Diagnostic criteria for bipolarity based on an international sample of 5,635 patients with DSM-IV major depressive episodes
To assess the clinical validity of individual DSM-IV criteria for hypomania. In an international sample of 5,635 patients with major depressive episodes (Bridge Study), DSM-IV criteria for hypomania (stem questions, number and quality of symptoms, duration and exclusion criteria) were systematically assessed and their validity analysed on the basis of clinical data including family history, course, and other clinical characteristics. Three stem questions for hypomania, irritability, elevated mood and the added question of increased activity, showed comparable validity. The results support the current DSM-IV requirement for a higher symptom threshold (4 of 7 hypomanic symptoms) in cases of irritable mood. Longer durations of hypomanic episodes were associated with higher scores on all validators. The results did not support the DSM-IV durational requirements for hypomanic episodes (4days) and manic episodes (7days). Brief hypomanic episodes of 1, 2 or 3days were valid and would meet validity criteria for inclusion. The three exclusion criteria in DSM-IV (hypomania due to the use of antidepressants or of other substances, or to other medical conditions) were found to exclude patients with bipolar depression and should therefore not be retained. These results support several revisions of the DSM-IV concept of hypomanic episodes: specifically, the inclusion of increased activity as a gate question, the inclusion of 1 or 2 to 3-day episodes and the elimination of all exclusion criteri
Two-gap superconductivity in Ba_1-xK_xFe_2As_2: A complementary study of the magnetic penetration depth by \muSR and ARPES
We investigate the magnetic penetration depth \lambda in superconducting
Ba_1-xK_xFe_2As_2 (T_c\simeq32K) with muon-spin rotation (\muSR) and
angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). Using \muSR, we find the
penetration-depth anisotropy \gamma_\lambda=\lambda_c/\lambda_{ab} and the
second-critical-field anisotropy \gamma_{H_c2} to show an opposite T-evolution
below T_c. This dichotomy resembles the situation in the two-gap superconductor
MgB_2. A two-gap scenario is also suggested by an inflection point in the
in-plane penetration depth \lambda_ab around 7K. The complementarity of \muSR
and ARPES allows us to pinpoint the values of the two gaps and to arrive to a
remarkable agreement between the two techniques concerning the full T-evolution
of \lambda_ab. This provides further support for the described scenario and
establishes ARPES as a tool to assess macroscopic properties of the

Incommensurate Charge Order Phase in Fe2OBO3 due to Geometrical Frustration
The temperature dependence of charge order in Fe2OBO3 was investigated by
resistivity and differential scanning calorimetry measurements, Mossbauer
spectroscopy, and synchrotron x-ray scattering, revealing an intermediate phase
between room temperature and 340 K, characterized by coexisting mobile and
immobile carriers, and by incommensurate superstructure modulations with
temperature-dependent propagation vector (1/2,0,tau). The incommensurate
modulations arise from specific anti-phase boundaries with low energy cost due

Epidemiology of gastrointestinal symptoms in young and middle-aged Swiss adults: prevalences and comorbidities in a longitudinal population cohort over 28Â years
Anisotropy and internal field distribution of MgB2 in the mixed state at low temperatures
Magnetization and muon spin relaxation on MgB2 were measured as a function of
field at 2 K. Both indicate an inverse-squared penetration depth strongly
decreasing with increasing field H below about 1 T. Magnetization also suggests
the anisotropy of the penetration depth to increase with increasing H,
interpolating between a low Hc1 and a high Hc2 anisotropy. Torque vs angle
measurements are in agreement with this finding, while also ruling out drastic
differences between the mixed state anisotropies of the two basic length scales
penetration depth and coherence length.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Anisotropy of the upper critical field in superconductors with anisotropic gaps. Anisotropy parameters of MgB2
The upper critical field Hc2 is evaluated for weakly-coupled two-band
superconductors. By modeling the actual bands and the gap distribution of MgB2
by two Fermi surface spheroids with average parameters of the real material, we
show that H_{c2,ab}/H_{c2,c} increases with decreasing temperature in agreement

Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy on Single Crystal MgB2
We report on the results of scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on
single crystals of Mg2. Tunneling was performed both parallel and perpendicular
to the crystalline c-axis. In the first case, a single superconducting gap
(Delta_pi = 2.2 meV) associated with the pi-band is observed. Tunneling
parallel to the ab-plane reveals an additional, larger gap (Delta_sigma ~ 7
meV) originating in the highly two-dimensional sigma-band. Vortex imaging in
the pi-band was performed with the field and tunnel current parallel to the
c-axis. The vortices have a large core size compared to estimates based on Hc2,
and show an absence of localized states in the core. Furthermore,
superconductivity between the vortices is rapidly suppressed by an applied

Growth methods of c-axis oriented MgB2 thin films by pulsed laser deposition
High quality MgB2 thin films have been obtained by pulsed laser deposition
both on MgO and on Al2O3 substrates using different methods. In the standard
two-step procedure, an amorphous precursor layer is deposited at room
temperature starting both from stoichiometric target and from boron target:
after this first step, it is annealed in magnesium atmosphere in order to
crystallize the superconducting phase. The so obtained films show a strong
c-axis orientation, evidenced by XRD analysis, a critical temperature up to 38
K and very high critical fields along the basal planes, up to 22T at 15K. Also
an in situ one step technique for the realization of superconducting MgB2 thin
films has been developed. In this case, the presence of an argon buffer gas
during deposition is crucial and we observe a strong dependence of the quality
of the deposited film on the background gas pressure. The influence of the Ar
atmosphere has been confirmed by time and space-resolved spectroscopy
measurements on the emission spectrum of the plume. The Ar pressure modifies
strongly the plasma kinetics by promoting excitation and ionization of the
plume species, especially of the most volatile Mg atoms, increasing their
