation rates,
it is shown that moderate wobble angles may render an observable signal from a
nearby source once the present generation of interferometric antennas becomes

A matter of time: Implicit acquisition of recursive sequence structures
A dominant hypothesis in empirical research on the evolution of language is the following: the fundamental difference between animal and human communication systems is captured by the distinction between regular and more complex non-regular grammars. Studies reporting successful artificial grammar learning of nested recursive structures and imaging studies of the same have methodological shortcomings since they typically allow explicit problem solving strategies and this has been shown to account for the learning effect in subsequent behavioral studies. The present study overcomes these shortcomings by using subtle violations of agreement structure in a preference classification task. In contrast to the studies conducted so far, we use an implicit learning paradigm, allowing the time needed for both abstraction processes and consolidation to take place. Our results demonstrate robust implicit learning of recursively embedded structures (context-free grammar) and recursive structures with cross-dependencies (context-sensitive grammar) in an artificial grammar learning task spanning 9 days. Single Jejunum Metastasis from Breast Cancer Arising Twelve Years after the Initial Treatment
Metastatic involvement of gastrointestinal tract from breast cancer is a rare event. We report the case of a 61-year-old woman presenting with bowel obstruction, related to metastasis of a primary breast cancer she had 12 years earlier (a triple-negative invasive ductal carcinoma treated with surgery and chemotherapy). Bowel obstruction was caused by a 20-centimeter tumor in the jejunum, involving also the transverse colon. The patient underwent en bloc resection of tumor with jejunum and transverse bowel segment and received adjuvant chemotherapy with carboplatin and paclitaxel. Bleomycin-induced flagellate hyperpigmentation
Bleomycin is a chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of different tumours. It has several side effects, including flagellate hyperpigmentation, which is a unique and a well-documented side effect of bleomycin therapy. We report a case of a 23-year-old woman with a personal history of ovarian dysgerminoma, who developed flagellate hyperpigmentation on trunk after bleomycin therapy
Collaboration networks from a large CV database: dynamics, topology and bonus impact
Understanding the dynamics of research production and collaboration may
reveal better strategies for scientific careers, academic institutions and
funding agencies. Here we propose the use of a large and multidisciplinar
database of scientific curricula in Brazil, namely, the Lattes Platform, to
study patterns of scientific production and collaboration. In this database,
detailed information about publications and researchers are made available by
themselves so that coauthorship is unambiguous and individuals can be evaluated
by scientific productivity, geographical location and field of expertise. Our
results show that the collaboration network is growing exponentially for the
last three decades, with a distribution of number of collaborators per
researcher that approaches a power-law as the network gets older. Moreover,
both the distributions of number of collaborators and production per researcher
obey power-law behaviors, regardless of the geographical location or field,
suggesting that the same universal mechanism might be responsible for network
growth and productivity.We also show that the collaboration network under
investigation displays a typical assortative mixing behavior, where teeming
researchers (i.e., with high degree) tend to collaborate with others alike.
Finally, our analysis reveals that the distinctive collaboration profile of
researchers awarded with governmental scholarships suggests a strong bonus
