Conception and justification of a new test setup for assessment of the fatigue strength of connections between precast railway bridge girders
Important investments have been made worldwide in the modernization and construction of railway lines. Plans for new constructions, have also been laid out. Recently, precast concrete has been widely employed in the construction of railway bridges and viaducts. Several precast solutions have been applied, namely: I-shaped
or U-shaped precast girders and uni-cellular or bi-cellular precast box girders. Regarding the structural scheme in the longitudinal direction, either simple span or continuous decks have been used. In this context, this work aims to contribute to the knowledge about the real performance of these structures through the development
of a laboratory tests setup, for the study of this type of structure, focusing on the connection between the precast beams. The setup will be implemented at the Laboratory of Earthquake and Structural Engineering (LESE), several experimental campaigns on the cyclic behaviour of reinforced concrete elements have been
carried out.6612-034D-AE05 | PEDRO DA SILVA DELGADON/
Development of Generalized Correlation for Electrical Conductivity Prediction of Pure Ionic Liquid
Ionic liquids are salts in liquid form that are composed of short-lived ion pairs. They are the new trend of solvent because of their very low vapor pressure, good chemical and thermal stability, and melting temperatures lower than 100°C. Pure ionic liquids contain ions that can conduct electricity or serve as electrolytes. But experimentation using ionic liquids would be expensive. This study aims to develop a generalized correlation for the electrical conductivity prediction of pure ionic liquids. The researchers gathered data of pure ionic liquids that involved the electrical conductivity property from the ThermoIL Database. The collected data were then trimmed based on a developed scheme and classifications. After trimming the data, the researchers evaluated the data using MATLAB software. The residual value was calculated, and a parity plot was constructed to test the models’ accuracy. The researchers gathered 2,425 data points from 310 references and were trimmed to 220 data points from 21 references. The parity plot and graph of the residuals plotted against pressure showed that the experimental and calculated values were close. Results showed that the electrical conductivity of pure ionic liquids could be predicted using a model patterned to Pitzer correlation with reduced temperature and reduced pressure as variables. Data with two or more references and low uncertainty made a good result on the models to create a generalized correlation via curve fitting
Psychometric properties of the Child Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) applied to children and adolescents with cerebral palsy
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cerebral palsy (CP) patients have motor limitations that can affect functionality and abilities for activities of daily living (ADL). Health related quality of life and health status instruments validated to be applied to these patients do not directly approach the concepts of functionality or ADL. The Child Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) seems to be a good instrument to approach this dimension, but it was never used for CP patients. The purpose of the study was to verify the psychometric properties of CHAQ applied to children and adolescents with CP.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Parents or guardians of children and adolescents with CP, aged 5 to 18 years, answered the CHAQ. A healthy group of 314 children and adolescents was recruited during the validation of the CHAQ Brazilian-version. Data quality, reliability and validity were studied. The motor function was evaluated by the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Ninety-six parents/guardians answered the questionnaire. The age of the patients ranged from 5 to 17.9 years (average: 9.3). The rate of missing data was low (<9.3%). The floor effect was observed in two domains, being higher only in the visual analogue scales (≤ 35.5%). The ceiling effect was significant in all domains and particularly high in patients with quadriplegia (81.8 to 90.9%) and extrapyramidal (45.4 to 91.0%). The Cronbach alpha coefficient ranged from 0.85 to 0.95. The validity was appropriate: for the discriminant validity the correlation of the <it>disability index </it>with the visual analogue scales was not significant; for the convergent validity CHAQ <it>disability index </it>had a strong correlation with the GMFM (0.77); for the divergent validity there was no correlation between GMFM and the pain and overall evaluation scales; for the criterion validity GMFM as well as CHAQ detected differences in the scores among the clinical type of CP (p < 0.01); for the construct validity, the patients' <it>disability index </it>score (mean:2.16; SD:0.72) was higher than the healthy group (mean:0.12; SD:0.23)(p < 0.01).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>CHAQ reliability and validity were adequate to this population. However, further studies are necessary to verify the influence of the ceiling effect on the responsiveness of the instrument.</p
NO-Mediated [Ca2+]cyt Increases Depend on ADP-Ribosyl Cyclase Activity in Arabidopsis.
Cyclic ADP ribose (cADPR) is a Ca(2+)-mobilizing intracellular second messenger synthesized from NAD by ADP-ribosyl cyclases (ADPR cyclases). In animals, cADPR targets the ryanodine receptor present in the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum to promote Ca(2+) release from intracellular stores to increase the concentration of cytosolic free Ca(2+) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), and cADPR has been proposed to play a central role in signal transduction pathways evoked by the drought and stress hormone, abscisic acid, and the circadian clock. Despite evidence for the action of cADPR in Arabidopsis, no predicted proteins with significant similarity to the known ADPR cyclases have been reported in any plant genome database, suggesting either that there is a unique route for cADPR synthesis or that a homolog of ADPR cyclase with low similarity might exist in plants. We sought to determine whether the low levels of ADPR cyclase activity reported in Arabidopsis are indicative of a bona fide activity that can be associated with the regulation of Ca(2+) signaling. We adapted two different fluorescence-based assays to measure ADPR cyclase activity in Arabidopsis and found that this activity has the characteristics of a nucleotide cyclase that is activated by nitric oxide to increase cADPR and mobilize Ca(2.)This work was supported by the Islamic Development Bank and the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust (SMA-A), Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CTH) and BBSRC UK grant BB/D017904/1 (AND) awarded to AARW.This is the author accepted manuscript. Nearly K\"ahler heterotic compactifications with fermion condensates
We revisit AdS_4 heterotic compactifications on nearly K\"ahler manifolds in
the presence of H-flux and certain fermion condensates. Unlike previous
studies, we do not assume the vanishing of the supersymmetry variations.
Instead we determine the full equations of motion originating from the
ten-dimensional action, and subsequently we provide explicit solutions to them
on nearly K\"ahler manifolds at first order in alpha'. The Bianchi identity is
also taken into account in order to guarantee the absence of all anomalies. In
the presence of H-flux, which is identified with the torsion of the internal
space, as well as of fermion condensates in the gaugino and dilatino sectors,
new solutions are determined. These solutions provide a full classification of
consistent backgrounds of heterotic supergravity under our assumptions. All the
new solutions are non-supersymmetric, while previously known supersymmetric
ones are recovered too. Our results indicate that fully consistent
(supersymmetric or not) heterotic vacua on nearly K\"ahler manifolds are
scarce, even on AdS_4, and they can be completely classified.Comment: 1+17 pages, 1 figure; v2: remark and two references added, published

Stability Constraints on Classical de Sitter Vacua
We present further no-go theorems for classical de Sitter vacua in Type II
string theory, i.e., de Sitter constructions that do not invoke
non-perturbative effects or explicit supersymmetry breaking localized sources.
By analyzing the stability of the 4D potential arising from compactification on
manfiolds with curvature, fluxes, and orientifold planes, we found that
additional ingredients, beyond the minimal ones presented so far, are necessary
to avoid the presence of unstable modes. We enumerate the minimal setups for
(meta)stable de Sitter vacua to arise in this context.Comment: 18 pages; v2: argument improved, references adde
Thyroid hormone receptor binding to DNA and T(3)-dependent transcriptional activation are inhibited by uremic toxins
BACKGROUND: There is a substantial clinical overlap between chronic renal failure (CRF) and hypothyroidism, suggesting the presence of hypothyroidism in uremic patients. Although CRF patients have low T(3 )and T(4 )levels with normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), they show a higher prevalence of goiter and evidence for blunted tissue responsiveness to T(3 )action. However, there are no studies examining whether thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) play a role in thyroid hormone dysfunction in CRF patients. To evaluate the effects of an uremic environment on TR function, we investigated the effect of uremic plasma on TRβ1 binding to DNA as heterodimers with the retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRα) and on T(3)-dependent transcriptional activity. RESULTS: We demonstrated that uremic plasma collected prior to hemodialysis (Pre-HD) significantly reduced TRβ1-RXRα binding to DNA. Such inhibition was also observed with a vitamin D receptor (VDR) but not with a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ). A cell-based assay confirmed this effect where uremic pre-HD ultrafiltrate inhibited the transcriptional activation induced by T(3 )in U937 cells. In both cases, the inhibitory effects were reversed when the uremic plasma and the uremic ultrafiltrate were collected and used after hemodialysis (Post-HD). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that dialyzable toxins in uremic plasma selectively block the binding of TRβ1-RXRα to DNA and impair T(3 )transcriptional activity. These findings may explain some features of hypothyroidism and thyroid hormone resistance observed in CRF patients
A fabric-based soft hand exoskeleton for assistance: the ExHand Exoskeleton
INTRODUCTION: The rise of soft robotics has driven the development of devices for assistance in activities of daily living (ADL). Likewise, different types of actuation have been developed for safer human interaction. Recently, textile-based pneumatic actuation has been introduced in hand exoskeletons for features such as biocompatibility, flexibility, and durability. These devices have demonstrated their potential use in assisting ADLs, such as the degrees of freedom assisted, the force exerted, or the inclusion of sensors. However, performing ADLs requires the use of different objects, so exoskeletons must provide the ability to grasp and maintain stable contact with a variety of objects to lead to the successful development of ADLs. Although textile-based exoskeletons have demonstrated significant advancements, the ability of these devices to maintain stable contact with a variety of objects commonly used in ADLs has yet to be fully evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This paper presents the development and experimental validation in healthy users of a fabric-based soft hand exoskeleton through a grasping performance test using The Anthropomorphic Hand Assessment Protocol (AHAP), which assesses eight types of grasping with 24 objects of different shapes, sizes, textures, weights, and rigidities, and two standardized tests used in the rehabilitation processes of post- stroke patients. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: A total of 10 healthy users (45.50 ± 14.93 years old) participated in this study. The results indicate that the device can assist in developing ADLs by evaluating the eight types of grasps of the AHAP. A score of 95.76 ± 2.90% out of 100% was obtained for the Maintaining Score, indicating that the ExHand Exoskeleton can maintain stable contact with various daily living objects. In addition, the results of the user satisfaction questionnaire indicated a positive mean score of 4.27 ± 0.34 on a Likert scale ranging from 1 to 5
Improving the delivery and efficiency of fungus-impregnated cloths for control of adult Aedes aegypti using a synthetic attractive lure
Abstract Background Entomopathogenic fungi are highly promising agents for controlling Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Deploying fungus-impregnated black cloths in PET traps efficiently reduced Ae. aegypti female survival rates under intra-domicile conditions. With the aim of further increasing the effectiveness of the traps, the addition of attractive lures to fungus-impregnated traps was evaluated. Methods Black cloths were suspended inside 2 l plastic bottles called “PET traps”. These traps were placed in rooms simulating human residences. The first experiments evaluated the attraction of mosquitoes to PET traps with black cloths covered in adhesive film with and without synthetic lures (AtrAedes™). Traps were left in the test rooms for either 24 or 48 h. The attractiveness of the lures over time was also evaluated. The efficiency of PET traps with fungus-impregnated black cloths associated with lures was compared to that of traps without lures. Results The highest percentage of captured mosquitoes (31 and 66%) were observed in PET traps with black cloths covered in adhesive film + attractive lure maintained in test rooms for 24 h and 48 h, respectively. Black cloths covered in adhesive film captured 17 or 36% of the mosquitoes at 24 h and 48 h, respectively. The attractiveness of the lures fell gradually over time, capturing 37% after 5 days on the bench and 22% of the mosquitoes after 30 days exposure to ambient conditions. Associating attractive synthetic lures with black cloths impregnated with M. anisopliae placed in test rooms for 120 h reduced mean survival to 32%, whilst black cloths impregnated with M. anisopliae without lures resulted in a 48% survival rate. Using Beauveria bassiana in the traps resulted in a 52% reduction in mosquito survival, whilst combining Beauveria and AtrAedes resulted in a 36% survival rate. PET traps impregnated with fungus + AtrAedes resulted in similar reductions in survival when left in the rooms for 24, 48, 72 or 120 h. Conclusions AtrAedes increased attractiveness of PET traps with black cloths under intra-domicile conditions and when associated with M. anisopliae or B. bassiana, significantly reduced Aedes survival. This strategy will reduce the number of PET traps necessary per household
Depth-Sensing Indentation on REBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) Single Crystals obtained from Xenotime Mineral
A natural mixture of heavy rare earths oxides extracted from xenotime mineral
have been used to prepare large single crystals of high-temperature
REBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) superconductor grown using the CuO-BaO self-flux method.
Its mechanical properties along the ab-plane were characterized using
instrumented indentation. Hardness and elastic modulus were obtained by the
Oliver and Pharr method and corresponds to 7.4 \pm 0.2 GPa and in range 135-175
GPa at small depths, respectively. Increasing the load promotes the nucleation
of lateral cracks that causes a decrease in hardness and the measured elastic
modulus by instrumented indentation at higher loads. The indentation fracture
toughness was estimated by measuring the radial crack length from cube-corner
indentations at various loads and was 0.8 \pm 0.2 MPa.m1/2. The observed slip
systems of REBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) single crystals were [100](001) and [010](001),
the same as for YBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) single crystals. The initial stages of
deformation and fracture in the indentation process were investigated. The
hardness and elastic modulus were not strongly modified by the crystallographic
orientation in the ab-plane. This was interpreted in terms of the resolved
shear stresses in the active slip systems. Evidence of cracking along the {100}
and {110} planes on the ab-plane was observed. As a conclusion, the mechanical
properties of REBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) single crystals prepared from xenotime are
equivalent to those of YBa2Cu3O(7-\delta) single crystals produced by
conventional rare earths oxides.Comment: The paper will appear in Volume 42 (2012) of the Brazilian Journal of
