    The frozen nucleon approximation in two-particle two-hole response functions

    We present a fast and efficient method to compute the inclusive two-particle two-hole (2p-2h) electroweak responses in the neutrino and electron quasielastic inclusive cross sections. The method is based on two approximations. The first neglects the motion of the two initial nucleons below the Fermi momentum, which are considered to be at rest. This approximation, which is reasonable for high values of the momentum transfer, turns out also to be quite good for moderate values of the momentum transfer qkFq\gtrsim k_F. The second approximation involves using in the "frozen" meson-exchange currents (MEC) an effective Δ\Delta-propagator averaged over the Fermi sea. Within the resulting "frozen nucleon approximation", the inclusive 2p-2h responses are accurately calculated with only a one-dimensional integral over the emission angle of one of the final nucleons, thus drastically simplifying the calculation and reducing the computational time.     Resource-aware whole-cell model of division of labour in a two-strain consortium for complex substrate degradation

    Background Low-cost sustainable feedstocks are essential for commercially viable biotechnologies. These feedstocks, often derived from plant or food waste, contain a multitude of different complex biomolecules which require multiple enzymes to hydrolyse and metabolise. Current standard biotechnology uses monocultures in which a single host expresses all the proteins required for the consolidated bioprocess. However, these hosts have limited capacity for expressing proteins before growth is impacted. This limitation may be overcome by utilising division of labour (DOL) in a consortium, where each member expresses a single protein of a longer degradation pathway. Results Here, we model a two-strain consortium, with one strain expressing an endohydrolase and a second strain expressing an exohydrolase, for cooperative degradation of a complex substrate. Our results suggest that there is a balance between increasing expression to enhance degradation versus the burden that higher expression causes. Once a threshold of burden is reached, the consortium will consistently perform better than an equivalent single-cell monoculture. Conclusions We demonstrate that resource-aware whole-cell models can be used to predict the benefits and limitations of using consortia systems to overcome burden. Our model predicts the region of expression where DOL would be beneficial for growth on starch, which will assist in making informed design choices for this, and other, complex-substrate degradation pathways

    Parametrization of the angular correlation and degree of linear polarization in two-photon decays of hydrogen-like ions

    The two-photon decay in hydrogen-like ions is investigated within the framework of second order perturbation theory and Dirac's relativistic equation. Special attention is paid to the angular correlation of the emitted photons as well as to the degree of linear polarization of one of the two photons, if the second is just observed under given angles. Expressions for the angular correlation and the degree of linear polarization are expanded in terms of cosθ\cos\theta-polynomials, whose coefficients depend on the atomic number and the energy sharing of the emitted photons. The effects of including higher (electric and magnetic) multipoles upon the emitted photon pairs beyond the electric-dipole approximation are also discussed. Calculations of the coefficients are performed for the transitions 2s1/21s1/22s_{1/2}\rightarrow1s_{1/2}, 3d3/21s1/23d_{3/2}\rightarrow1s_{1/2} and 3d5/21s1/23d_{5/2}\rightarrow1s_{1/2}, along the entire hydrogen isoelectronic sequence (1Z1001\le Z \le 100)

    Emission of neutron-proton and proton-proton pairs in electron scattering induced by meson-exchange currents

    We use a relativistic model of meson-exchange currents to compute the proton-neutron and proton-proton yields in (e,e)(e,e') scattering from 12^{12}C in the 2p-2h channel. We compute the response functions and cross section with the relativistic Fermi gas model for a range of kinematics from intermediate to high momentum transfers. We find a large contribution of neutron-proton configurations in the initial state, as compared to proton-proton pairs. The different emission probabilities of distinct species of nucleon pairs are produced in our model only by meson-exchange currents, mainly by the Δ\Delta isobar current. We also analyze the effect of the exchange contribution and show that the direct/exchange interference strongly affects the determination of the np/pp ratio.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
